Personal Reflection I grew up in a family full of educated individuals. Most of my family members went to college and had successful careers. I never saw my parents worried about their job. My dad is a teacher at the junior high in my hometown, so he always had a guaranteed paycheck. My mom had multiple jobs during my childhood, and she excelled at every position she was in. Her work ethic inspires me and I admire her determination. The habits of my friends and family only influenced me in a few ways. I have always been an individual that has to learn from their own mistakes. I am often stubborn, and I don’t listen to advice. In my household; my mom, my dad, my sister, and myself had dinner together almost every night. Family dinners were an important part of my childhood, especially when I would have dinner with my extended family, which we made a habit of doing at least once a month. Different members of my family had different diets and eating habits; …show more content…
My paternal grandparents are smart with their spending. They saved money their entire life, and now they are living peacefully in retirement. My maternal grandparents never went to college, so they did not have the high paying jobs that my other family members did. However, they are also very smart with money. They own a house in Redding, California and are both retired, living comfortably. My parents struggled with debt in the early years of my childhood. I remember the collector’s calls every day, and I was told to never answer phone calls starting with 1-800. Sometimes my cell phone would ring, and they would ask for my mother or father by name. Eventually, my parents filed for bankruptcy in 2008. We lost our house and began moving from rental home to rental home. My family currently lives in a rental home in Los Banos, California. My parents plan on buying their own house after my sister graduates high school in
In attempting to understand the blended family system, one would be remised if we did not first look at, and understand primarily what a family system dynamic is. Unfortunately, this is a theory that once had very clear cut lines; today those lines are a little burred and more subjective than ever before. Given that the family is an ever changing system with fluid boarders, this author will illustrate some finite distinctions that may separate the typical family system from a blended family system.
Traditionally families have dinner together and talk about their day. In the modern days many families don't even eat at a dinner table, My family normally spends dinner time all over the house. Nobody really sit down at the dinner table to eat and talk and explain our thoughts and feelings about our day. In the poems "Nurse" by Dorianne Laux and "Eating together" by Li-Young Lee they both demonstrates the importance of your family and enjoying every moment that you encounter with each other.
A family assessment is a process for gathering and organizing information in ways that can help a family prevent and or solve problems. The goal is to obtain a full understanding and unbiased view of the strengths and problems. A good assessment is about relationship building, engaging families in an exploration of their strengths, values and goals to build mutual trust and respect. Then when problems do arise, this relationship can be the foundation of open communication allowing the doors to open for identification of additional supports needed to reduce or eliminate the factors causing harm.
Since the last journal, a lot school wise has happened. I discovered a likeness for family interviewing, conducted my standardized client interview, and learned a lot in different areas in this class.
The unit of a family is the most prominent essential for all of us. As social human beings, we seek social support in order to thrive, and that is where family comes into play. A family is where you receive love, support, encouragement, and many other social benefits. The total number of households in the United States increased from 63 million in 1970 to 113 million in 2008 (Weeks, 2012). The family has influenced multitudes of people in many ways. The traditional family in the United States consists two-married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring also know as the nuclear family. However, the term of a true family has ultimately changed over the last 50 years especially for African Americans.
Family, a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Although family is a concretely defined term, the idea of family varies from person to person. But, what makes a family? For those who are surrounded by loving blood relatives, for those who have never known the one to grant them life, for those who have left their blood behind for a more loving and nurturing environment, what can commonly define a family? Family is something defined by the individual. Family includes those who you have come to love, whether platonically or romantically, those you have suffered with, those you have come to respect, and most importantly those you have cared for and in turn have cared for you. To one that could mean people who
Families accrue large amount of debt carelessly. Accumulating debt does not happen overnight. They fall in debt by not paying attention to where their money is going due and by their disproportionate spending. Families may also have an expensive life threatening health emergency, forcing them into financial struggle. However, life happens. Parents also get laid off their jobs and it takes months to find another one, so they depend on credit cards and loans to survive with their youngsters. Parents may not recognized the dangers the situation of being in debt. Nonetheless, if they are able to recognize the process of how the get in of debt, they might be able to avoid this stressful situation.
For my research topic I chose to write on the effects of expectation. The expectations of one’s family and one’s self can have a major influence on his/ her life. When some tries to live up to a high expectation it can cause the individual a great deal of stress. Therefore, the question the question I am researching is “Should family members- parents, grandparent, aunts or uncles- set high educational, relational, and moral expectations for their children?” In order to find information on this topic I acquired two articles from the University of South Carolina Library website. The first article is titled “High expectations for higher education perceptions of college and experiences of stress prior to and through college career.” This article
Families today just do not seem to spend time with each other. The mother and father both have jobs and tend to not be home for the children after school therefore causing more independence among each member of the family. Children that have more independence make mistakes on their own without being warned about them. Independent children have no guidance and get out of hand because there is not a strong boss type figure around most of the time to help distinguish the difference between right and wrong. Eating dinner as a family is a major tradition that has been forgotten as the years have gone by and caused more separation among the family. A family 50 years ago that did not eat dinner together would be a strange one but today it seems to be of the norm. Once again, the job affects this aspect of the family as well. People are just too busy at work or too tired to even participate in dinner at home anymore. Either families just do not have time for each other anymore or they just are not together due to divorce.
A social structure is made up from our surroundings and shape how individuals and groups interact and behave. This can include institutions, norms, and social hierarchies (New York University Department of Sociology, 2013). The definition of family has changed over the years and can be different for different people. A family is a group of people that have a legal connection that can be through marriage, adoption, or blood. It can also be made up by a positon of honor or need that is not a legal connection with people or pets you choose and share a close intimate bond with. A family can be made up of traditional or non-traditional means and have members with an active or inactive role within them (New York University Department of Sociology, 2013). It is beneficial to reflect on family as a social structure because this is where we all learn how to be a part of society and why we have roles. This is where we can learn what happens when roles breakdown and how to interact with others in a safe and nurturing environment. It will help prepare us to become part of society on a larger scale as we get older and have our own individual family unit. Then we will
Growing up, my parents weren’t well to do in a financial point of view. In fact, there was a point in their lives in which they were both in horrendous debt that affected the way we lived. This continued throughout my childhood and is still somewhat present till this day. Although divorced now, my parents, well, only my dad, is not the man that I would go to for financial advice. At one point, he was pretty much putting money in a paper shredder, watching it destroy our childhood bit by bit, paper by paper. On the contrary, almost all my cousins lived a financially stable childhood. In fact, they were all spoiled and given whatever toy they want, whatever new

I will also describe what family means to me, how mine differs from other families in my neighborhood, and also how they are similar. I will also describe my family’s ethnicity and how it may affect any of my family’s health.
No Longer Eating As A Family: A Bond is Broken I believe that us breaking our “ritual” was one small part of my family falling apart. Us ending our tradition of sitting at the dinner table together every night caused a great lack of communication between each of us. My parents were the most affected by the lack of communication. They eventually got to the point that they were just two people living in the same house.
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
