In my perspective, the leadership styles that both Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar demonstrated in the film was charismatic leadership style because they both had strong convictions and can inspire others toward a mutual purpose with their “magnetic charm”. For example, after Francois Pienaar team lost a match they were in the locker room drinking bad tasting beer. At that moment Francois used the beer as the “taste of defeat” symbol. For example, Mandela used compassion when he approached the sport association that wanted to get rid of the rugby team. He thought the best way to approach the issue was with compassion and sounding sincere to get his point across. Mandela explained how getting rid of the rugby team will only cause more racial divide and cooperation must occur to create change. Unfortunately, not everyone was on his side but it was a small milestone that later on turn around the negative view of the rugby team to positive and cause not only a world cup win but unity in South Africa. A successful leader is one who can inspire and motivate people towards a goal. Martin Luther King Jr. was an individual with a born gift to lead people. When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. A visionary leader is an individual who is able to desire things about the future that others may not see, but nonetheless, the immensity of such vision is amazing that it is able to be transmitted to society(Turner, 2013). According to Patrick Morley(2015), a visionary leader possesses the qualities of “vision, innovation, sacrifice, integrity, optimism, ability, impact, relation to others, excellence and servant to others.” All of those qualities, and many more, are those of the world humanitarian known as Nelson Mandela(1918-2013).
The exchange between the leader and his/her followers is the focal point of the theory. For Francois and his team, I think they are an example of the in-group. The in-group theory gives the followers more responsibility for a greater outcome. As the movie comes along, the leader, Francois, gives the team more responsibilities and expects them to work their hardest. A scene where Francois displays great leadership is during the finals against New Zealand. The Springboks are down in the half and Francois huddles the team together, giving a speech to motivate the boys.
