In the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser talks about the working conditions of fast food meat slaughterhouses. In the chapter “The Most Dangerous Job,” one of the workers, who despised his job, gave Schlosser an opportunity to walk through a slaughterhouse. As the author was progressed backwards through the slaughterhouse, he noticed how all the workers were sitting very close to each other with steel protective vests and knives. The workers were mainly young Latina women, who worked swiftly, accurately, while trying not to fall behind. Eric Schlosser explains how working in the slaughterhouses is the most dangerous profession – these poor working conditions and horrible treatment of employees in the plants are beyond comprehension to what we see in modern everyday jobs, a lifestyle most of us take for granted.
Schlosser talks about how meatpacking is the most dangerous job in the United States. He says “The injury rate in a slaughterhouse is about three times higher than the rate of a typical American Factory” (172). Every year more than forty thousand meat packing workers get injured (beyond first aid) in the US alone. That is a lot of people getting hurt for just doing their jobs. Some of the injuries that get reported are fatal, but “thousands of additional injuries and illnesses most likely go unrecorded” (172). The workers who apply for such jobs tend to be illegal immigrants who try to earn some money to send back home to their families. Because these immigrants do not “exist”, there would be no problem if one might get into an accident and die.
In the section titled "The Worst" in chapter 8, Schlosser writes, "Some of the most dangerous jobs in meatpacking slaughterhouses are performed by late night cleaning crews" (176). Most of these workers earn only one third the wages of regular production employees. The working conditions are horrid. The cleaners use a cleaning agent that is a mixture of water and chlorine, which reduces the visibility of the plants with "a thick, heavy fog" (177). There is nothing worse than not being able to breathe and working hard for ridiculous pay. The late night workers have to clean when the machines in the plants are still running. ...h and safety laws have been disregarded in the slaughterhouses, causing a number of deaths. Also, there is a great deal of corruption in the slaughterhouses where workers are being threatened or lied to, especially about their injuries. I couldn’t imagine a factory not providing any type of reimbursement if anybody got hurt on the job.
It is unjust that workers have to cover up their injuries in order to continue with their jobs or else they suffer unemployment or cuts to their wage. I’ve seen people trying work even if they were sick, but the supervisors would always send them home. The attitudes of the female workers in the slaughterhouses should also be considered – using sex to gain security in a workplace is unethical. There should be no need for people to get a more secure job just by doing sexual favors, regardless of whether it is consensual or not. I believe stricter observation of laws must be enforced to reduce the lack of safety and the corruption in the slaughterhouse work environment. There is nothing worse than an unsafe working environment.

It is not just the animals who are being treated wrongly. The workers are vulnerable and suffer from injuries on a daily basis. This workforce requires so much protection, such as chainmail outfits to protect themselves from tools. From cuts, sprains, to amputations, “ The injury rate in a slaughterhouse is about three times higher than the rate in a typical American factory.” (238). Many immigrants come to the states, some illegally. Companies give their supervisors bonuses when they have little reported injuries as a reward for a spectacular job. Regardless, these supervisors do not make attempts to make the work environment safer. They threaten the employees with their jobs. They will put injured employees on easier shifts to heal so it will not look suspicious as to why they are in pain. Next to failing to report injuries, women in the slaughterhouses suffer from sexual assault. Male coworkers pressure women into dating and sex. Reported cases include men using animal parts on them in an explicit manner, making work another kind of nightmare. Investigative journalist Eric Schlosser brings to light these realities in his bestselling book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. Schlosser, a Princeton and Oxford graduate, is known for his inspective pieces for Atlantic Monthly. While working on article, for Rolling Stone Magazine, about immigrant workers in a strawberry field he acquired his inspiration for the aforementioned book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, a work examining the country’s fast food industry (Gale).
In the book Fast Food Nation: The Darks Side of the All-American Meal, Eric Schlosser claims that fast food impacts more than our eating habits, it impacts “…our economy, our culture, and our values”(3) . At the heart of Schlosser’s argument is that the entrepreneurial spirit —defined by hard work, innovation, and taking extraordinary risks— has nothing to do with the rise of the fast food empire and all its subsidiaries. In reality, the success of a fast food restaurant is contingent upon obtaining taxpayer money, avoiding government restraints, and indoctrinating its target audience from as young as possible. The resulting affordable, good-tasting, nostalgic, and addictive foods make it difficult to be reasonable about food choices, specifically in a fast food industry chiefly built by greedy executives.

The damage that fast food had placed on illegal immigrant workers and sanitary workers that are employed in slaughterhouses are as much as murdering the men and women, minute by minute. The growth of fast food is too fast for our voices to be heard and fast food had implemented too much innovation in agriculture today for us to fix. We can still change the society that we live in today, as long as we withdraw our arrogant and selfish thoughts on fast food and think of ways to improve and recover what the fast food industry had done.

