A California native, having kindred spirits with Chicagoans, along with a hint of North Carolinian southern charm is what sets the foundation for who Abby Santos is. I, Abby Beatrice Santos, was born in Los Angeles, California from two Honduran natives who migrated to America in the 1980’s. The southern California lifestyle and the multicultural neighborhood I grew up in was my first exposure to diversity. The opportunity to attend Hyles-Anderson College for two years, located less than an hour away from Chicago granted me the ability to connect with different ethnic groups that I hadn’t been exposed to while living in the West Coast. The southern charm attained while living in North Carolina taught me to be more hospitable and enjoy the less fast paced activities in life. Having lived in the West Coast, Midwest and the South have all helped pave the way for my wide variety of interests. If I had to describe myself with a single adjective I’d choose, relatable. …show more content…
Religious, sports enthusiast, workaholic, environmentally conscious, classic automobile admirer, and fashionista are a few characteristics that define who I am.
I can go from shopping for fashion forward heels and clothes with my girlfriends at the mall to sparring for an hour with my predominantly male trainees at my Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym. My diverse interest in music from alternative rock to rap, reggae, Spanish music to country enables me to connect with different individuals. It is effortless for me to hold a conversation and relate to people from all walks of life because of my exposure and appreciation of different cultures. I believe my most relatable characteristic is having faced adversity and overcoming it. When I was 15 years of age my father had a massive brain injury that changed my family’s life
forever. Seeing my most influential role model in coma for two consecutive weeks and having to help teach my father how to do basic things like walk, talk and write again was physically, emotionally and spiritually difficult. Countless 14 hour drives every weekend from North Carolina to Rhode Island, where the incident occurred, took a toll on my studies, friendships and self-interests. This adversity while very painful to endure was a blessing in disguise. It brought my family and my relationship with God closer. I’ve been able to relate to others facing their own adversity that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to help if not for this incident. I use this adversity not as a crutch but as an enabler to help others overcome their own troubles. I believe the description of myself in the previous paragraphs is the main reason why I would like to transfer from Campbell University to Georgetown. It’s my passion for diversity and being able to relate to a multicultural group of people that motivates me to transfer. Georgetown University prides itself in encouraging the celebration, inclusion and respect for all cultural traditions and backgrounds. That mindset is what I want to implement in my life and use as a model to help others be more open to this mentality and there is nowhere else better than to learn first-hand as a Georgetown Hoya.
What sets me apart is being able to communicate/interact with diverse groups II consider myself as a very social person since I am involved in band, sports such as basketball and cross-country, and in many clubs II get
The statement by Carson Kressley, “It 's really important to share the idea that being different might feel like a problem at the time, but ultimately diversity is a strength”, describes that being different is often difficult but it is not something to be ashamed of. Authors use the idea of being different to write compelling essays that drive readers to think about real issues within one’s self or in society. In the two essays, “Fish Cheeks” written by Amy Tan, and “Champion of the World” written by Maya Angelou, the authors describe their experience of being different than everyone else and how they try to handle the difficulties that come along with being a minority. Amy Tan is a daughter of two Chinese immigrants who grew up in Oakland,

Her eyes were heavy, her body weak. As she crawled into the bathroom two feet away, Abby felt her body slowly succumbing to the numbness. All of her pain would be gone in less than 10 minutes, so why would she want to turn back? What about the senior trip Abby had planned with her best friend? What about the chair at the dinner table that would now be vacant? A couple of hours later Abby’s family came home from her little sister’s soccer game. Little did they know what they would find as they approached the top of the stairs. Her little sister, Ali, stood still as she looked down at her feet. There on the cold floor lay her big sister, her role model, and her super hero. Ali was crushed when she saw the pill bottle in her hand and the pale color of her skin. Her mom fell to her knees screaming and crying, wondering where she
So, you think you really know about your friend? Well think again! Today’s interview with Leslie McFarlane proves differently. First, she is not as she appears to be and I have found that she is quite original and a unique person. Leslie was born on August 4, 2004; and her full name is Leslie Minerva McFarlane. She is currently in 7th grade and has a sister in 2nd grade. Leslie comes from a Latino family, but people may not know that she is also of Jamaican and German descent. As we discuss more about her wants and likes, Leslie would like to visit the Bahamas, because she loves to travel to the Caribbean. Her goals are to attend a good Catholic High School and excel into a good college. As I gathered more information about what Leslie likes
Sylvia Rivera was born on July 2nd, 1951 in Bronx, New York to a Venezuelan woman and a Puerto Rican father. Days after she was born her father disappeared, leaving her just with her mom. At the age three her stepfather threatened to kill her, her half sister and mother, shortly afterwards her mother committed suicide. Leaving her and sister with their grandmother, but Rivera’s grandmother had little love for her effeminate grandson. After her half-sister was taken by her birth father Rivera’s Grandmother resented her even more, due to her mixed race-darker skin- and behavior. She would often received beating from her. Rivera’s experience in school was no better than at home. She was mocked for wearing make up by her peers and dropped out of school in sixth grade due to being called by a slur
