I need to stop doing projects which are not necessary and concerning myself with things I cannot control. The Seek First to Understand category asked questions about areas of my life and leadership which make me very proud. I pride myself on being sensitive to the feelings of others and trying to see things from their point of view. I believe everyone has a right to their opinions and I do not have the right to make them feel bad about their thoughts. If I feel they are thinking incorrectly, then I take the time to work with them to understand how their thought is incorrect and help them to understand. “Transformational leadership refers to a leadership style in which the leader encourages his or her subordinates to achieve higher and higher levels of performance for the sake of the organization.” (Flynn, 2015) After years of research Transformational Leadership has been broken into four categories, Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration.

“The pitfalls included overanalysis, failure to execute decisions, blaming employees for negative outcomes, perpetuating past mistakes, being overcautious and risk averse, giving disproportionate weight to the first information received, givng undue weight to a recent event, seeking information to support an existing decision and overestimateing the accuracy of forecasts.” (Van Loveren, 2007) I do my best to find solutions which will benefit everyone involved. I do know, as a leader, sometimes decisions must be made which will not benefit everyone and I have trouble making those decisions. Transformational leadership can be applied in one-on-one or group situations. Using this approach, the manager (leader) and the associates (followers) are “transformed” to enhance job performance and help the organization be more productive and successful. All of these leaders have the attributes mentioned here. History will decide the greater impact they had on society as it is being written every day. Therefore, the qualities of transformational leadership make the essence of transformational management and the key to successful management of transformational organizational changes.
Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
Dictionary.com defines moral as “Founded on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom: moral obligations.” Different theories have surfaced throughout the years to attempt to answer questions like, what are morals, what make some people have more conscious thought than others, and how do we acquire them. According to Estep & Kim (2010), the moral values have been separated into four moral definitions, “Psychoanalytical, Conditioning, Moral Potential, and Cognitive/Moral Reasoning.” These different types of moral reasoning helped Billy Graham to achieve, project and maintain the excellent Christian Leadership skills he exhibited throughout his life. Billy Graham saw leadership as a privilege, and became more conscious of his role as a Christian leader to avoid even the appearance of evil. This mindset helped Billy Graham to avoid situations where he could be tempted to engage in activities against his moral standards, and helped him to grow into a leadership role ordained by God.
According to the book, understanding personality is essential for effective leadership. Without an understanding of self, there cannot be a clear understanding of how others perceive you as a leader. (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014) In order to figure out your leadership style you have to have an understanding of who you are. This can be done by taking a series of personality assessments to see what you best fit into.
For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Trustworthiness in a leader will instill confidence in students, patients and other coworkers (Northouse, 2016, p. 38). Also, having a sense of empathy will show people that you understand and can relate to their problems (Northhouse, 2016, p. 38). The weakest traits were self-confidence, self-assured, and determined (Northhouse, 2016, p.38). Self-confidence has always been a weakness and something I continue to work on daily. In organizations aspiring for growth and continual improvement, relationships are more intricate and alternatives more numerous than the either/or imposition implied by the notion of leaders and followers. Practically no one leads all of the time. Leaders also work as followers; all in all, “everyone uses a portion of their day following and another portion leading” (Galie and Bopst, 2006, p. 11).
The exercise of evaluating my leadership skills by using the Seven Habits Profile tool, I have been able to understand the areas that form my strength as well as weaknesses. This exercise stood important for me as the self-developed recommendations would help me shape my actions for the rest of my life, in personal as well as professional sphere. Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers. The goal of transformational leadership is to cause a positive change in individuals, help motivate them, and develop a leader within each individual.
At my previous organization, I maintained a close and trustful relationship with my manager, and I was able to communicate more frequently with her. Sometimes, I was able to discuss with my manager about subjects that had no relationship to the work. My manager provided me with resources in order to grow on the job, and she motivated me with her past experiences. This implies that, I have in-group dyadic relationship with my manager.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
