Anoushka Samant, P ½ , #17 DARE TO STAND UP (Question) How would you feel if you were bullied? I assure you that no matter how you were bullied, you would still feel belittled and insecure. (Topic Sentence) It’s truly preposterous that millions of students all over the world reside in suffrage because they are being bullied either physically, verbally, or socially. (Background Information) One example was Jamie Nabozny, a school boy who attended Ashland schools and was tormented all through his middle and high school years. This was all because of the fact that he was homosexual. Nobody stood up to the bullies; instead they all stood back and watched. (Thesis) This is why it is so important for people to stand up to bullies and to help …show more content…
(Evidence) Despite the fact that he didn’t fight back, he stood strong through his years of torment and intimidation. He had pleaded several times for the principals at his schools to help his situation, but they proved to be not conducive at all. He persevered and reaped his reward later when he was slightly older and took his case to court. Imagine suing a school! (Elaboration of Evidence) His decision was not warmly welcomed as he received threats and insults from people who thought it was insane to sue a place of learning. However, he and the people supporting him wanted his justice and fought his way towards it. His case was first declined, but once a popular lawyer came to their side to assist, the case was accepted at federal court. With the aid of the lawyer and some surprising witnesses, such as one of the bullies himself, they won the case. (Evidence Supports Thesis Statement) This shows that in one way, he stood up for himself. He might have not done it at the time when he was bullied, but he made sure he got justice for other’s discourteous actions. While some people despised his decision, he deserved every penny of the $900,000 compensation he received, or the fact that he obtained his much deserved
David Hicks was a 34 year old black male. He was on death row in Texas from December of 1987 to April of 1988, sentenced to die by lethal injection for rape and murder, on April 25th 1988, of his 87-year-old grandmother, Ms. Ocolor Heggar. David was only a suspect because he was near her house at the time of the crime. There was no indication that he had been inside¡Xexcept, for DNA evidence. The DNA test determined that similarities between sections of DNA removed from David¡¦s blood and DNA recovered from semen in Ms. Heggar¡¦s house would occur only one time in a total of 96 million people.
The use of specific examples such as anti-bullying in Edmonton, Canada, and political views of Democrats in Austria to give the reader physical places and people to link the thesis to everyday life. Leo also uses statistics to demonstrate to the reader the absurdity of some “nannyism’’ policies. In line eight, he uses the definition of a bully to show that 99 percent of students would be defined as one. Therefore, he shows how the simple idea of an anti-bullying program would require much more work than originally thought.
In 1893, Simon Pokagon spoke at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. He was a prominent tribal leader who was known for this speech. So much so, it was printed and turned into an informative pamphlet. The speech encompassed American history and it’s push Westward, detailing the destruction of the Native lands and culture forever. He begins by telling the crowd about how he cannot celebrate with them in this great big new city, because it reminds him of all that was lost. Pokagon states, “where stands this “Queen City of the West” once stood the red man’s wigwams;” (Page 32). A bold statement follows about how nature was plentiful, until pale face came with their
At the beginning of this essay I told a story about the bully and how you stood up to the bully because of your vision to make the neighborhood a better place. What a shame that you ultimately lost your fight because of your inability to remain ethical during the battle.
During the 60’s and 70’s, people have thrashed out with their words and each other. This caused some awareness in schools due to the offensiveness of the matter. During the 80’s schools began on focusing on preventing this kind of speech on their campuses. Since then, students have become more and more sensitive in a negative way. The authors used an example of a kid shouting “Shut up, you water buffalo” at an Israeli born student. That incident made national news, just for calling another kid a “water buffalo.” Another example is when a university found a student guilty of racial harassment for reading a book honoring student opposition to the Ku Klux Clan. The picture on the cover of the book offended one of the student’s co-workers. Just because the student was reading a book, minding his own business, the student was punished from the university. Never said anything or hurt anyone physically, and his education was ruined by someone taking offense to a book he was reading. The authors used this extreme example to prove that accepting the fact that student are fragile and letting them be fragile is not the right way to go and the past can prove
...proved how the statement of a single witness can drastically affect the outcome of a trail and how a person’s actions or inactions can make both good and bad differences just like Mary Podlesny had a negative effect on Nabozny’s life during middle school. Today bullying is still a major issue; over 3.2 million students are bullied each year and an average of 9 out of 10 LGBT kids say they been bullied. Many of these victims are afraid to ask for or are refused help from their schools and school districts. However, that does not mean nothing can be done to help bullied individuals, even just one person taking a stand against bullying can make a huge difference and if there is anything everyone can agree upon it is that no one wants to be bullied. So take a stand against bullying, make a difference, and maybe, just maybe, make the world a bit better in the process.