As an imperfect human being just as the rest of humanity, I am composed of many characteristics, most of which will go undiscovered by the majority of my peers and by myself. Different people will see different segments of me, because individuals bring out different parts of who I actually am. Only my closest family and friends are able to see the true, complete “Bonnie”. The “blithe Bonnie” is only one part of who I am. Other sides of me can be responsible, mature, loud, blunt, juvenile, diligent and intelligent. The responsible, mature,
When I think of who I am as a person, certain words come to mind. Words like open-minded, detail-oriented, and easy-going. I pay extra close attention to things that need to be organized and I believe strongly in prioritizing. I seem to have an inability to procrastinate which makes people who don’t know me see me as “obsessive” or a “neat freak”. I enjoy being social and extroverted because being in social situations and being outgoing brings me joy. I identify as a caring, creative, and artsy person who likes to express her thoughts and feelings and has no problem being straightforward and honest almost all of the
These past few days, I learned a lot about myself. One of the things I learned about myself is that I am a, Auditory learner. I didn’t agree at at first and after I read it, I said to myself that ‘’That is totally me’’.It said that as a, auditory learner is a person who listens to ideas and loves to tell jokes and I often like to talk to myself. I have trouble writing, and that was one of my goals for this year to become a better writer. I don’t really read body language because I like to express myself a lot and that is what makes me a better learner in my own way. I am very social, I always come to school with something on my mind that I need to do or fix and I have problems of my own. I guess that’s not very personal because everyone
Considerate, dependable, easy going, opened minded, and flexibility are all traits that describe me. Being considerate and dependable is something that I do throughout my everyday life, with my job, family, friends, and coworkers. In my job, my employer can depend on me to get the job done. My children can depend on me to take care of them and to supply for their every need. Being considerate of others feelings is something that I constantly think about and do. No matter if I am driving or walking I am always looking out for others and watching my actions. It is important to me to make sure that I am considerate of those around me and willing to help people. We are all in this world with the same mission in life and there is no reason why we would have to be rude towards others. Open minded is something that
I know a fellow classmate who is almost equally Orange and Green, like me, but when we took the Strengths Quest Assessment, we didn’t share a single Top 5 trait! How can this be? Although I found True Colors accurate, I found Strengths Quest much more accurate. My top five themes from most to least are “Includer”, “Communication”, “Positivity”, “Woo”, and “Activator”. The overall description is the same, but I like how this one focuses on what makes us stand out. As an “Includer” I stand out because I can find something good in each person I meet, which makes me a very likeable person. I will befriend just about anyone who is in my life. Seems very “orange” to me. As a Communications major, I was glad to see Communication as my second trait. As a “Communicator” I am very loquacious or fond of talking, so fond that I am comfortable telling personal stories describing my experiences. Communications is very much a descriptor of both orange and green in the True Colors assessment. My third descriptor was positivity. This is absolutely an orange trait, and even a little blue. I am optimistic, and will have fun whether I win or lose a contest. I often keep my distance from “Debbie Downers”, or “Negative Nancys”, (or the male versions), and although I open myself to a wide range of people, I try to be around more optimistic people. Woo! I thought that was a hilarious abbreviation for my next descriptor. WOO means to Win Others Over. I want people to like me. I am very sociable, friendly, and interested in people. I can easily go from group to group, and people appreciate my unreserved, gregarious, and friendly nature. This is very “blue” and “orange”
Ryan Torresin grew up in the cold, and to my surprise diverse, city of Toronto. He told me how the town he lived in was populated with a wide range of races (blacks, whites, Asians), languages (French, English) and religions (Christian, Catholic, Je...
My personal type is ISFJ-A according to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). In this test’s result, my strengths are kind-hearted, hard-working, devoted, and I have the practical sense. I value harmony and cooperation. I do not agree a nuisance and an objective manner. I am very sensitive what other people feel or hope. I am also aware of my internal emotion. I do not express my feeling usually, I keep my head cool. I make an effort to accomplish various missions for work. I have a strong sense of responsibility. I am a highly organized person, so I do not like to delay the due date. I love to care for others who need me. On the other hand, my weaknesses are shy, altruistic, and reluctant to change. I do not like to express my true feeling,
This experience allowed me to work in a helping capacity serving people from various ethnic backgrounds, religions, cultures, age groups, gender, social class, and sexual orientation. Through this experience I gained a profound level of respect for multiculturalism, and learned firsthand the importance of cultural competence. Over the years, my work experience included working in nursing homes, home healthcare, hospitals, and mental health and substance abuse facilities. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, my job duties involved providing medical assistance and support to clients who were incapable of helping themselves. This experience allowed me to recognize my personal strengths and as well limitations. My strengths include: focused driven, excellent communicator, leader, compassionate, honest, and respectful. However, I found my weakness to be accepting the things that I cannot control, for example,
characteristics about myself and why I behave the way that I do in regards to my personal and
