Since my last year of high school has started, I have been apart of events and worked on projects that exemplify my growth as an academic student and as a global citizen. The job shadow project and career presentation I worked on in English class both reflect my growth in college and career readiness. The tree planting event I attended as apart of H.O.P.E. reflects my growth as a global citizen through taking action in my community.
So far in English class, this semester has been mostly about finding ourselves and figuring out where and what we would like to do in the near future. The beginning of the semester consisted of personality quizzes that matched us with careers we would work best in. This soon helped us truly find a career that

interested us. Before doing these personality quizzes I had no idea what I wanted to do; I often gave myself random careers that I thought would be good for me, but never really were.
The quizzes told me that I worked well with people, and I that I would do best by working with new people on a daily basis. The projects, like the mask we created, allowed me to find out how I viewed the world, and what I can do for the people in it. I came to the realization that an the career of an optometrist would fit me well, since they work with patients for at most 15 minutes without physically touching them. My next task was to contact an optometrist that would allow me to shadow them for a couple hours of their day. This shadow would give me confirmation that this career is a good match for me, which it did. Observing the doctor I shadowed, made me want to pursue this career with greater desire. After the shadow, it was time to prepare for the career presentation I would give to an sophomore advisory. For this presentation, I had to research the steps to get to this career and the different aspects of the career, like the annual salary. I found out the that I had to earn my bachelor’s degree, move onto school of optometry, and then …show more content…
get licensed by the state to become an official optometrist; I also learned that optometrists make about $120,000 a year. Preparing for this presentation allowed me to finally know what career would fit my personality and best, and helped me figure out every single step I need to take in order to achieve my goals. I now know what programs I must put myself in, and what schools would prepare me best for my future career as an optometrist. In October, the members of H.O.P.E., teamed up with students from CSUN in order to work with families and plant trees on the G3 campus.
My role in this event was to be a team leader. This means I had to help families plant the trees, and guide them every step of the way. Before this event, I knew I worked well with people I was comfortable with, and I was comfortable with public speaking, but this was something new. I had to work with strangers to get something laborious done. It was a new challenge. The first family I worked with only spoke spanish, and that was a tough challenge, I couldn’t find all the words to say, but luckily we got through it and got it done. I worked with multiple families, each with their own character. With each family, I learned to find the best way to work with them. Whether it was a family of five with three children, a family of two or a family of seven, I found a way to help them get the task done. In this tree planting event, I learned to work with different types of strangers in order to get something productive done; I also took action in my community. In total we planted about 30 trees on the G3 campus in order to both beautify the school, and create a cleaner environment for the students and faculty at G3. After planting all the trees, I realized how important it is for our community to have trees so that we can have more sources of oxygen. Like many, I took trees and oxygen for granted, but this event made me appreciate the work that
goes in planting trees, and the benefits that we gain from trees alone. So far, senior year has allowed me to gain new skills, and knowledge that will help me in the near future. I am now more comfortable working with new people, and more aware of my community environmentally.
After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Up to this point, I have job shadowed at a medical billing company and I like the idea of diagnosing and helping people, but a desk job is not ideal. Also, I took a medical terminology as a class and I discovered that I like how the body works and what it does. These factors have all influenced my career goal.
Erik Erikson was heavily influenced by Freud but while Freud was an ID psychologist, Erikson was an ego psychologist. Erikson stressed that the development of the ego depended heavily on personal and social aspects. “According to Erikson, the ego develops as it successfully resolves crises that are distinctly social in nature. These involve establishing a sense of trust in others, developing a sense of identity in society, and helping the next generation prepare for the future” (McLeod, S. 1970). His theory focused on personality development through eight distinct stages. He believed that personality progressed in a stacking or pre-determined manner, this is referred to as the epigenetic principle. One must
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
My interest into becoming an optometrist had begun when I was in high school; it happened in an unconventional way. It was not through watching videos, or someone explaining to me what optometry was, but rather, seeing the power of it firsthand. There was a point in my life where I felt emotions that I was unable to comprehend at the time. Seeing a family member on an operating table was the most petrifying moment that I have gone through, especially when the person on the table was my father. My father had to get a chalazion removed from his right eyelid. The doctor told my family that my father would be susceptible to certain health risks because of his diabetes and the severity of his cyst. This procedure was the hardest thing I have had to deal with in my life because it made me feel helpless. Usually, when my dad needs help he always asks me, but this time I could not do anything. It is interesting to think that something so small had such a big affect on my life.
Over the course of two semesters I shadowed Dr. Robert Marsh as he interacted with countless and diverse patients seeking orthopedic treatment. Through my observation, I had the opportunity to experience the doctor patient relationship and the great responsibility that relationship entailed. His passion and commitment to every patient he helped, taught me that to care for and respect the patient is just as important as treating their injuries. This experience taught me that as a physician you need to work with the patient as well as those around you (residents/physicians/nur sing staff) in order to be a reliable source of information and have the insight for the patient’s well-being.
