I am an American whose heritage is both Cajun French Catholic and Irish Catholic. American food is just that American, a melting pot of all foods. As far as I can tell, I grew up eating the same or similar foods as most other American families. Except during the time of the Catholic season of prayer and fasting, Lent and while growing up in South Louisiana. During Lent, Catholics deny themselves meat on Fridays, so there is a lot of fish eaten. Lent can be explained in more depth, but no meat of Friday’s is the elementary description concerning food. After my parents got divorced, my dad returned to his home state, Louisiana. I spent most of my life between both parents; One in West Florida and the other in South Louisiana. My mom loved to try new foods, and she always taught me to take an unbiased bite. We would eat everything from Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Bar-B-Q, Southern, Spanish, Seafood, hamburger helper, etc. We ate a plethora of many cultural foods and were not confined to one type of cuisine. When I was with my dad, we ate my favorite food-Cajun. The more I was with my Louisiana Family, the more I thrived and fell in love with all things Cajun from Louisiana. The richness of the food was just the beginning. I love the fact that Louisiana is the only state which bolsters Cajun cooking. Every other state has its spaghetti, or bar-b-q or the American melting
In the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser talks about the working conditions of fast food meat slaughterhouses. In the chapter “The Most Dangerous Job,” one of the workers, who despised his job, gave Schlosser an opportunity to walk through a slaughterhouse. As the author was progressed backwards through the slaughterhouse, he noticed how all the workers were sitting very close to each other with steel protective vests and knives. The workers were mainly young Latina women, who worked swiftly, accurately, while trying not to fall behind. Eric Schlosser explains how working in the slaughterhouses is the most dangerous profession – these poor working conditions and horrible treatment of employees in the plants are beyond comprehension to what we see in modern everyday jobs, a lifestyle most of us take for granted.
Our families eat in different places. “My parents served all five of us children off of a single platter.” (Ahmedi, 9) In Afghani culture, the people and families are all rather poor so they can not afford furniture so they all eat on the floor. Pollan claims that we Americans refer to the French eating habits as the “French Paradox” (Our National Eating Disorder) but, we are the only ones that use this claim, if anything, we should be labeled as the American Paradox. The French eat in smaller portions, choose what they want to eat, and also make eating a gathering and an enjoyable event. Growing up in a Polish-American family, the food is an acquired taste. A taste that I never did acquire. While my mother generally cooks typical American dishes (or American spins on other cultural dishes), family gatherings at my grandmother's house are a culinary nightmare.

I was born in one of the countries in Asia, and our staple food is rice. Rice is always at the center of the table, and the rest of the viand surrounds it. Here in the United States, my household still eat rice every day, accompanied by cooked vegetables and meat. My food choices are influenced by culture and family. Vegetables and fruits of my choice are abundant at the International Market and other Asian grocery stores. Vegetables are also available for a cheaper price at the farmers market. The way in which we choose our foods can stem from events that occur during early childhood. When I lived in Jamaica as a child, I was only fed 'Jamaican style' cuisine. This involved lots of rice with peas, chicken, jerked pork, etc. However, I remember that my parents would take my brothers and I out to restaurants a few times a year as a treat.
