The Failure to Create Wholeness from Gnomon in The Dead
There is little doubt in anyone's mind that Gabriel's speech in "The Dead" is a failure. It is harder to understand what exactly he was trying to accomplish. The almost archaic style contradicts the lighthearted content, and what we are left with is a rambling oration which seems to produce nothing. Reading through the speech, one can not help but be struck by its
wondrously odd and seemingly antiquated phraseology:
[Let us] still cherish in our hearts the memory of those dead. . .whose
fame the world will not willingly let die.
[T]o go on bravely with our work among the living.
We are met here as friends. . . (202-203)
"Those dead," "work among the living," "we are met here as friends" - not exactly the tone which one would expect from an informal after-dinner speech in the midst of a party. The question is, "Where would one expect to hear this kind of speech?" The answer is simple: at a funeral, of course.
Not just any sort of funeral, however. One in particular comes to mind:
We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We are met to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. . . The world will little not nor long remember what we say her, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work.

In its sentiments and even in its diction it is astonishing how alike Gabriel's speech is to Licoln's Gettysburg Address. Now before you throw down this paper in disgust let me make it clear that I will not be suggesting that Joyce tried to transcribe The Gettysburg Address into Dubliners. I do think, however, that both speeches come from a certain tradition of speaking, the funeral oration or epitaphioi; and understanding how Gabriel's speech follows or strays from the tradition which it is
emulating helps in grasping the reasons behind and consequences of its failure.
Lincoln's funeral oration is the only English example of a specifically Athenian phenomenon. In classical Athens, it was customary for an elected official to give a speech at the funeral for those soldiers who lost their lives during the previous year.
Pericles’ Funeral Oration is a speech given by the Athenian leader Pericles, at a funeral, after the first battle of the Peloponnesian war. Pericles used this public funeral to make a statement and praise the Athenian people. “Our constitution does not copy the laws of neighboring states; we are rather a pattern to others than imitators ourselves”. Pericles believes Athens is original. They do not have to conform, they make the rules and other countries follow. “Its
“He had been ill a long time-in the mind” (65) was the way Baldwin remembered his father. It is because of his father’s illness, that his paranoia is aimed at the world. The contradiction here is that his father is a preacher. Trust and all other forms of hope in human kind have been vanquished from him. He despises the world he lives in, the one that held his ancestors in fields working for rich white gentry. He looks to God for answers and preaches an angry version of lord’s sermons. Baldwin was pulled in the same direction as his father except he couldn’t truly hold the meanings of the words after long and lost aspirations of preaching. “It was said in the church, quite truthfully, that I was ‘cooling off’” (80) in his interest to the service of preaching and gained it in a service of writing.
The memorial grew out of a need to heal the nation's wounds as America struggled to reconcile different moral and political points of view. In fact, the memorial was conceived and designed to make no political statement whatsoever about the war. The Memorial is a place where everyone, regardless of opinion, can come together and remember and honor those who served. By doing so, the memorial has paved the way towards reconciliation and healing, a process that continues today.
The funeral was supposed to be a family affair. She had not wanted to invite so many people, most of them strangers to her, to be there at the moment she said goodbye. Yet, she was not the only person who had a right to his last moments above the earth, it seemed. Everyone, from the family who knew nothing of the anguish he had suffered in his last years, to the colleagues who saw him every day but hadn’t actually seen him, to the long-lost friends and passing acquaintances who were surprised to find that he was married, let alone dead, wanted to have a last chance to gaze upon him in his open coffin and say goodbye.
From the short story “The Dead”, Gabriel the character shows us how his point of view of a certain thing is seen. His wife has passed away and his attitude in the story is well seen as neutral.
"There is one front and one battle where everyone in the United States—every man, woman, and child—is in action, and will be privileged to remain in action throughout this war. That front is right here at home, in our daily lives, and in our daily tasks."
The patriotism swelled in my already overfilled heart. It doesn’t matter that our country is faced with humongous issues, and that Washington is more divided than ever. What matters is those men and women who gave their lives for this country. Every man, woman, child, white, black, straight, gay, Republican, Democrat, rich or poor, should pay their respects to those who rest in eternal peace at Arlington National Cemetery.
Pericles’s funeral oration was given to honor the soldiers lost in war by commemorating the military accomplishments of the Athens government and to distinguish the roles of men and women in Athens society. Pericles’s speech was given in 430 B.C.E at the end of the first year of war. He then died a year late in 429 B.C.E. Pericles’ Funeral Oration is included in Thucydides’ writing titled History of the Peloponnesian War.

In both of their works, Thucydides and Sophocles write of a speech that instills a sense of ambition. In On Justice, Power and Human Nature, Pericles uses the oration not only to respect the departed, but to instill in the Athenians national pride and a zest to fight. The speeches that were given at funerals would primarily talk about the ancestors of the deceased and the lives they led. Pericles acknowledges this custom and proceeds to remind Athens what they are fighting for. He claims that the Athenian government is more of "an example to others, then they are to [Athens]," (Thucydides, ii.37) and that not only is there freedom and generosity between the government and the citizens, but also between one another as well. Pericles continues his eulogy by praising Athens' recreational activities, her soldiers' courage and loyalty, and her citizens' restraint against extravagance in what is beautiful (Thucydides, ii.37-40). Pericles praises do not cease until he finishes with his remarks of Athens being an education for Greece. He wants the citizens to remember the soldiers but forget about the tragedy that had occurred. These Greeks "ran away from the word shame," and Pericles urges the rest of the Athenian public body to do the same as well. In summation, Pericles' purpose of his speech was to convince the people to not be afraid of dying in battle and choose the most honorable course of action by fighting boldly.
