As the regular season has come to an end, the girls' volleyball team has displayed skill and intensity throughout the 4A Class with a 7-3 record and Penn Trafford Tournament Championship. The girls fell short on capturing their third consecutive section title; with a solid base of fundamentals and upfront talent, the girls aim to be a tough competitor in the upcoming playoffs. Kierstin Schade, a senior middle hitter, is a key player in the girls' success on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball. She was selected for both the second team all-WPIAL and all-section teams her junior year. Standing at 6'1'', rarely seen in the girls' WPIAL, Schade uses her long arms and high jump to absolutely stuff opponents at the net, and
She led the team to a Conference championship and a State Championship. As a Senior she was the #1 player in the nation, averaged a triple double with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. For the second consecutive year in history, she led the team to a state championship and led the nation in scoring. All four years in high school she was selected to be on the all-state team, all-region team, and all-conference team. During the summers of her High School years she would continue practicing and playing for an AAU team.
Helmet or no helmet? This controversial issue for girls lacrosse has been growing stronger each year. If you have ever seen men's lacrosse their uniforms are almost identical to a football player. While women only wear goggles and a mouth guard. So why why is this such a controversial issue? Shouldn’t women want to wear helmets for protection? There is a lot of evidence to review on the topic. In the articles titled, “A Case Against Helmets in Lacrosse.” by Alan Schwarz, the non-fiction piece titled “Headgear Rule for Girls” by Bill Pennington, another article named, “Helmets In Lacrosse” by Krystina Lucid, and “How Women's Field Lacrosse Differs from Men's Field Lacrosse” by James Hinkson and Joe Lombardi. Girls lacrosse should not wear more head gear/ a helmet because if they are protected they feel they can play a more aggressive game, the rules in girls lacrosse do not allow any
The team has become united and they continue to win their way through. They even had their own special warm up before the games started. The school also has become more united after the winning streak of the football players.
I play for the Marist College water polo team. I practice five days a week, for about four hours a day (6:45 am to 11:00 am). We are a spring sport and dedicate the entire fall semester to getting ready for spring season. We even cut our winter break down two weeks shorter to get in extra practice. Winter break practice is a lot harder because there are no rules and regulations on the amount of time we are allowed to practice. If the coaches so please, they can keep us in the water the entire time without a break. Now a coach would never do that because they would not be receiving maximum efficiency from us. We would be too exhausted but the point was that there are no rules for them. Our practices start off with a morning lift in
The girls’ junior varsity lacrosse team is composed up of younger athletes that will one day take the reins from their fellow upperclassmen varsity members.
It’s finally here. Citizens of Southold, it is time to put the sleds, snow-shovels, and ugly sweaters away for next winter, for Spring has finally sprung. Unfortunately, this is not entirely the case, as we have learned from an early-March 2-hour delay. However, it seems that some of our high school athletes have chosen to ignore those straggler snowstorms, for like a shadowless Punxsutawney Phil, Southold High School’s finest spring athletes have emerged from their hibernation dens to bring you, the average Southold sports fan, another exciting spring athletic season, with the Sentinel bringing you full coverage.
As Paige and I walked across the field towards our team I felt euphoric. Four long years of work, sweat, and dedication had led up to this night. It was the perfect end to my senior year of softball. The scoreboard just beyond the mass of sweaty, screaming softball players read 15-0. This was the final score of the district championship game, a game my team had never won before. The applause and cheers of the fans echoed in my ears for hours afterward
We were going to win the game. That was the end of it. I knew it. We were the winners of that game. I stood up and yelled in a voice that even frightened me. I didn’t scream about moving our feet, or calling the ball, I screamed about how big of winners we were. I was done with moping. For seven minutes of my life, I had forgotten that I could do anything I set my mind to, and I had given up. The worst seven minutes of my volleyball career were those seven minutes in the third game of the final match at Brighton Volleyball Tournament. I had put my determination down to wallow in my disappointment. Disappointment needs to build determination. I had decided a long time ago that there were certain things in life that I could do better than other people. Those were my gifts. I use my gifts to my full potential.