This reflective essay will lay emphasis on one of the learning needs I have developed during my two week taster placement in hospital. Reflection helps an individual build upon their skills and makes room for self-criticism as he or she can contemplate upon actions and make relevant changes (Taylor, 2000). I will be applying the “What”, “So what” and “Now what” model of reflection by Driscoll (2000) in this piece of work because it is a more coherent and comprehensible approach to follow when writing a reflective account and is also an easier guide to writing reflections. The learning need I chose to reflect on from my learning plan is having a better understanding of diabetes and the 6 basic medications used in treating the condition since it is a common illness on the ward I am have been allocated on for my first placement. The timescale set for achieving this objective was by the end of my two week placement that is from 27th January to 9th February and I achieved it with the help of a host of factors. In this assignment, all the names of the patients and wards have been omitted and indicated with letters and numbers for confidentiality reasons as stated in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct (2008). The paper will primarily touch on the type 2 diabetes and furthermore on the achievement on my learning need.
my career choices, and I look forward to what the next three weeks of class will bring to the table
A person’s interest has for always seemed to shape the character of a person in a positive perspective. Along with it, one can learn substantial information about themselves. In regards to how we illuminate our character, our interests seems to be a determining factor as to how we get involved and more importantly, provide self-development. As for myself, I enjoy doing an array of activities; I play sports, I am a member of the ROTC Ranger Challenge team, and I volunteer frequently. My interests do surely represent who I am as a person. Along with interests, one can see considerable accomplishments. Luckily, I was able to see such accomplish throughout my life, but more notably in my high school career. I began my freshman year of 2011 by
Shadowing in autopsies satisfied my early high school curiosity in that I was able to understand the anatomy of the human body. Knowing the appearance of a normal organ helped me to recognize when an organ was abnormal whether that was through weight or appearance. I have learned that the human body encapsulates teachable knowledge and evidence that leads to the diagnosing of disease and corresponding treatment. My time spent shadowing in autopsies confirmed my interest in learning more about the field of medicine and the doctor’s role in direct patient care. I have shadowed Dr. Simmons, a cardiology specialist and Dr. Fitzhugh at the NIH sickle cell department. In cardiology, I witnessed the physician’s role in patient education regarding
When I was about to be graduated of High School, I still didn’t have a clear vision of what my vocation would be. Having had achieved one of the highest GPA in high school, I was guaranty the admission to any career I wanted; hence, I had to make a decision of what career I had to select. Consequently, I visited a dental clinic located a few blocks from my house to find out what it was like to be a dentist. I approached a doctor and asked her to allow me to observe her for a few days to find out what it was like to be a dentist. It didn’t take more than one day for me to fall in love with the profession.
In this essay/report I will explain to the best of my abilities, my possible career path. I have wanted to be many things. In grade 1, I wanted to be a superhero, and that hope stayed out for a while. Later on, when I was 10, my brain started getting new ideas, exploring the world around me, thinking of other things aside form cartoons and I thought to myself, how in the world am I going to become a superhero? I started thinking of other jobs like firefighter, police officer, engineer, construction worker etc., etc. But then I decided it was no good. Then one day when I was watching an interview on TV, a firefighter was being interviewed and one of the questions was: How long did it take you to decide what you wanted to be? And he said a long time. Then I wondered how long a long time would be, I wanted to jump into the TV and ask the guy how long a long time was. Hmm, I wondered, how long is a long time and then I answered my question. “It’s going to be a long time ‘till it’s a long time, I’ve got nothing to worry about.” That question just flew off my mind until at the start of grade eight when I encountered this question again, and I answered it. It took a while and some research but I answered it. I want to be a Neurosurgeon when I grow up.
Seeing how they work and execute everything, and especially the process, makes me interested and ask how they do it. Wanting to know the background, what they have to study and undergo to get to that certain point is also a reason as to why I picked it for this specific project. Usually when asked what I want to be in the future or what career would I pick, I just say optometry in general, but to be honest it’s more than just optometry, would I want to work with anybody who are adults, kids, or maybe even babies? Each one has its pros and cons, depending on who it is and what kind of person you
Growing up, I was a gregarious, easygoing, and curious child. When everyone said the career they wanted, I was always unsure and felt uncomfortable discussing my career. My journey to love the field of Health and Sciences began when I was learning about smart device technology at school. Subsequently,
This is my first semester in college. Being a new college student, I was very nervous about how college life went about and how I would manage school, work, and raising my child. Thankfully, this class is required for incoming students, or else I never would have thought to take it. Throughout this semester, I have learned more about myself, what I truly value, my personality type, my multiple intelligences, my learning style, and how these are all correlated to my long- term career goal.
Choosing a career can be challenging, because there are so many career options, but overcoming the challenges of achieving those careers can be proven to be difficult sometimes. When I was a little girl, I use to play pretend doctor most of the time. I use to pretend giving injections to my little brothers and pretend to nurse them back to health. As I became older, I was very certain that I wanted to become a pediatrician doctor; however, once I enrolled myself into a Community College, my perspective changed. I learned that everything was not as simple as I thought. I became uncertain of the career I wanted to strive. However, I learned from some of my professors, my peers, and friends that sometimes there are careers that best suit us based
