Strategic leadership comprises styles and abilities to yield employee performance producing the desired outcome. Leadership styles consist of various components, dependent on situations, and produce one of three responses- commitment, compliance, and/or resistance (Trident 2016). As leadership engages the use of power to influence employee outcomes, leaders develop personal leadership styles in order to empower the workforce. Efficient directors possess influential powers such as legitimate, expert, reward, coercive, and referent, allowing managers to obtain desired employee performance while empowering the workforce (Eveland n.d.). Various models of leadership styles have evolved, evident in innumerable situations, yet not limited to …show more content…
Throughout the movie, both of these men were leaders in their own right, however, as visualized in this scene Vizzini fails due to his overconfidence. Trait models of leadership specifically consider particular traits of a person (s), promotes specific behaviors or leadership styles in order to obtain the desired end result (Cherry 2016). For example, Westley displayed leadership excellence in evaluating the situation, determining the goal, rescuing the princess, deliberately planning to become immune to a poison, taking a risk, and ultimately achieving success. The traits of confidence, determination, motivation, and the ability to think outside the box allowed success for Westley to rescue the princess. The leadership style in this movie clip excelled as an impeccable choice to overcome the competition in an ingenious …show more content…
As evident in the scene, Miranda experts authority over all who work for her, expecting each employee to perform based on her commands. Specifically, this leadership style does not employ group ideas yet, it is based solely on the leader’s concepts, effective in an emergent type situation. Another type of leadership style such as transformational, would allow Miranda to be respected instead of feared in the role of the company
In The Once and Future King T.H. White conveys his personal thoughts on leadership through the help of Merlin, and Wart's transformations. Through each transformation Wart experiences different forms of power, each being a part of a whole idea on how a leader should act. He must piece together these ideas for the definitive way he should rule as king. In order to teach Wart, Merlin transforms him into several different forms, a fish, hawk, ant, goose and a badger.
“As you wish,” said by the Farm boy, westley, a main character who ties the story of love, romance, and action together. The book The Princess Bride by William Goldman is a story of two lovers, Buttercup and Westley. After Westley dies on a boat by The Dread Pirate Roberts, the King of Florin, Prince Humperdinck, started searching for love. After a visit from the count and countess they decide that Buttercup is worthy of being the queen. Even though Buttercup says she will never love The Prince, she still agrees to the marriage. Soon after Buttercup is introduced to Florin she gets kidnapped by the Turk, the Sicilian, and the Spaniard. They all figure out that they are being followed by the man in black, which leads to the adventure part of the story. In The Princess Bride, William Goldman uses many different archetypes like the damsel in distress, the task, and the magic weapon which are archetypes that have been used for centuries and renders them new to make the story flow together and more interesting.
Without consulting Harvey, David defined Paula’s responsibilities and provided her direction. David had an autocratic leadership style, which is defined as a leader that makes decisions without consulting their team members (Mind Tools, 2016). By taking this type of approach, it caused friction between Paula and Harvey. David would have created better results, and fostered collaboration between Harvey and Paula if he would have consulted Harvey to help define the objectives for the plant. Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which a leader encourages a team to pursue objectives. The leader sets the tone and leads the group or teams to success (CSU Global,
Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
The theme of leadership in the ward does not mirror the outside world very accurately, as in contemporary society a leader of a society or an organisation is almost always accountable to a person senior to him. This is not seen in the novel, as Big Nurse seems to be answerable to no one, in fact, it is arguable that everyone answers to her. A hierarchy or class system operates inside the ward which can be clearly seen throughout the course of the novel. Patients living within the ward are ‘classed’ according to the state of their mental health or to the condition of which they suffer from. Chief describes the method of discriminating patients from one another:
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The leadership clinical preceptor that I have had the opportunity to work with throughout the semester considers herself to be a transformational leader (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). The preceptor displays transformational leadership behavior characteristics such as showing charisma, inspiring and motivating the unit, viewing each employee as an individual (Yoder-Wise, 2011). For example, she makes an effort to get to know each employee individually by gaining knowledge about their personal lives such as likes, dislikes, hobbies, and family life front the point of hiring the employee (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014). She also promotes and encourages her unit employees to function as a team not as individuals (J. P., personal communication, March 23, 2014).
In today's rapidly changing world, leadership is necessary to keep up with the competition. In the extract from the film “Braveheart”, William Wallace demonstrated many leadership techniques that helped his army prevail as an underdog. Many of the techniques Wallace used are prevalent in modern day business leaders as well. By stepping up in a leadership role, Wallace gained the respect of the entire army even though he was not the man that was put in charge. One of the main things that Wallace did was lead through his actions. By stepping up to the front line, it showed his troops that he was not scared and this attitude was imitated by the rest of the troops. In the present day business world, an effective leader hears what others have to say and helps them with their issues. This is just what Wallace did.
Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. Identifying these conclusions is extremely important in crafting company culture.
Fiedler’s model views a person’s leadership style as part of their personality and is hard to change. This was present in Miranda as it was apparent that at work she was as strict as they come. She says what she wants and expects you to know what, when and how. She did not appreciate her time being wasted unnecessarily. For example, on Andy’s first day she was given a list of tasks and when asking a question Miranda stated to “bore someone else with your questions”. Her methods were very task-oriented that focused on “getting it done” even if the delivery may not have been in the best fashion. The Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Model would suggest Miranda more frequently was “telling” Andy and Emily what to do. This method is quite low when measuring the relationship between leader and others. More often than not, Andy felt insecure with what she was doing and not confident that even if she did it correct that Miranda would still be unsatisfied. Miranda possessed such an elaborate and extensive knowledge that if she would have changed her delivery the results would have been so much better and the relationships she had would not have been so distant. The Leader-Member Exchange theory stated that there are in and out groups who are treated differently. Once someone is defined as part of the in-group, there is a special relationship formed and the attitudes within are more favorable. For instance, when Andy began to become a better fit for Miranda than Emily, you seen a shift from Andy in and Emily out. Miranda began to give Emily the tedious tasks of fetching coffee and throwing her purse and coat on her desk every day. It is important to see how all of these attributes combined to help Miranda become the icon she is, but also hurt her personal life. The way her leadership was embedded in her personality pushed her away from her husband leading to a
The movie, “Gladiator” is based on the life of a war hero in the Roman era. Maximus was the main character in the movie who led the northern army against the Germanic tribes near Vindobona. Maximus had to make major decisions throughout the storyline to survive and become as great as he was. He went from a war hero, to an enslaved gladiator who had to constantly fight for freedom to regain his respect. He wanted to become free again, so he put his heart into his actions. These concepts that we have learned through our organizational behavior course has shown throughout the characters. The main concepts of leadership styles, expectancy theory, team dynamics, and communication are prevalent in the movie.
Additionally, each leader will usually have a distinctive With this particular style, leaders are known to have a hands off approach when guiding others, and usually they do not provide the support that may be needed. Furthermore, Laissez-fair leaders allow individuals to make their own decisions without much interference or feedback. In addition to a Laissez-fair leader, there is also the transformational method of leadership. A Transformational leader can be described as a person who “persuades their subordinates to take on the organizational revolution as their own” (Rana, Malik, & Hussain, 2007, p. 163). In addition, transformational leaders also formulate challenging purposes in order to pave the way for others.
I like the fact that the teacher pointed out that leadership can be found everywhere. Leaders don't necessarily exist only in a company where there are a lot of people following you. “Everyone has the potential and possibility to be a leader”. They could be the best at inspiring others, or best at solving problems or dealing with criticism. By and large we all have the necessities to lead and I find, during the group discussions, that the difference and uniqueness of us that give us our own perspective to view and do things. Leadership is also about understanding and combining many different talents and to make them work together to create the best result. There are many kinds of leaders out there, and so many leadership styles. Yet I think we shouldn’t categorised ourselves into one or identify our superiors into one. Why? Because I think it is crucial to be flexible and adapt to which way to lead according to the situations For example, the Democratic style maybe the most popular and most effective, yet it is proved to be counter-productive in urgent occasions requiring instant and firm decisions from one person only, and that is the
Effective leaders are usually exceptional motivators and great coaches as well. This will help employees to get involved in their work and excited about working for their particular organization. Miranda however, was very contrary in her style when it comes to coaching. She was absolutely not interested in coaching or even assisting her employees with doing their job. She required them to anticipate her needs instead. While she herself was not motivational, she did possess the power to enable Andrea and others to attend the aforementioned fashion week in Paris which was motivation enough itself
Because of this fact most organizations and entrepreneurs are paying close attention the the leaders they put in place to lead their company and its people into victory, which is the ultimate goal of their organizations. It is a well known fact that leadership is an important factor in an organization’s success, but the type of leadership style and as well as the leader 's personality is what really determines that level of success. In my research I have concluded that the most important leadership styles are transformational and transactional leadership. Transformational leadership has the potential to resurrect, transform and keep companies evolving with time. Transactional leadership although can have some negative effects on some, but if used properly, can promote compliance almost a stagnant team through both rewards and punishments. When companies are pursuing leaders, they not only look at their candidates experiences knowledge of a particular sector of that business, but they pay close attention to the personalities of these individual. They do so because they know that one’s leadership style and abilities is heavily affected by the candidates own personality and views. As a result of this thinking, it has lead all authors involved in both research paper and article “Relationship Between Leaders Personality Types and Source of Power and leadership Styles Among Managers” and “
