Kids in Sports Today, most adolescents are getting involved in many activities. Teens are taking harder classes, and participate in harder sports/clubs. Although most kids are getting involved, there are others who occupy their time at home and see the benefits of being in a sport. They are spending their free time alone, and not engaging in any physical activity. This behavior can impact how these kids interact, and it can affect their health. Kids who don’t exercise are at risk of obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Not being involved in sports can cause a kid to not generate social skills. Kids who participate in sports have better GPA’s (averagely) than kid who don't participate in anything. Kids learn crucial skills that help them work and understand more at school. Social skills are important to learn as a developing child. Teens often become depressed when they don't have anyone to talk to. They may feel alone, and feel like they aren't important. This depression may lead to self harm, or suicide. Kids who don't learn these skills can end up being socially challenged, and depressed. Sports can open kids up and teach them communication skills, decisive action, teamwork, and time management. A report from True Sport, a website that provides information about all sports, says that kids who are involved in sports have higher levels of social support, and that the sense of community created with teammates, coaches, and family members incubates the perfect setting for critical self-esteem development (Maslen). Kids who play sports are eight times as likely to be fit at age 24 as kids who didn’t play sports ("Facts: Sports Activity and Children.").
