The author’s purpose in writing this article is because they want to convince us that sociolinguistics is an important field of study if we wish to understand how and why code-switching works. The authors focus on the various ways intersectional and intra-sectional code-switching in Gapun is interacting with the overall language shift. More specifically, the purpose of the article is to focus on how the Tok Pisin and Taiap languages are used by the villagers in normal day-to-day conversations. Finally, the authors hope to find ways in which the mixing of the village vernacular and Tok Pisin are contributing to the interaction of the language shift in Gapun.

In particular, Kulick and Stroud’s research shows similarities in that even in a city with a large population of speakers speaking Tok Pisin, the speakers are still experiencing a language shift. Both articles also suggest that through the process of language shift, the vernacular could result in language endangerment. However, Kulick and Stroud’s article emphasize how code-switching interacts with language shift, rather than how code-switching interacts with language death and endangerment.
Through reading this article, it has helped me understand the concept of language shift. In particular, this article has helped me to understand that as people code-switch, they instantly uphold that certain language as it becomes part of their repertoire and they become familiar with it. Everyone has various styles of speaking and various ranges of vocabulary that they utilize depending upon with whom they speak. This concept, known as code switching, portrays an integral part of our lives in today’s society. The fact that different groups of people speak in different ways necessitates the use of code switching. One would not speak to a group of high school students in the manner that one would speak to a scholar, or speak to a prison inmate in the same regard that one would speak with the President of the United States. Speaking in standard American English and then in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), or Ebonics, portrays the most prominent use of code switching in today’s society, especially among American youths. ‘Mother Tongue’ a story by Amy Tan tries to take us through the different events one should change the manner in which he or she uses language with the listeners. As the speaker, one should use the appropriate language for the right audience so as to avoid circumstances in which language barrier can occur. The language which Tan uses with her mother is quite different from the one she uses with her listeners when engaging in public or official talks.
