For my journal entry this week, I will continue to explore my feelings towards the situation that happen last week with my client. After her sister mentioned her parent, my client ran crying to her room. This week, I meet with this client again, the only difference was that I was alone. I thought it was best for me to address what had happened. I told the client that I want her to feel comfortable to the team. This would mean for trigger topics like her parents, to come up in a way that she is comfortable. I told her that we would not talk about that topic until she is ready to talk about it. While when I started talking about it, the client was very quiet. It was almost as if she was about to cry, however she did not. Instead she said that
she agreed and stated that she would very much like that. I though addressing it as soon as I got there would have made for a better session, which turned out to be a great one.
The title of chapter one is called Introduction to Interpersonal communication. This chapter is mainly talking about interpersonal communication among materials that are very important to us such as interpersonal communication to our life, interpersonal communication and social media and interpersonal communication principles. They are many more that was talked about in the chapter put those three were the main thing that stood out to me. After confirming that her mother paid more attention to her sister and stepfather, she mentioned that during this time she began to cut herself in places that no one would notice. The pain did not take the feeling away, but she wanted to know that if she could still feel pain after the thought of losing everything. However, the only person who paid her any attention during this time, was her grandmother. Her grandmother showed her the love that her mother nor “father figure” never showed her. But I had realized that I do not have to have all the answers and I am not here to give solution to the client. Instead, I am here to assistant the client in finding solution to their problems that would work for them. I would always keep in mind that I have to be an active listener and listen to my client with non-judgmental. Furthermore, I also believe that it’s important for me to learn how to balance information that requires more attention, as well as the information that allows me to see what the issue is, and how might I be able to better assist my client. With that being said, after I was able to process through what was happening for me when I heard my client talk about her abuse? Meaning for me I made sense of this, by trying to take care of her and not make her relive the abuse. By me doing this I have realize that I have done my client harm, by not attending to her needs to express her abuse. The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.

Learning diverse aspects of interpersonal communication has greatly aided me in better understanding of what it consists. Do speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have speech, language, and voice disorders, or any other problems related to their profession? Do they stutter? I am a future speech-language pathologist. I have met several SLPs who stutter and those who have foreign accents. However, they are successful SLPs. In order to work with the clients who stutter and have successful results of the speech-language treatments, it is very important for SLPs to be aware of their own present communication challenges that can be related to multilingualism, code-switching, or the events that lead to fluency breakdown.