In Sharon Lockhart’s 1997 image, Goshogaoka Girls Basketball Team Group #1, the viewer is engrossed by the clear, hard-edged collection of four photographs, each depicting young girls decked out in blue and red jerseys participating in a simple game of basketball. Arms out, playfully shoving, and cheering sets the scene. Lockhart utilizes harsh lighting and colors which consequently depict the innocence budding from young girls, even while playing a game of basketball. In a series of four photographs, Lockhart tugs on the viewer’s heartstrings as the air is filled with doe eyed, genuine excitement and the underlying sense of awkwardness and confusion.
Volleyball is one of the biggest team sports there are. It is big in the summer olympics and all around the world men and women play it every day. The game of volleyball was originally called “mintonette”, it was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 at Springfield College in Massachusetts, they made it along with basketball. In 1957 volleyball was officially an Olympic sport, the first games were held in Tokyo 1964 and the first beach volleyball games were in 1996 Atlanta. In London 2012, USA got 12 silver medals. In the Olympics, the Soviet Union has won the most medals. The best country right now is Brazil, winning gold medals in London 2012. One of the best volleyball players from Minnesota right now is Tori Dixon who played for the Gophers
It has taken many years for women to gain a semblance of equality in sports. Throughout history, women have been both excluded from playing sports and discriminated against in sports. Men’s sports have always dominated the college athletic field, but women were finally given a fighting chance after Title IX was passed. Title IX, among other things, requires scholarships to be equally proportioned between men and women’s sports. Although this was a huge gain for women, gender inequality still exists in sports today. An example of this persisting inequality can be seen when looking at men’s baseball and women’s softball. In college, baseball and softball are both major NCAA sports. It is widely accepted throughout today’s society that baseball is a man’s sport, and softball is a woman’s sport. Very few people question why the two sexes are separated into two different sports, or wonder why women play softball instead of baseball. Fewer people know that women have been essentially excluded from playing baseball for a long time. This paper will focus on why softball has not changed the way women’s basketball has, why women continue to play softball, the possibilities and dynamics of women playing baseball with and without men, and the most discriminating aspect of women being banned from playing professional baseball.
Description: Blocking in Volleyball Blocking is a very important defensive aspect of volleyball at higher levels. Blocking is one of the hardest skills to learn, and does not always show direct results. The
Upon my arrival I sat in a corner of the lounge on a blue low one seater couch. There were four more small blue couches with tables next to me along the wall. And four big navy blue couches in the middle that can be converted into one huge bed. The walls on both sides of me were covered of sports photography. One frame had a picture with all the softball girls crowded together for a silly group picture, the other frame consisted with the volleyball boy in a huddle before a game. In total there are about fifteen frames with pictures of individual athletes, teams, and or the scenery in which the teams are playing in. To my left looking toward the stair cases, on the other side of the escalator there is a wall which separates the lockers that
Six long hours after departing Hotchkiss, we finally reached our destination. We pulled into the parking lot of the Super 8 just off Interstate 76 in Sterling, Colorado. Since I had been to this hotel on a previous trip to Sterling, I began wishing I had brought my swimsuit along. Mom and dad went inside and got the keys for room 129. I was so sick of riding in the car that I did not care what the room looked like as long as there was a bed for me to sleep on. As we entered the room, on the left there was the bathroom sink, a mirror, and a place to hang our "good" clothes. To the right, was the miniature bathroom. There was not enough space in there for a midget. Stepping out of the entranceway, there was a wooden dresser with a 27-inch television. By the large window, there was a small table. Two queen size beds sat on either side of the nightstand. The purple patterned quilts were quite shocking compared to everything else in the room.
Volleyball today has little resemblance to its predecessors. The modern version of volleyball played today has changed so much compared to the original game. The rules and scoring systems have changed multiple times. Equipment and technique have changed a fair amount too. But one of the original ideas from William G. Morgan that has stood the tests of time, the original goal of the sport. The goal to have a sport for all ages that brings people together to have fun and exercise together.
