It’s Kind of a Funny Story “I didn’t want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that’s really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you’re so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare” (Vizzini 11). We all have our own day to day problems that bring on a whirlwind of stress. It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini illustrates various ways people deal with their problems. Craig draws brain maps, Noelle cuts herself, and Humble allows his health to deteriorate. Similarly, Craig allowed his mental health to deteriorate. The character I relate to the most would be Craig Gilner because, we both have depression, have only a few friends, and are hard on ourselves. One similarity between Craig and myself would be that we both have depression. In the novel, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Craig displays multiple times his depression by nearly killing himself and having to be checked into a mental hospital. For example, in the beginning of the story, Craig said, “Its so hard to talk when you want to kill …show more content…
When you have depression, you tend to beat yourself up a lot more than the average person. Occasionally, I am too hard on myself and I end up crying or get really angry. As for Craig, he tends to make himself throw up to release his emotions. “What am I always going to do? I'm going to go home and freak out. I'm going to sit with my family and try not to talk about myself and what's wrong. I’m going to try and eat. Then I'm going to try and sleep. I dread it. I can't eat and I can't sleep. I'm not doing well in terms of being a functional human, you know?” (Vizzini …). It’s not very often where I just can’t eat, if anything it would be that I can’t sleep. Craig can’t do either, he stays up vomiting his dinner because he’s thinking too hard about it. And he can’t sleep because there are too many thoughts going on in his
Byron and Kenny have many similarities some are, How they are both very kind to there little sister Joey. In the ride to Alabama they took turns holding up her head, and every morning at school Byron takes off all of her jackets for her. They are both very ornery Kenny likes to torment and bother his brother as much as he can. Byron is ornery because he tries to lock the bathroom door and plays with matches and he
Perry was damaged more than Dick, but Dick was worse in the other aspects, dangerous and dauntless. In the book, “In Cold Blood” there is a lot of evidence to show how different these two men were. They were both damaged, dangerous, and dauntless. After hearing how these men can be characterized, it shows how their friendship could have been created. Opposites attracted? Or using one another for their own personal gain? Now, damage, where most of the problems can start. It can be easily explained for both men.
One similarity is that Dally and Johnny do not have very great homelives. For example, Dally parents do not seem to care for him. Dally does not live with his parents and stays anywhere he can. Dally was arrested at the age of ten, which shows that no one was looking for him. Dally says to Johnny, “‘Shoot, my old man don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck
This is due to the fact that you can be both manic and depressed, but not at the same time. Some key symptoms of mania are: sleeping very little but feeling extremely energized, grandiose beliefs about ones abilities, rapid talking, racing thoughts, increased goal oriented activity and inflated self esteem. In the documentary, Sam displayed all of the symptoms during his manic episodes. Some key symptoms of bipolar depression are: feeling worthlessness, sad or empty, thoughts of death or suicide, weight changes, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, irritability, retardation and agitation. Sam displayed most but not all of these symptoms. He was feeling worthlessness, had thoughts of suicide, and had changes in his weight. More specifically, he gained weight during his depressed episodes. The main DSM-5 symptoms of bipolar depression are: depressed mood most of the day or nearly everyday, diminished interest or pleasure, significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, thoughts of suicide and diminished ability to think or concentrate. The main character Sam showed significant signs of weight gain when he was in his depressed state. He also showed signs of feeling worthless. During a sit down with the filmmaker of the documentary, Sam was telling him that he felt empty and that he didn’t have pleasure or interest in much of anything. Sam later on in
Depression can be caused by many different things, and can also lead to someone having more problems. I have struggled with depression for quite a few years now, and there have been many different reasons that have caused it and that have made it worse. Having depression has lead me to do things in life that I am not overly proud of, one of which being self harm. While we were reading ‘Speak”, the further we got into the book I
“I was really sick for a while. It got to the point where I would get sick and throw up after everything I ate,” he said.
