Poverty is the most critical issue facing Kern County children today. It serves as the root to many other critical issues children are faced with. Stemming from poverty these critical issues include inadequate health care, poor academic performance, as well as emotional /social behavioral problems. Children living in poverty are at increased risk for a wide range of physical health problems and conditions; including more severe and frequent chronic diseases, poorer nutrition and growth, inadequate access to health care, lower immunization rates; and increased obesity. Students raised in poverty are very prone to stressors that undermine school behavior and performance. The effects of poverty set a standard of low expectations to children.
