Communication and technology are very important factors in all careers. “Communication skills are critical for an accountant’s workplace success; however accounting education research to date has mainly focused on the writing and presentation skills aspects of communication skills.” (Daff, L.2013) The accounting profession is just one setting that communication plays a key role in the workplace, but it is very vital in all careers and professions today. With communication playing such a key factor in being successful in the workforce, everyone needs to have the communication skills to be able to be efficient and effective. “Results of two studies show that oral communication is the most important competency for college graduates entering the workforce,

and that the oral skills most important for entry level graduates are: following instructions, listening, conversing, and giving feedback.” (Maes, J. D., Weldy, T. G., & Icenogle, M. L. 1997) Communication is vital in all areas of the workforce from customer service, retail management, or even pilots of large commercial airplanes. Technology continues to advance and becomes more important in everyday life. Most jobs couldn’t function in today’s society without technology, but the use of technology diminishes the face to face contact which also leads to the absence of trust in the workplace. “Employee age moderates the relationships between attitude towards technology and intrinsic work motivation, extrinsic work motivation, and overall job satisfaction.” (Eliasa, S. M., Smith, W. L. & Barneya, C. E., 2012, p.453) The advances in technology have led to more involvement in social media and less involvement in face to face conversations. Social media has effected many businesses majorly because of the major benefit for their advertising. Social media and technology allows businesses to become more effective and efficient. Conversations are such a stepping stone for the success of a company, but with the rise of technology it has made it harder on the company. Gaining trust in the workplace is very crucial in order for the company to become successful. Developing trust early on in the relationship with customers and employees can help preserve the use of technology and trust in the workplace. “The development of trust is closely connected with the development of relationships.” (Short, H., 2014, p.1017) Trust is a very important factor in the work environment, but developing relationships in the workforce is just as important if not more. Gaining trust in the work environment is such a key role in the success of a company, but it is also important in developing communication within the work environment. Age has been linked to motivation and overall job satisfaction along with the acceptance of technology in the workplace. Some think that technology has had a negative impact on the younger generations’ and their ability to learn. I think there is pros and cons to every situation. For instance, this situation I believe that it has helped but also hurt the younger generations’ and their ability to learn and their motivation. With the internet right at our fingertips, some can be lazier because they do not have to work hard to find the information they need. That is not everyone who takes advantage of the internet our fingertips. Some use technology as an additional aid in their work. Having the internet at our fingertips can also lead to a lack of communication. Most of the younger generations’ are obsessed with social media and their phones. They do not communicate in person with most people they talk to. Instead, they use instant message type social media sites to communicate with friends and classmates instead of face to face conversation. This will in turn lead to poor communication skills when that generation is in college and in the workforce. With businesses leaning more toward technology and social media, the younger generations’ will have a leg up in that area when applying for jobs, but they may not be as efficient with face to face communication. This could end up hurting the business’s customer support reputation. With social media and technology becoming such a reliable part of society today, businesses are starting to rely solely on technology to perform everyday tasks. “The internet is an almost indispensable part of business, allowing for more efficient forms of communication, unprecedented access to information, and greater flexibility in work hours and locations.” (Hearing, G. A. & Ussery, B. C, 2012, p.35) With the help of technology, businesses are able to become more environmentally friendly by going paperless with all of the business related software available to the business world today (dropbox, google drive, carbonite). More people are able to work from home or remote locations with the help of technology. With the remote locations, communication is even more important because the coworkers are working in different states or countries, but it is possible with the advancements in technology. Overall technology and communication are two of the most important factors in today’s work environments. Technology and communication are important separately, but even more important together. Technology helps businesses become more efficient in everyday tasks and overall more successful. Developing trust in the workplace is one of the first responsibilities any business should take care of. The age of the employee should be a factor taken into consideration when hiring is occurring. The age of the prospective employee should be thought about in accordance to the type of work the company is taking care of. These factors aid in the use of technology and communication in the workplace today which are two of the most important factors. References: Daff, L.

The title of chapter one is called Introduction to Interpersonal communication. This chapter is mainly talking about interpersonal communication among materials that are very important to us such as interpersonal communication to our life, interpersonal communication and social media and interpersonal communication principles. They are many more that was talked about in the chapter put those three were the main thing that stood out to me. In this discussion paper, I am going to talk about the things that grab my attention while looking over my notes and by looking over my chapter. Those materials are the interpersonal communication to our life, interpersonal communication and social media and interpersonal communication competence.
