Eating Kosher is a practice that is associated with the religion of Judaism. Kosher in Hebrew means “fit or “proper”, in terms of food it means that the item meets the dietary requirements of Jewish Law. (KOF-K.org). The main pillars of which are no eating pork, no eating shellfish, and no mixing meat and dairy together. The animals are also slaughtered in a more humane way, and the food is prepared specially. (Shapiro) My informant, Rachel, is a conservative Jew who adheres to the principles of being Kosher. While it adds restrictions to her diet, Rachel does it for religious and family reasons. Rachel has kept Kosher, even throughout her college years. This has definitely caused her diet to be more restricted than the average college student.
It consists of foods that are very similar to what your average college student consumes. Rachel’s meal on a daily basis can be Kosher chicken, steak, hamburger, hotdogs, spaghetti, salmon, and/or vegetables (which generally tastes the same as non-Kosher food.) Now-a-days many grocery stores carry a wide variety of Kosher options so Kosher people still get to enjoy a variety of delicious foods. When Rachel goes out to restaurants it is much harder for her to find something to eat off the menu because not all restaurants prepare their meat the Kosher way. She usually will end up eating something vegetarian, or get fish so long as it is not a shellfish. Restaurants also do not have separate silverware and dishware for meat and dairy. However many times Rachel will still just eat the food. Though it breaks some of the restrictions that come with being Kosher, she does not expect every restaurant to follow the guidelines. This too is true with her college experience. Unless you go to the Kosher section of the Franklin dining commons, the dishes, the silverware, and the meat from the dining commons most likely do not follow Kosher guidelines. Rachel is still proud though that she has done her best to maintain her values throughout the college

It depends on what specific situation the student is stuck in to determine which foods they 're living off. My assumption of their daily meals is first, breakfast is one piece of fruit and a breakfast sandwich from a fast-food joint. Then, lunch or dinner is one entree of pizza, fried chicken, or a burger. Occasionally the student may snack off a bag of chips or a candy bar, but other than that, I can’t say that most students are eating healthy; I’ve seen at my college snacking mostly on chips while taking a break from class. Luckily, there some solutions to help to change the eating habits of the students. I discovered in Victoria Li’s article “Easy Diets for College Students” some helpful tips for the struggling students. She suggests “While opting for burgers fresh off the grill seems tempting, adhere to the habit of filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables, then filling the remainder with whole grains and lean protein” (2). In other words, it’s okay to have a greasy burger, but just as long you have something healthy to go with it, leading to a good balance of protein and energy Li says. As for the students going hungry because of their tight budget, some colleges or nearby locations may have meal donors. Some complain about having too much food and others complain about not having enough food. Since most of us, depend on the dining halls for food, we don’t necessarily think about what we eat; we just eat what’s available (Mei). Some students on campus, however, actually don’t get the luxury of often going to the dining halls, usually because of the type of meal plan they chose. Even without having an accessible dining hall, college students could still make their own meals without the use of processed foods. For example, instead of eating ramen, we could actually utilize our small kitchen that is provided for us in all of the dorms. However, the ones that have a dietary restriction are the ones that are affected the most. First-year students that have a dietary restriction are being highly affected when it comes to cost and health. Since they have a lot of food restrictions, they are not able to eat many types of food offered on the meal plan. Therefore, besides paying for the meal plan, they must also buy groceries to prepare their own food. As a result, they are spending double the amount they should need to spend. Also, their health is being affected, because sometimes they eat something they are not supposed to eat and they get sick. This kind of situation normally occurs because there is not complete labeling of the ingredients that the food is prepared with. Kristen Holman, a first-year student that has dietary restrictions says, "Well a lot of the time the buffet will have food out, and they have signs telling what kind of allergens are in the food, but either the signs do not match the food, or they won 't have a sign, or they add stuff to the food and do not put it on the sign. So sometimes I’ll get a food I think I can eat but it 'll have something in it and will hurt my stomach." When one goes away to college, their life changes dramatically. They are forced to make changes in their own lives in order to adapt to college life. When one is in high school and living at home, their eating habits and personal hygiene practices are for the most part controlled by their parents. They are told what to eat and when to eat it. They are told to keep their room clean and to take their vitamins, etc. When one moves away to college, they are on their own. There is no one telling them to clean their room, or to do laundry or what they have to eat. In some colleges and universities, it is required that freshmen live on campus and eat at least two meals a day in the dining hall. This isn't necessarily for the university to monitor a student's eating habits but rather to get the student acquainted with the campus and other people living there. Food served in college dining halls has not been known for it's nutritional value. However, over the past couple of years college chefs have been working to change that. While a lot of students have committed to eating the healthier foods and trying to stay healthy, the vast majority lives on pizza and taco bell or any other cheap fast food chain that is open until the late hours of the night. College is a fast paced environment and fast food caters to college students. In this fast paced environment, students more often than not neglect their health and personal hygiene and the consequences range from obesity to deadly eating disorders.
