So, you think you really know about your friend? Well think again! Today’s interview with Leslie McFarlane proves differently. First, she is not as she appears to be and I have found that she is quite original and a unique person. Leslie was born on August 4, 2004; and her full name is Leslie Minerva McFarlane. She is currently in 7th grade and has a sister in 2nd grade. Leslie comes from a Latino family, but people may not know that she is also of Jamaican and German descent. As we discuss more about her wants and likes, Leslie would like to visit the Bahamas, because she loves to travel to the Caribbean. Her goals are to attend a good Catholic High School and excel into a good college. As I gathered more information about what Leslie likes
A class trip to Aruba should be an unforgettable experience, something that the students will never forget. However, for class of 2005 at Mountain Brook High School, it will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Natalee Ann Holloway was both blonde and beautiful. She was also very friendly and well known in her hometown. The class trip was supposed to be the best time of their life for some students, but it was also the end for another. May 29, 2005, seemed like an ordinary day of fun in the sun. “Holloway and a large group of students went to Carlos 'N Charlie's Nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba,” (Federal Bureau of Investigation). After Carlos 'N Charlie's closed around 1:00 A.M. some students headed back to the Holiday Inn where they were staying, and others gathered at various area bars (Federal Bureau of Investigation). While these bars seemed like a very ordinary and fun place to hangout, predators lurked there.
Raymond Carver's short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” leaves the reader feeling as if they have sat down at the table with a bottle of Gin and experienced first hand the effects of alcoholism and depression. In the original version of this story the “Beginners” Carver carefully crafts the many sides of an alcoholic personality developing strong knowable characters. The fundamental personalities are left fairly intact from the original version. It should be noted that the feelings that the reader are left with are due at least partially to the severe editing of the “Beginners” done by his editor and friend Gordon Lish. With this collaboration Carvers personal struggles still shine through but his intent of hope and recover from alcoholism were left mostly on the chopping block. Through many interviews and articles Raymond Carver make clear his personal struggles with alcoholism and how it has had an effect on his writing. INTERVIEWER: Where do your stories come from, then? I'm especially asking about the stories that have something to do with drinking. Carver: “At the very least it's referential. Stories long or short don't just come out of thin air.” (The Paris Review) The inner dialog and downward spiral of an alcoholic is experienced through the interaction between these personalities while discussing the topic of love. JA: I noticed recently you're using cliches in your characterizations, and I wonder if you're just observing, or recording the way a mind works. RC: It's there for a purpose; it's working for me, I think, not against me. Or at least I hope and assume this is the case!

It is only human to be biased. However, the problem begins when we allow our bigotry to manifest into an obstacle that hinders us from genuinely getting to know people. Long time diversity advocate, Verna Myers, in her 2014 Ted Talk, “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them” discusses the implicit biases we may obtain when it comes to race, specifically black men and women. Myers purpose is quite like the cliché phrase “Face your fears.” Her goal is to impress upon us that we all have biases (conscious or unconscious). We just have to be aware of them and face them head on, so that problems such as racism, can be resolved. Throughout the Ted Talk, Verna Myers utilizes an admonishing yet entertaining tone in order to grasp our attention
In her Ted Talk, “The game that can give you ten extra years of life” Jane McGonigal explains how she created a game called “Jane the Concussion Slayer” to help her overcome a concussion that didn’t heal properly. McGonigal describes to her audience the different levels and power-ups she created to cope with the process of her concussion since she had an unhealed concussion that left symptoms like headaches, nausea, vertigo, memory loss, and mental fog. In addition to this, McGonigal had to avoid everything that triggered her symptoms such as: writing, video games, work, emails, exercise, alcohol, etc. In doing so, she believed it helped her tackle challenges with more creativity, determination, and optimism. McGonigal then concludes her speech

This interview was conducted on Friday, November 25th, 2016 at my house. The total length of this interview was 65 minutes. The second family that I interviewed was the Lyles family. Both Bro. Scotty, the father, and Mrs. Yolanda, the mother, participated in the interview and three of their children were in the room. Bro. Scotty was born and raised in Alba, Texas on the very same tree farm that he owns and operates today; he is also a deacon at our church. However, Mrs. Yolanda was born and raised in Guatemala. As a child she was raised Catholic, and is part of a large and growing family. She is one of eight children. Their family as well as anybody else in that culture celebrated their daughter’s 15th birthday with a Quinceañera which marked the transition from childhood to young womanhood. This was traditionally the first time the girls would wear make-up, nice
A California native, having kindred spirits with Chicagoans, along with a hint of North Carolinian southern charm is what sets the foundation for who Abby Santos is. I, Abby Beatrice Santos, was born in Los Angeles, California from two Honduran natives who migrated to America in the 1980’s. The southern California lifestyle and the multicultural neighborhood I grew up in was my first exposure to diversity. The opportunity to attend Hyles-Anderson College for two years, located less than an hour away from Chicago granted me the ability to connect with different ethnic groups that I hadn’t been exposed to while living in the West Coast. The southern charm attained while living in North Carolina taught me to be more hospitable and enjoy the less fast paced activities in life. Having lived in the West Coast, Midwest and the South have all helped pave the way for my wide variety of interests. If I had to describe myself with a single adjective I’d choose, relatable.

Tuesdays with Morrie, written by Mitch Albom, is a story of the love between a man and his college professor, Morrie Schwartz. This true story captures the compassion and wisdom of a man who only knew good in his heart and lived his life to the fullest up until the very last breath of his happily fulfilled life. When Mitch learned of Morrie’s illness, the began the last class of Morrie’s life together and together tried to uncover “The Meaning of Life.” These meetings included discussions on everything from the world when you enter it to the world when you say goodbye. Morrie Schwartz was a man of great wisdom who loved and enjoyed to see and experience simplicity in life, something beyond life’s most challenging and unanswered mysteries. Morrie was a one of a kind teacher who taught Mitch about the most important thing anyone can ever learn: life. He taught Mitch about his culture, about trust, and perhaps most importantly, about how to live.
