The hat that I created is a bird flying out of a cage with the words free underneath the bird cage to symbolize that the bird is finally free. My inspiration for this hat came from two unrelated pieces of art in the Artforms book. One of my inspirations was an art sculpture called Grim Boy by Lara Schnitger. When I first saw her sculpture in the book, I thought it was a bird because of its beak-like head and fur but after reading about the sculpture I learned that she actually used mixed media including various dark colored fabrics, beads, and fur to represent an unhappy teenage boy. There are a few concrete objects that have a similar general idea that represent some type of development. In the novel, photos are shown of John Lewis preaching amongst the chickens he was taught to raise. The symbol chicken gives off an expression of people to uplift amongst a specific religion, also a feeling of skill developing. Lewis chose to simply treat the chicken like humans, not only that but he preached to them as if they would acknowledge what he uplifted
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is shown as intelligent, determined, and competitive. Rainsford is shown to be intelligent in the story when he beats General Zaroff back to his house with only two options for beating him to his house. Nevertheless, he thought of a faster route to General Zaroff’s house so he could surprise him and catch him off guard, which is alarmingly smart. “ ‘Rainsford!’ screamed the general. ‘How in God’s name did you get here?’ ‘Swam,’ said Rainsford. ‘I found it quicker than walking through the jungle’ (Connell). Did you know that about 2.2 million black men are in prison. Daniel Beaty is an african-american poet who was born December 28, 1975 and is 42 years old. In the poem “knock,knock” Beaty uses similes, hyperboles, extended metaphors and more to help develop the meaning. Daniel Beaty uses similes in this poem. “Walk like a god and your goddess will come to you.”
The birds are the major symbolic images from the very beginning of the novel: "A green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over: `Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! That's all right!'" (Chopin pp3) In The Awakening, caged birds represent Edna's entrapment. She is caged as a wife and mother; she is never expected to actually be able to think and make decisions for herself. The caged birds also symbolize the entrapment of Victorian women in general since their movements are limited by the rules of the society that they live in. Just like Edna the parrot cannot communicate its feelings because the parrot speaks in "a language which nobody [understands]" (Chopin pp3). Edna’s feelings are incomprehensible to the members of Creole society. Chopin uses wild birds and the idea of flight to symbolize freedom. Edna experiences a vision while Mademoiselle Reisz is playing piano and this vision includes the wild birds and flight. "When she heard it there came before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He was naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging its flight away from him." (Chopin pp26-27) Here Edna is showing her intense desire for freedom, a desire to escape from her roles as a wife and mother, and also from her husband Léonce. Léonce oppresses Edna by restricting her to a social cage. Throughout the novel Bless the Beasts and Children, by Glendon Swarthout, symbolism is used frequently to show a weakness in a character or to fulfill a purpose in the novel. The most apparent weaknesses in the bedwetters was their need for radios to help them sleep. The hats portrayed each characters personality and background in some cases. Also, The Box Canyon Boys Camp is in itself a symbol representing American society in general.

The original design was done by Barbara on a piece of cardboard and later ones were hand painted on pieces of stiff canvas. The design is representative of several aspects of the Quapaw culture. Including; the four eagle feathers that represent the cardinal points of the land and the eagle is very sacred to the Quapaw people as it flies highest in the sky and closest to the creator. The “Little Bird” by Imogen Heap, represents the human effort to hide ugliness. Humans are attracted to beautiful things, yet they themselves are not. Humans are naturally bitter and are without morals; it is society that puts us into place. So human effort is focused on fixing themselves and their surroundings. Richard Rodriguez’s The Achievement of Desire puts a very unusual point of view on how to look at the education system and how it affects the everyday person. Rodriguez talks immensely about the term he uses called “The Scholarship Boy.” He claims that the scholarship boy is technically defined as a student who is extremely talented but is changed by the school environment. Borderline Personality was displayed in the movie and Alex had almost every symptom of this disorder. The nonfiction book I read was titled Beautiful Child and was written by Torey Hayden. Beautiful Child follows the life of a special education teacher who is new to a school is met with a challenging class consisting of five children, all with very different needs. The class consists of a child who has tourette’s syndrome (Jesse), a child who we later find out has dyslexia (Billy), two twins who have fetal alcohol syndrome (Shane and Zane), and a young girl who is selectively mute (Venus.) Although through the story we see each child grow and progress, Venus is the main character and we see her open up to Torey through books and most important She-Ra comics.