Asher was a bully who hurt Leonard in ways that could never be forgiven, causing Leonard to consider suicide. Due to the torture he was put through, Leonard decides to commit suicide and avenge his bully. This led me to create my GRQ about the effects of bullying on teenagers and how it can ultimately lead to violence, even suicide. Once in 6th grade while researching a project about bullying, I came across a new word: “bullycide”, which is when someone commits suicide due to bullying. It was a maudlin topic, but it also was interesting to learn about the idea from the viewpoints of the bully and the victim. During my research, I’m expecting to find some psychological effects on self-esteem and how bullying can corrupt self-esteem. Also, I know I will find many real-life examples of these tragedies such as Columbine and some survivor stories in which victims of bullying explain why they felt compelled to consider suicide. I predict my research will show how bullying affects both the victim and the bully because in many cases, they both are struggling with mental or emotional
In our world, there are people who judge mostly on everything or anyone. Living in a world which people judge on people’s appearance is an unfair judgment towards the person due to the fact of not knowing who that person is. That’s why segregation was a huge part in history during the pasting of the Civil Act of 1964. The definition of segregation is the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment. During the segregation it was basically a battle between the white people and the black people. This battle made it where at the point blacks had their own school and the whites had their own school, so they wouldn’t have to be near each other during this time. The story “Battle Royal” is a story that can relate towards segregation. In the story “Battle
Document C, states that K.K., a 12th grade student from Musselman High School made a discussion group on Myspace that accused a peer, S.N., of being sexually promiscuous and that she invited 100 people from her school to join and 24 actually accepted. This is an example of how cyberbullying disrupts learning, the 12th grader not only harassed her peer, but she also invited various students from school to join her and many did. K.K. disrupted the school by inviting others to join her in humiliating S.N., this not only has an effect on the victim, but it also has an effect on how the victim actually feels at school. After being cyberbullied by a classmate school can become an environment of fear and disrespect, preventing the victims from learning. Students also feel insecure, embarrassed, and unsafe. Students’ shouldn’t have to deal with extra stress at school because school is already stressful as it
The harassment allowed this black man to empower himself as he gained his self pride and realized that his self pride is what keeps him strong. Knowing that the
As a result from extreme hard work and perseverance followed by an unmatchable drive to succeed, Donald J. Trump has earned the right to be known as a multi-billionaire, real estate icon, and President of the United States of America. Reflecting on his life, he has faced many challenges and overcame them all. To understand how he rose to success and his journey to the top of the kingpin, it is important to recognize how he saw the american dream and pursued it. Today, many recognize him as the president but very few can fully grasp all that he has done in his life. From his start as a real estate mogul, to his impact on media, there are many questions as to how he became so recognizable today.
The paper drifts from one topic to another, making it difficult for the reader to follow along with the parent’s true message. By interjecting personal information into his argument, the paper loses credibility and makes for a boring message. Despite the man’s poor delivery he does make a good case against the teacher, but went about it in a way that was not productive. The parent clearly wants to see his daughter make academic progress, and that alone is reason enough to pay attention to his speech.
Thesis statement: Approximately three thousand people get bullied everyday, and at some point in our life we got bullied, even though not everyone is the same, for some other people their situation is worse.
The introduction gave an appreciable background information of the topic, in terms of defining terms. However, the grabber wasn’t completely effective in catching the reader’s attention. The writer could have used a shocking statistical fact like the one stated in paragraph 2 rather than simply defining the term bullying. Furthermore, a transition sentence is needed to link the grabber to the thesis statement. The grabber defines bullying then specifically cyberbullying; the thesis, however, spoke about cyberbullying in today’s society among teenagers. A sentence connecting Teenagers in today’s society to cyberbullying would have been useful before the thesis statement. The thesis statement is a single declarative sentence that states the topic
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. The power point presentation explains leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context.
