“Jiro Dreams of Sushi” is a documentary about an 85 year old man, Jiro, who is one of the best sushi chefs. Jiro owns a very small sushi restaurant that only seats 10 guests, and earned three stars from Michelin Guide. Three stars is the highest rating you can get Michelin Guide. Yamamato, the food writer, said in order to receive three stars from Michelin Guide you must have all three of the following standards: quality, originality, and consistency. Jiro met all three of the standards so he received the three stars from Michelin Guide. Not many restaurants have acquired three stars from Michelin Guide. You must be one of the best chefs to obtain three stars from Michelin Guide. Jiro is one of the best chefs around, and is the best sushi chef
Jiro’s son Yoshikazu talked a little about Jiro retiring during the film. Yoshikazu stated the only time retirement was thought about for Jiro was when he was hospitalized at age 70 and when the new branch of Jiro’s sushi restaurant was opened by his youngest son in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, Japan. Jiro said that he hasn’t really thought about retirement much. He said if you take away his work he will be nothing because he fell in love with his work and that is what he knows. As you can see Jiro is one man who has devoted his life to his work by hoping to improve his skills every day and letting nothing get in the way of his work.
When I think to see if I know any like Jiro, a dedicated hard working man, I think of my Uncle Rick. My uncle has also devoted his life to his work. My uncle does what he loves by working on cars and building houses. His typical routine in a day is to work in his auto shop, and work on houses on the side as jobs come around. He works from about nine in the morning to ten at night seven days a week. Sometimes he works even longer too make sure the job gets done the right way and on time. My uncle has always said his work is important and means a lot to
The forward-tracking movement as used in Ernie's restaurant suggests the forward-tracking shot that is used throughout the film to show Madeleine has an allure for Scottie. Ernie's scene evokes the backward-tracking shot used throughout the film to show how Scottie is bonded to his object of desire. Together they bring out the character that an individual is playing in the film. The camera movement in Ernie’s Restaurant brings out forward and backward tracks that defines the point-of-view structure, but here the camera movement does not straight forwardly articulate a point of view. Instead, the camera is self-consciously sets up to show the relationship between the elements of the point-of-view structure that the rest of the film enacts.
The documentary LaLee Kin is based on a family from Tallahatchie County, who has fallen on harsh times. Laura Lee Wallace, known as LaLee, took care her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She provided shelter, clothing and food. LaLee was introduced to poverty at an early age, she discontinued her education to pick cotton for income. As she grew older her monthly income came from fixing lunch for the farm workers. We have all heard it time and time again, “Get your education.” In fact: it has been embodied in our skills. The economy being what it is, no education generally leads to unemployment.
Blackfish is a documentary based on the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that has taken the lives of several people whilst in captivity. This documentary underscores problems within the multi-billion sea-park industry, describes man's relationship to nature, and how little has been learned about these highly intelligent mammals.
Starting off with high hopes, I quickly came to realize that job opportunities were hard to find. I came to have a lot of respect for anyone who felt that college was not right for them and went on to pursue manual jobs or any job out of the white-collar spectrum. His biggest examples are his mother the waitress, known as Rosie and his uncle the mechanic, known as Joe. Rosie and Joe found success and happiness in their jobs that most people look down upon.
Since the last century, the City of New York has been epicenter of the entertainment industry. Its neighborhoods and the many emblematic places such as The Empire State building or the Statute of Liberty have been part of the most ambitious films. Accordingly, New York City is one of the famous metropolises around the world. Besides the attractions and places that belong to this urban jungle, its undeniable fame is due to its appearance as an arena in production films. One of my favorites movies filmed in New York City is “Carlito’s Way”.