In Ana Castillo’s, So Far From God, the novel focuses on the character Sofi and her four daughters. Castillo narrates the women’s life situations all whilst portraying the negative effects of a male dominant society and the manipulation of women. Sofi is an independent single mother who has completely devoted herself to her daughters. She taught her daughters how to survive without a dominant male in their life, although throughout the novel they come into contact with several men who lead them into severe situations. The unjust deaths of her daughters led her to becoming a leader of her community. The third eldest, Fe, was a victim of an unjust work environment. The youngest, La Loca, was a victim of AIDS.
Vicious predator women, tempting songs, and wax in his men's ears. Odysseus and his men face many obstacles on their way home as well as the three men from “O Brother Where Art Thou.” Each of these sources also display similarities and differences.
The main reason why his writing is similar in the storyline topic is because he is inspired by many people from his family and close friends who have passed away or have gone through huge adversities. He has had many tragedies in life. He went through losing his mother, father, and sister to death, yet he has hope through the hard times, and he wants to give his readers that same hope. Most of the main themes of his writing includes family, friendship, love, pain, and tragedy. Most of his novels carry a glace of hope within it, even when there is much pain, suffering, and tragedy, he always shows a gleam of light to help his readers to get through their tragedies.
Depression is much more common than most people think. Because it is essentially an invisible illness and is largely in the mind, it is difficult to correctly diagnose it and most people suffer for months, years, or even decades with depression. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines depression as “a mood disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty with thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal thoughts or an attempt to commit suicide.” Most medical definitions are able to explain what happens and why it does, but after carefully examining this one, we only notice that it explains what happens, but not why. Usually, the symptoms of an illness are...
The scene where Jamal takes Forrester to the empty baseball field is a pivotal point in their relationship and the movie. After Forrester shares some extremely personal information, Jamal turns to him and says “the rest of those who have gone before us cannot steady the unrest of those that follow”, this being a direct quote from Forrester’s book. This quote, though he was unaware when he initially wrote it, has a lot of significance to his character. Jamal realizes this and reminds him of the words. It is here that Forrester and Jamal’s friendship solidifies and where the end of the movie is foretold.
The first trait we have in common is how he handled talking about the night he lost his limbs. As he told the story of that night, Miller ended it by telling a joke about how the watch he wore that night still worked and that his dad still wore it as a remembrance. Even during his whole presentation, BJ Miller seemed to be using humor to alleviate the seriousness of his talk. This is what makes Miller and I similar, whenever I am in an awkward or serious situation, I tend to use humor as a way to cut the tension and to feel more comfortable. Another similarity between BJ Miller and I is the joy and happiness he finds in the littlest things such as the snowball moment he had in the burn unit. I can relate to Miller because I have had days where I could barely get out of bed but finding those little things in life gave me hope that it would get better and if it doesn't I would be okay. Those trivial moments in our lives can give us hope and encouragement to live and that it would be okay no matter what. I think the biggest similarity Miller and I share is the fact that he used his experience to teach others. With my personality, I tend to want to always take care of others and help them in any way I can even if it was just telling them my experiences and how they can learn from it. I think that is what Miller is doing, he turned his accident
We also shared a few similarities, at least in the area of interests. Typically impulsive, Fred, upon learning that I rode a motorcycle more than a car, had gone out and bought a brand new one for himself. And I guess we were both builders, of a sort. He was down to the nagging little finishing detail...
The definition of depression is an illness that causes feelings of sadness and loss of interest that last for many days. In a study from 2014 the National Institute of Mental Health found that about 15.7 million us adults over the age of 18 suffered depression at least once in the past year. The study also showed that there were more women who suffered from depression than men. No one knows the exact cause of depression, but some possible causes are stressful events, childhood trauma, and biological changes. It appears that some depression is even hereditary. The symptoms of depression include a sad or depressed mood or a marked lack of interest and pleasure in almost all activities for most of the day, nearly every day for at least two weeks. Some other symptoms of depression include loss of appetite, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, lack of concentration, thoughts of death, often including suicidal thoughts, plans, or a suicide attempt, headaches, stomach aches, or pains anywhere in the body (Depression). Like many other Americans Jane Kenyon suffered from depression. In a letter I received from Kenyon’s husband he said “Jane did have a good psychiatrist who prescribed medicines and helped her. Mostly she was able to work. There were times when she could do nothing but lie in