One of the first thing Schlosser address is work-related injuries. Schlosser states that more than “200,000 [tennagers] are injured on the job” (Schlosser 122). To the reader, this may be a large number, but in retrospect, it’s actually tiny. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, a report regarding workplace accidents in 1998 showed that a total of 5.9 million injuries was reported. In comparison, 200,000 only makes up 3.4% of the nationwide injuries making fast food restaurants relatively safe in that aspect. Schlosser misleads his audience by failing to give it a sense of scale or magnitude. Next, Schlosser concludes that due to the increased job opportunities for teenagers, as a result, fast food restaurants had become a target for robbers and other violent crimes. Schlosser backs up his statement through extreme examples of robbery cases and a few obscure statistical reports. First Schlosser lists numerous extreme examples of violent crime cases that resulted in a homicide. “A former cook… became a fast food serial killer, murdering two workers… three workers…” (Schlosser 127). Schlosser hopes that these examples will appeal to the emotions of the reader, in order to persuade that fast food restaurants had become a hub for violent crimes. While he lists many examples of this, these are individual cases that resonate a rather extreme case. Schlosser uses these example to visualize to the reader, that this is how most robberies end up when it isn't the case. The use of pathos in these examples exaggerate the problem beyond the actual scope. While this may be effective, it fails to provide complete transparency between the author and the audience. Eric grew up in Manhattan, New York and also in Los Angeles where his father, Herbert Schlosser, was President of NBC. He attended the college of Princeton University where he studied American History, and soon getting his in British Imperial History. Eric’s career soon took off when he became a journalist for The Atlantic Monthly, quickly earning two medals in a matter of two years. After that he wrote Fast Food Nation in 2001 soon created it into a film in 2006 called Chew on This. With fast food quickly integrating itself into American diets, more and more meatpacking factories emerge to satisfy the supply. The regular jobs in these factories are already very dangerous, involving sharp tools, heavy animals, and unsanitary working conditions. The factory workers are at risk of lacerations, amputations, skin diseases, muscle and nerve damage, and death (Compa). Annually, more than a fourth of slaughterhouse workers, around forty thousand people, suffer from work-related injuries or diseases that require treatment beyond first aid. These statistics are most likely an understatement, because many injuries go unreported (Schlossner).
Honor codes are important guidelines, keeping students from cheating and plagiarizing; however, they are often not applied in the way that they should be. This makes them just suggestions that occasionally lapse through students’ minds. While honor codes do exist in they are rarely ever truly effective. The current honor code implemented at Bartlett High School should be revised and reinforced in order for it to be efficient.
An honor code can affect students’ behavior positively by the student knowing between what is right and what is wrong; that builds a principle that student will follow for the rest of their life. Honor codes reduce the amount of cheating that is occurred in classrooms, this is very beneficial since cheating is looked at very negatively since it is a very dishonest way of showing your knowledge. Also, if a student has cheated their whole way through high school, their life would be much more difficult. An honor code not only gives a school a better name, but it also shows that the kids that come out of the school are honest and hard workers. We need honest hard workers for several important jobs, such as a doctor, etc. If people were cheating and did not learn what they were supposed to know for this job, that can become very harmful. Can you imagine going through the pain that animals in slaughterhouses went through? Most people don’t think of that part of it but the real fact is that billions of animals went through a painful life to be killed for food every year. Most people like to keep the thought in there heads that these animals live on beautiful green farms where they are treated great and then have a very peaceful death, and never feel any or little pain. Well that is not the case, these animals are treated very unfairly. The animals in slaughterhouses are given a massive amount of antibiotics, hormones, and drugs to keep them alive in conditions that are so bad they would otherwise kill them.
At Marquette High School, the handbook clearly states the honor code that all students are expected to follow. However, whether students follow expectation is up for question. Although it would be nice to believe that all students never cheat or plagiarize, reality is harsh. Some teachers use plagiarizing websites to check for plagiarism in essays. Some teachers use folders to try and block test takers from cheating. Some teachers even move students around during test day and monitor the class. Yet, students still find a way to cheat. Thus, in order to provide an equal opportunity for all students, my school’s honor code should be revised and restated to contain stricter regulations for students.
Some list specific violations as well as the punishment for each. Others are more general. For example, the honor code at the University of Virginia is one pithy statement: “On my honor as a student, I have neither given nor received aid on this assignment/exam (Source D).” In the same way, implementation of an honor code varies from school to school. Some require students to sign the honor code after each test and with each paper submission, while others require signatures only once a term. Despite these differences, the goal of each honor code is the same: to encourage students to practice academic honesty. However, the similarity in the goal of honor codes does not mean that honor codes will be successful at every
Johny Horsemen was sitting at his desk working his his test when all of a sudden Susie Johnson looked over his shoulder and copied off him. Little did he know that because he did not tell his teacher they had no way of knowing that Susie was the instigator and they both ended up suspended for the rest of the week because there was no honor code for his teacher to go by to see what to do. Not only did they get suspended but Johny’s grade dropped. Many schools that do not have honor codes do not know how to handle kids cheating. The wrong person gets excused without honor codes. Factory farms have portrayed cruelty to animals in a way that is horrific; unfortunately the public often does not see what really goes on inside these “farms.” In order to understand the conditions present in these factory farms, it must first be examined what the animals in these factory farms are eating. Some of the ingredients commonly used in feeding the animals inside factory farms include the following: animal byproducts, plastic, drugs and chemicals, excessive grains, and meat from members of the same species.
