A class trip to Aruba should be an unforgettable experience, something that the students will never forget. However, for class of 2005 at Mountain Brook High School, it will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Natalee Ann Holloway was both blonde and beautiful. She was also very friendly and well known in her hometown. The class trip was supposed to be the best time of their life for some students, but it was also the end for another. May 29, 2005, seemed like an ordinary day of fun in the sun. “Holloway and a large group of students went to Carlos 'N Charlie's Nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba,” (Federal Bureau of Investigation). After Carlos 'N Charlie's closed around 1:00 A.M. some students headed back to the Holiday Inn where they were staying, and others gathered at various area bars (Federal Bureau of Investigation). While these bars seemed like a very ordinary and fun place to hangout, predators lurked there.
Holloway was last seen around 1:30 A.M. leaving the local bar in a silver Honda with three young males named Joran van der Sloot, Deepak Kalpoe, and Satish Kalpoe,” (Federal Bureau of Investigation). Not a soul knows what happened during the early morning after Holloway left the bar. However, Joran van der Sloot is the prime suspect for this case. Van der Sloot is person who Holloway was seen last with. Evidence points to him and even witnesses believe he is the murderer. It is believed that he gained her trust and killed her because she wouldn’t offer him what he initially wanted, which was sexual intercourse. This murder occurred out of spite, and hatred.
From an outside prospective, the relationship between Holloway and Van der Sloot looked like any other friendship. Holloway was attracted to his charm, as well...

Justice was not served in the controversial nature of the Bernhard Goetz subway shooting trial. After shooting four black teenagers, Bernhard Goetz turned himself into the police in Concord, New Hampshire. He was denominated, “The Subway Vigilante”. This case was brought to court approximately two years later, where Bernhard Goetz would ultimately be voted guilty of one count of illegal firearms possession, and served just six months in jail. Following the trials, questions are still being asked if justice has been served.
Many young criminals are less likely to become career criminals if punished through public embarrassment than through prison. Prison can be a sign of manliness or a “status symbol” (Jacoby 197). He says “prison is a graduate school for criminals”, providing evidence that criminals want to be convicted and be in prison, to strengthen their status (Jacoby 197). Jacoby knows how to properly get his view across to the reader, by saying that prison is not as effective now, as it used to be.... ... middle of paper ...
Jacoby can be easily perceived as an upset and alarmed individual who blames the rise of criminal activity in the United States on the failure of the criminal justice system. He cares about people and believes that the safety of individuals is decreasing because criminals are not punished effectively by imprisonment and that some even receive a “sign of manhood” from going to prison (197). Additionally, he is upset that the ineffective system is so expensive. His concern for his audience’s safety and his carefully argued grounds, which he uses to support his claim, create a persona of an intelligent person of

This essay will explore some of the theories commonly observed in criminology in relation to the 2005 hit movie Batman Begins. I chose a batman movie as they’re usually about lucrative criminals and batman himself is a notable criminologist. Batman and his “rogue gallery” as they are often called, also “super criminals” display similar behavior to what we see in the real worlds normal criminals.

News coverage portrayed the offenders as good boys with promising futures that had now been tarnished by these allegations. The school was also rumoured to have taken part in a cover up of evidence to protect the offenders. This became national news in the US when the New York Times ran an extensive piece on the offenders in this case and only talked about the affect on the victim in the last few paragraphs, Anonymous, the hacker group got involved after this and leaked all the information about the offenders and the cover up that took place making the case international news.