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
Interpersonal communication is communication that occurs between two people within the context of their relationship and as that evolves, helps them to define their relationship (p.22). With interpersonal communication as a backbone for meeting our daily needs, whether we communicate verbally or non-verbally when we are in the presences of others then communication is taking place. The elements of interpersonal communication are broken down into the communicators, the message, noise, feedback, context, and channel (p.9). The models such as interaction and transactional show that interpersonal communication works as a two-way street between the sender and receiver. When both the sender and receiver are receiving messages and feedback that defines a relationship where both needs are being met. Floyd discusses that interpersonal communication many aspects of our lives, from our physical needs and other every day needs to our experiences with relationships, spirituality, and identity (p.4). When we overcome the challenges with communication we can meet our needs and build relationships. To meet our needs, we must be willing to
There are all different types of communication that people will use through out their life. The most important type of communication is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication differs from other forms of communication in that there are few participants involved, the participants are in close proximity to each other, there are many sensory channels used, and feedback is immediate. Interpersonal communication is the information received from listening to what someone else is saying. Interpersonal communication always uses intonation, diction and enunciation to give meaning to information. Intonation, diction and enunciation sometimes give more meaning to what is being said than the actual words themselves. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to the reader the importance of interpersonal communication in business.
Introduction: Attention -Getter: Although, Sydney J Harris once said that two words information and communication are often used interchangeably since ,they signify various meanings. Information means giving out while ,communication means getting through. Main Idea: There are three essential keys in public speaking that can benefit my career as an Administrative Assistant. These skills are effective communication, connecting with consumers and employee’s and also meeting consumers and employee’s needs.
Oral and Written Communication skills are two of the most important skills a person could have in the workplace. Without the ability to effectively communicate or understand communication in written or auditory form taking and giving direction would be extremely difficult. Oral communication is simply the act of talking and listening. If a person can effectively convey his thoughts in spoken word and interpret others spoken words into their intended thought then they can effectively communicate orally. The same concept can be applied to the written word. The U.S. Deptartment of Labor breaks oral communication into two areas:
1. What are the three purposes for which people communicate? What percentage of a manager’s time is spent communicating? Give examples of the types of communication managers use.
...thletic director “will also have to make explanations, educate, do public speaking, and inform others via the written form”. (Hoch, 2007) To emphasize the importance of written communication in a paper by Griffin and Kaleba college graduates were ranked as being below par in written communication by more than a quarter of employers. (Griffin & Kaleba, 2006). To give a specific example Bank of America seeks employees who have both written and spoken skills in communication. (Wilson, 2006)
Effective business communication is central to the success of an individual’s career and consequently to that of the overall business entity. It would be imaginable therefore that there is some form of correlation between effective communication skills and such success. To put this into context, University of Kent (2011) has placed Verbal Communication at the top of the ten skills that employers most commonly look for. On the same note, anything that hinders effective communication is bound to have a negative effect not only on the specific message delivery, but also on the overall success of a career. In this paper, some of the barriers to effective business communication are discussed, with a few examples of how they affect the process.
The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.
Interpersonal communication is one of the significant skills while communicating with other individuals. It normally covers an extensive area and includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Body language and facial expression may affect the accurateness of the message transmission directly. Interpersonal communication skills normally ensure that the message is sent and received correctly without any alteration thus improving the communication efficiency. Learning diverse aspects of interpersonal communication has greatly aided me in better understanding of what it consists. I am capable of applying the knowledge gained from this course to my personal experiences. This paper reflects on my personal experience in learning interpersonal communication.
Interpersonal communication is very important in everyday life. It helps us build a relationship with another, also it helps us to satisfy our physical needs, identity needs, social needs and practical goals. Communication lets people exchange their feeling and information through verbal and non-verbal communication through social media or face to face communication. Communication can be effective and ineffective depend on the individual communication skills. The ways we communicate with another can be influenced by family, friends, significant other also within the culture and region where we stay. Each person has a different set of rule to communicate with another, so this is how miscommunication happen. There are some expectation and way
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Do potential employers really care about an applicant’s communication skills? How will I use communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
As you begin looking at numerous employment announcements and will observe one qualification that all employers seem to value. Astounding correspondence is a component of the capabilities that businesses anticipate. Throughout this presentation we will examine why employers prize sound written and verbal communication skills. Additionally, will we examine why employer’s impression of today’s workforce is not properly equipped with writing or listening skills.
“DA-DA!” Who would have known that a simple word like that could be so powerful and strong enough to make a grown man like myself cry. In every job setting, a great way to represent ourselves is through communication. Communication is stemmed from the act of speech, in which plays a huge role, not only at a workplace but in reality as well. Speech is simply a higher form of communication between two or more people. Great speech practices may enhance a person’s opportunity of moving up within the company he or she works for, as well as venturing off to higher positions in a professional field. Having the ability to speak well is closely related to the ability to listen well. Speaking well in a professional setting can cause one to stand out over others more and help interpret a great first impression of who that person is.
