Is Hunting a “Sport”?
Hunting is defined as the activity of killing wild animals. In ancient times, it was crucial for human’s survival as it was means of obtaining food, clothing etcetera, but in modern times it is just a violent form of recreation. In reading “Is hunting a “sport”, the writer John Alan Cohan concludes that “hunting is not and ought not to be referred to as a sport” (Cohan) and emphasize on decommissioning of hunting as a sport. In this paper I will argue in favour of author’s cessation, on account of reasonable grounds examined in the reading.
Firstly, the techniques that are used in hunting are morally unacceptable as they aggregates cruelty towards animals. Many animals suffer painful and prolonged deaths when they are only injured but never recovered by hunters. Further, for instance in “wing shooting” hunters use to blast the doves i.e. Birds of peace into pieces and about 20 % of birds are left crippled and untretrieved and in “Contest kills” live animals are killed in front of cheering crowd for money and prizes. Furthermore, there are many other inhumane practices such as contaminating the burrows of small animals with kerosene and tar, so that they cannot return to them and hence can be easily dislodged by …show more content…

As in sports, according to Fair opportunity principle, to ensure an unbiased game, players are fairly characterized or matched, but in hunting animals are lured and manipulated in a way that give hunters “asymmetrical power advantage”(Cohan) as animals are provided with no guns to shoot back and defend themselves. Furthermore, “sports are competitive games”(Cohan) in which players play against each other and tend to agree on rules of the game but by contrast ,in hunting animals are not capable of comprehending the rules and hence they cannot be identified as real participants
