“Traditional methods and styles of leadership must change to meet the changing environment “(Sims, 2002, p.242). Sims (2002) argues that organizations can ensure success by developing individuals in leadership positions as leaders and managers. There is a perception that leadership is a level above management. McConnell (2006) states that there are differences between leading and managing. In short, “people obey managers because they must or they expect to; people follow leaders because they want to” (McConnell, 2006, p.147).Therefore, leadership can be defined as “the act of influencing others to work toward a goal” (Bauer & Erdogen, 2009, p.285) and can be considered “more art than science” (McConnell, 2006, p.147). In health organizations, leaders exist at all levels. In the imaging department, leaders are directors, supervisors, and team leaders.
There are various theories on leadership styles, McConnell (2006) states that the three basic leadership styles are laissez-faire, participative (democratic), and authoritarian (autocratic). He argues that few leaders have only one leadership style. Sims (2002) states that factors such as experience, training, professional competence, technical competence and the leader’s philosophy regarding human nature would affect his or her leadership style. However, he thinks that leadership styles should be flexible and adaptable to various situations. Imaging departments exist in dynamic market environments, and many factors influence the leadership styles that imaging department leaders use .Ismail, Zainuddin, and Ibrahim (2010) argue that participative leadership (democratic) and consultative leadership are the leadership styles that seems to be implemented in such departments ,and ment...

Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
Leadership is a communication process of a leader and individuals in which the leaders behavior or attitude directs individuals towards any goal effectively. It is widely believed that leadership creates the vital link between organizational effectiveness and people’s performance at an organizational level (Avolio, 1999; McGrath and MacMillan, 2000). The effectiveness of an organization depends upon the leader having an effective leadership style in order to effectively reach the goal of the organization; with it being one of the key driving forces for improving a firm’s performance. Scholars suggest that effective leadership behaviors can facilitate the improvement of performance when organizations face problems (McGrath and MacMillan, 2000). To effectively achieve leadership of individuals and organizational outcomes, four theories can be used; Fiedler’s Contingency Model, Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model, Vroom & Yetton Participative Leadership Model, and House & Dessler Path-Goal Theory.

My leadership style is primarily participative. Consultation contributes to more effective decisions leveraging the collective wisdom of the group, and, by soliciting their input, a greater degree of personal interest and satisfaction from participants (Yukl, 2013, p. 107). No one has all the answers, but together, in an open and trusting environment, all of us can collaborate toward a solution (Bennis, 2009, p. 133). Consultation and delegation within a shared philosophical framework serves to build support, personal investment, and leadership capacity amongst participants (Yukl, 2013, p. 384).
Leadership is an important aspect of all businesses, especially the health care industry, and without good leadership, patient care and outcomes may be affected. Effective leaders and managers use various styles and theories and adapt these with consideration to the characteristics of their workers and of the environment. A self-assessment was done that asked a series of questions that generated a picture of the quality and what style of leader that I am. This picture will be compared to existing leadership and management theories along with a few examples. Leadership is a quality many of us strive to achieve. To be an excellent leader has been an elusive quest. However, the pursuit of excellent leadership is movement in the right direction. In this paper we will examine the major types of leadership styles. The three types are, Participative or Democratic, Laissez-Faire, and Authoritative.
After completing the “Leadership Style Questionnaire” and analyzing my results, I have learned what my preferred leadership style is and how that influences how I lead and may be perceived from members of the group. From the results attained from the questionnaire, my preferred style of leadership is directing. This type of leadership style is best for individuals who have a low competency and high commitment level. These types of leaders are highly focused on tasks and less focused on relationships. They make decisions without consulting with the group and communicate without regarding the group’s concerns or suggestions. This type of leader also supervises the followers intently. They are very successful in creating objectives for each follower and the group as a whole to guide the group in reaching a certain goal.
Coming into this major I had no idea what to expect and the same went for this course, but I did know that it dealt with leadership, something that I have been steeped in for a good part of my life. So with that, it was hard to really set any goals as to what I would want to improve in with my leadership style but I was able to pin point a few aspects that could use some work through learning about different leadership techniques and methods. By learning about how leaders are formed, different approaches to leading groups and various aspects effecting group dynamics, I could determine an individuals or my own strengths in leadership and the methods necessary to effectively lead various types of groups. Also by observing many others in facilitating the after school program it gave me much more of an opportunity to see what works and what does not, this is an opportunity very few leaders get without being thrust into a role that they are ill prepared for.
Leadership is necessary for a group to accomplish goals. Leadership according to Lamberton and Minor (2014), is the ability to impact people to attain a goal. A leader according to Gaiter (2013), sets direction and influences others to accomplish goals and directs cohesiveness. A leaders’ goal is not just the success of the team but, also the success of individuals on the team, a leader must motivate, inspire and empower others for success (Gaiter, 2013). To accomplish these goals a leader will utilize a leadership style.
Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. A successful business cannot function without leadership therefore this is a crucial aspect of internal employee development for businesses striving to stay relevant in a crowded marketplace. In addition to recognizing your leadership style every leader needs to look to them and identify what type of personality they have. By becoming an informed business leader you will gain trust and respect of your team to guide them into the future and maximizing potential growth. Throughout this paper I will identify my leadership style and also personality type and how it has affected my personal career growth. Identifying these conclusions is extremely important in crafting company culture.
Choosing the right leadership style of the situation or employee is very important, but just as important is choosing the right leadership style for the organization. Every organization has their own culture and that culture often lends itself to a particular leadership style or styles. If the leadership style your manager uses is in contrast with the culture of the organization there can be difficulties. Not only could this lead to a butting heads between the leadership of the organization, but also the employees are often left confused and bewildered by the conflicting information of what they know of the organization and the instructions they are receiving from their manager. Hiring leaders and management for your organization whose leadership styles fit within the style and culture of the company can prevent many roadblocks in accomplishing goals and following the vision of the organization.