Throughout the US, millions of POC students exposed to the traditional, rather outdated version of US History. Never do the textbooks explicitly mention and/ or explain the terrorizing, constant stripping down of others’ cultures and appropriating it into the dominant group of predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon and protestant. For many Mexican American students, they can’t relate to anything in the text, nor do they share an interest in the coursework provided. The way US history sets up doesn't teach and somehow excludes Indigenous backgrounds or for the most part was never taught in the classroom but, rather briefly mentioned in one or two paragraphs. Immigrants from diverse groups built this country yet their culture is consistently shown
Chinatown is regarded by many as one of the best films ever created. In 2007, The American Film Institute named “Chinatown” as #21 on their list of 100 greatest films! Chinatown is a great film because it is able to show how far people are willing to go to obtain riches and how a detective is willing to go to great lengths to solve the mysteries in front of him. The movie has been talked about in abundance and has even been influenced by real life events from the water company in Los Angeles. It is closely related to corruption and the 1% which people still talk about till this day. In the movie “Chinatown” directed by Roman Polanski, a private detective hired to expose an adulterer finds that he is caught up in a web of deceit, corruption, and murder. Somewhat relating to this is the article “Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%” written by Joseph E. Stiglitz. In the article Stiglitz writes about how democracy in America is a mirage and that the rich
The 2009 movie Food Inc. describes the major role that food production plays within many lives. This movie revealed that there is a very small variety of companies that consumers purchase their food from. These few companies actually control what is out on the shelves and what we put into our bodies. These companies have changed food production into a food production business. Many of these companies experiment with ways to create large quantities of food at low production costs to result in an enormous amount of profit for themselves. Some of the production cost cuts also result in less healthy food for the population. Instead of worrying about the health of the population, the companies are worried about what will make them the most money.

What is it that can drive a single individual to work harder than their fellow members, and how does they benefit from working harder? When the thought of how a hard working individual is different from the normal person in society, a few thing can be thought. Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book, Outliers, that “if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires,” (Gladwell 151). This phrase made me questions previous parts of the book, but he had shown subtle hints of this in the early sections of the book where luck seemed to determine everything. Most of the audience have experienced the affects gained from working hard, or at least have heard about them. These examples
Stan Witty, my grandfather, was an extremely determined man, but he was always changing what he was doing. Just as he was getting far in one thing, he would get bored and want to try something new. Stan would do anything from selling candy to logging. Stan was always a very creative man, and he was very handy as well. He would always find ways of fixing something himself instead of paying someone to do it for him. He had a very good work ethic and did whatever pleased him.
“Whatever our struggles and triumphs, however we may suffer them, all too soon they bleed into a wash, just like watery ink on paper” (Golden pg.428). The novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden, is about a world where deception is prominent, where the main character Sayuri faces many hardships before she is able to achieve success as a Geisha. This is shown through multiple events in the novel such as, Mr. Tanaka selling Sayuri into slavery, which leads to something better as she finds love and eventually benefits from the betrayal. This is also shown through Hatsumomo, as her constant deception throughout the novel leads to Sayuri becoming the most popular geisha in Gion, eventually rendering Hatsumomo powerless, and through the betrayal
It has been said that if someone works really hard and pushes oneself to become more than what one is, then he/she will make something out of his/her life. This statement is not always true though, because it depends on the person who is attempting the task. One would find just as many people who would agree with this point as to those who would oppose this view. For example, take these two works by two completely different authors, “Woman Work” by Maya Angelou; which tells of a women’s many tasks that she must complete, but unfortunately she has nothing to call her own, and the song “She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer, which is about a women who works extremely hard every day just to make ends meet, but she will never give up. Both
Hard work is a reasonably straightforward phrase. People work hard to achieve their aspirations but, would prefer to immerse in comfort. Furthermore, I was constantly around people that strive for greatness. Although, they would cease their goals when they have reached a place of comfort. I have never understand why people would stop chasing their goals when they are making progress. To put it differently, My dad consistently told me to work hard and accomplish what he could not, I never knew what he meant by that. As a kid, I always thought he was just giving me a lecture about how I need to focus on school. However, the more I learned as I grew up, I finally get his words. Important to realize, my parents had to sacrificed so much to be able
