People, regardless of their race, cultural background, gender, or sexuality tend to make career choices based on environments they deem will be comfortable for them and support their lifestyle. In order to avoid hostility or the unfamiliar, people will choose career development paths that support their advancement and comfort ability rather than raise barriers that would limit their success. More specifically in the Latino/a community, specific factors that contribute to their career choices. In the near future, I would like to be in medical school. In order for me to be able to achieve that professional goal, I will have to have the available financial resources. Unfortunately this is a necessity to education in the society we live in. More importantly I would need the encouragement of my parents to push me to continue on the very rigorous journey that is postgrad. Without support it is very hard for me to carry myself especially in times of extreme stress. Just does in explain to be found in Latino culture, it is important to me that the people I am surrounded by have a liberal attitude towards women rolls as well as diversity and culture. Being that I am a black woman with Caribbean roots, I think it is imperative to note that representation matters. Being able to see role models of the same culture background and race as me gives me the encouragement to know that if they could do it I can as well. Especially in the field of medicine, there aren't very many people that look like me. It is doable but not as comfortable to try to endure something that you do not feel like you fit into. What will ultimately hinder me from achieving my goals believes that I can't do something because of any circumstance.
Tara Yosso’s is a motivational, informational book that gives us an insight and awareness of how the Chicana/o students struggles throughout their education in the American society. Critical Race Counterstories Along the Chicana/Chicano Educational Pipeline, portrays how Latino students have been marginalized in the educational system. Yosso addresses the problems that might be hindering students of color to drop out of school to continue to higher education. She does this research by analyzing various situations that still happen in the K-12 educational system, as in high school, and higher education. Yosso also addresses counterstories to better understand the experiences and struggles Chicanas/os go through in their schooling. Counterstories are important to be able to know what Chicanas/os struggles go through. Also tells about the outcomes that Chicanas/os have overcome when they are in a situation were they ate being underrepresented and how they have been dealing with these unequal educational opportunities. Her book addresses, awareness of how the Chicana/o culture is being underrepresented in the American educational system. It gives an understanding of why the Chicana/o students are leaking out of the educational pipeline. It also shows the obstacles this Latino students have to face to be able to make it through the educational pipeline. Growing up as a Latina in a small conservative town was not always an easy thing. I often faced presumptions that I would not graduate high school or amount to much in life because of my background. I knew that I would have to work twice as hard to accomplish my goals and prove to myself and my peers that the stereotypes made of Latinos and our success were nothing more than thoughts by people ignorant to our abilities and strengths. I was always determined to achieve my goals, even when others doubted or implied that I couldn’t.
As a freshman at Cal-State Fullerton I began to ask my self where inequalities come from and what causes them, why does society use the term minorities and why minorities are oppress. While working at the Volunteer & Service Center I was invited to join a group that plan an event called the Social Justice Summit. This event was a grassroots event that helped raise awareness about different inequalities and oppressions in the community to over 500 community members. With this event, I understood that there isn’t one solid answer that exists about what causes inequalities and oppressions. And even now, the only thing that is clear is that people need to know what is happening in the world. This is why I want to continue my education in the field of Ethnic Studies. Specifically I want to find out the struggles of the Chicano/a population. Find out about pass movements and what we can learn about those movements, what we can improve about those movements, to help the Chicano population today.

Educators, parents, policy makers, and institutional leaders all play a vital role in the advocacy of Latino/a students on their journey towards higher education. Access to information on how to attain higher education and practices needed to plan for the next steps, are necessary in preparing for the future. As the Latina/o population continues to grow in the United States, it is important to understand what their educational outlook is in regards to higher learning. This literature review will examine the roadblocks facing Latina/o students, including, parent involvement and understanding, family influence, preparation programs, and school support, and explore ways in which educators can work towards making college access a more frequent reality for Latina/o students. Parent Involvement and Understanding To begin to understand why Latina/o students find themselves significantly behind their Caucasian peers in college access, we must first look to the home and examine the relationship the parents of this population of students have with higher education.

Latinos have struggled to discover their place inside of a white America for too many years. Past stereotypes and across racism they have fought to belong. Still America is unwilling to open her arms to them. Instead she demands assimilation. With her pot full of stew she asks, "What flavor will you add to this brew?" Some question, some rebel, and others climb in. I argue that it is not the Latino who willingly agreed to partake in this stew. It is America who forced her ideals upon them through mass media and stale history. However her effort has failed, for they have refused to melt.
Just like every individual in the U.S., the desire to provide a better life for their families is a driving force for the Latino population. The Latino immigrants not only face discrimination upon their arrival, but also deal with the emotions of being away from their home country, the security of their families, friends, culture, and traditions. The reception that they experience on arrival is far from welcoming. “The negativity towards immigration, be it warranted or not, is not good for our country. It fuels segregation, racism, prejudice, and discrimination” (Lopez, 2010). Illegal immigration has become such a hot topic for many that even when immigrants arrive legally they are still met with suspicion. I think one of the most offensive titles given to a group of people is illegal “aliens”. These individuals are not aliens; they are human beings with dreams of a better life just like everyone else. Today, Latinos are proud of their culture and heritage and even though they attempt to assimilate into the American culture, through pluralism they are retaining their own, as well. They continue to converse in their native languages within their families, listen to music and watch Spanish television programs. Where in the past the melting pot theory led many to discard their native language and culture in order to fit in, today many are embracing these ideals, which may be a contributing factor in the continued discrimination (Lopez, 2010).
Growing up in a Mexican household where education isn’t a priority or important has been one of my major obstacles that I’ve had to overcome. Although my family’s culture believes that education isn’t necessary their experiences and lifestyles have influence and motivate my choices for my future. I come from a home where I have no role model or someone influential. I have no one to ask for advice for college or anything involve in school. In most homes, older siblings help their younger siblings with their homework or projects but in my house no one was able to provide me with any help. According to Andrews and Boyle (2016), having a diverse workforce provides a greater satisfaction among employees, which will result in higher retention of employees as well. By hiring a diverse culture within an organization this increases a workplaces economy and becomes a culturally competent organization. Otherwise, a high turnover can be very costly to an organization and the functionality can decrease. Many organizations have developed policies to help recruit and retain people from different backgrounds. When employees feel that they are valued because of their diversity, the employees will feel protected from discrimination, feel that there is room for advancement within the company, and increase employment retention (Kaplan, Wiley, & Maertz, 2011). With the increase of minorities across the nation, having diversity in nurses and healthcare workers to accommodate this diversity also improves the quality of care to the patients while also increasing their health outcomes and satisfaction (Ayoola, 2013). We have learned in the previous weeks that being able to communicate with our patient’s and understanding their culture can positively increase the outcome of the health. Researchers have found that 63% of employees that have a Hispanic origin have “altering appearance, limiting conversation topics, or changing your behavior.” (Lewis) While companies shadow this behavior it’s became one of the largest debates whether to try refraining from the behavior or to allow the companies to have a say as to what type of work place it should provide. Living within my black heritage I have grown to understand more about myself and values. My heritage has continued to demand that an education is a major priority. Due to many of my ancestors not being able to receive enough education and from what was told to me they were belittled and mistreated. In my family, an education is valued deeply. On the other hand, my heritage on my dad’s side of the family being a hard worker and being able to provide a great meal was valued as most important. Education was not a major concern within father’s family heritage. Through analyzing myself and values as a person. I realize that I valued both expectations of my heritage from both sides of my family. I can see that my heritage has continued through me due to my drive to receive the best education while working hard to provide for my family.
