It’s Kind Of A Funny Story “It’s Kind Of A Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini, is a story about this boy named Craig and he has a best friend Aaron, who goes out with his dream girl Nia. They all got into the same special high school where overachieving students attend because they are very intelligent. Instead of Craig enjoying his acceptance into the new high school he just gets more depressed because he wants to be better than the average student but can not seem to get himself to do the work he is assigned anymore. He ends up getting fed up with not feeling alive and he plans to kill himself but does not necessarily go through with it. He checks himself into Aregon Hospital one night when it got really bad, he ended up going to a mental institute and meeting friends that eventually show him his problems are not that bad. Noel was a girl he met there and he fell in love with her. Craig got out of the hospital and lived a happy life with friends, family and Noel. Craig is a depressed teenager who takes medication to help him get better and it does end up working very well. It is hard for him to keep food down when he does have an appetite and his family is very supporting of him. Aaron is a bad influence on Craig because when he met him he started doing drugs and drinking at Aaron’s house parties. Craig gets very jealous of Aaron because he is so …show more content…
smart without studying, it just comes natural to him and Craig ends up hating some of himself for that. Nia is a petite girl who has depression problems also but not even near as bad as Craigs. She ends up dating Aaron, even though Craig is practically in love with her he would never say anything. Noel is a girl Craig meets in the Argen Hospital when he was in the mental institute. She was a very mysterious girl with a face full of scars that she never said was from. They met one night before Craig was leaving and they spent one night together. Bobby is a friend of his too in the hospital, they share personal things to each other. This book was a very interesting story and it relates to modern day social life now because depression is a big problem in a lot of teenagers lives and can stop them from living.
For example, depression stopped him from being able to eat, talk to people normally and do his homework. It made me realize that just because someone seems fine does not mean they are and you should always be nice to people no matter what. This is important because you just never know what other people have going on in their life. It definitely made me look at things differently now and is probably one of the better books that describes teenager
lives.
It makes you realize that regardless religion, social status, salary, race and other things we seem to care so much about, we can look past and develop meaningful relationships. I felt like this book told the story of being deaf from one person’s viewpoint, but also touched base on the general Deaf experience when talking about how the people around him would react. But, because Mark was born hearing, and was always “so close” to being hearing, all his teachers, doctors, and grandparents wanted him to be considered hearing and to be “normal”. If he had been born deaf, he would have been accepted as a deaf person instead of being treated as if he had some kind of disease. I believe that this book presents the Deaf community in a positive light because although he talks about how his deafness made him feel like an outcast and like he was broken which led to his low self-esteem, it’s a beautiful outcome showing a boy’s growth and how he learned to be proud and understand that there is nothing wrong with being different from other people. Being different does not make you less than, nor does it make you inadequate. I would definitely recommend this book because it shows that communication is everything, that human interaction is one of the most precious things, and that you should be proud of who you are and your culture, no matter
On one instance they met a farmer and his wife, and while the wife invited them to dinner, the husband was reluctant at first do to money being tight because there were no jobs. Josh then says, “Maybe we shouldn’t, Joey and I don’t want to take food you need.” The farmer immediately replies no and invites them to his house for dinner. Josh and Joey almost starved on many occasions and sometimes the only way to stay alive was to eat food out of the garbage cans. Josh never told Joey this is where some of the food came from because it pained him to think about it, and Josh always made Joey stay behind on these occasions, so he would not see him picking garbage cans in desperation. Sadly, what was humiliating was having to go door to door and have people watch as one begs for food in order to stay alive another day. Josh noticed that after only a few weeks how all he thought about was food, and this is another similarity between Josh and his father. All Josh’s father thought about was putting food on the table, and Josh never realized how it could consume one till he had to experience it himself. To wrap up, one can see how begging for food is demeaning and how it can leave one with emotional scars, but it also makes one thankful for the simple necessities in
He was able to see his race in a whole new way. Though he did not want to learn anything about his background he was convinced to go to the orphanage where it all began. The Nun who picked him up from the stoop the day his mother left him was still there. She said she remembered him even though he was skeptical about it he took in the information. Although he did complain the whole time and act spoiled he was happy at the end of the trip that he took that journey.
Feeling responsible for situations out of my control was difficult. My grades were awful, it was impossible to focus on anything. I could hardly sleep at night with the amounts of stress I was under. Knowing that my father was an alcoholic with bi-polar disorder opened me up to a new world. I was exposed to so much more than the average kid, especially when he would bring me to the Alcoholic Anonyms meetings. I met so many interesting people threw my father. My entire view of the world and its inhabitants has been altered. Growing up was very difficult but the experiences that I had has shaped the person I am today.
...inning to show more interest in music and dating. They also began to start deviating from what parents wanted and rebelling against them. The changes in school also left adolescents wondering what had happened to the easy schooling they had had. The end result was a new time and a new kind of people. The teenager was a new beginning.
Realizing that the chances of him getting a job had been extinguished, Josh fell into a spiral of regret, anguish, and lament, for he did not know what to do. Consequently, Josh and Joey resort to begging, for it was the only way to survive. Although Josh feels guilty for letting his little brother do all the work, he is grateful for the things that people give had compassion on them. Moreover, Josh knows that Joey could always do a better job of being desirous than he could. Ashamed, he asked a little girl for food, and she gave him food without hesitation, for she hated to see citizens suffer while she ate every night

Dystopian fiction has a great effect on teenagers because it causes us to look at the world differently. Anthem and The Hunger Games are great examples of what its like to live in a dystopian world and be a dystopian protagonist. I think teenagers can learn a lot through reading novels like this or watching the

In the short video, “The Story of Stuff”, the narrator, Annie Leonard, explains the story of material “stuff.” Annie examines how materials are produced and consumed by people, and how this process degrades the natural world and also can have health effects on humans. She first explains how natural resources are exploited by corporations. She also spends a minuets explaining how the government has lost power to huge corporations. Additionally, she notes how one-third of the earths resources have been consumed in the last three decades. She explains how degrading these resources is polluting the air, water, and hurting biodiversity. The next part of the linear system she describes is production of materials— factories. She argues that we are
1. My first impression of the story was the setting reminds me of a fall day in Michigan. It was dark and cool so it reminds me of my childhood in the mornings getting ready for school. At first I thought it was something like a family trip for the guys before the characters where describe. The thought of a young boy on a trip into manhood with his father and Uncle. As the story goes along my impression changes over time to its a story about life circle and the development of a young man 's understanding about life at the hands of his father.
Teenagers often feel depressed and sad because they do not have friends or they can not fit in so they start to establish new personality and a new looks so they can fit in. In Flower for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (1959) a 32 year old retarded man named Charlie Gordon undergoes a surgery to get smarter so that he can fit in his community and have a lot of friends. Unfortunately, the operation has side effects because nothing good lasts forever and a new Charlie gets reborn with a new personality. By looking at Charlie's personality as he gets smarter, he becomes more arrogant, selfish and he starts losing his friends.
“I didn’t want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that’s really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you’re so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare” (Vizzini 11). We all have our own day to day problems that bring on a whirlwind of stress. It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini illustrates various ways people deal with their problems. Craig draws brain maps, Noelle cuts herself, and Humble allows his health to deteriorate. Similarly, Craig allowed his mental health to deteriorate. The character I relate to the most would be Craig Gilner because, we both have depression, have only a few friends, and are hard on ourselves.
