Developmental disability, better known as intellectual disability, or mental retardation is a disorder that causes individuals to preform at below average levels (“Intellectual”). This disorder is characterized by continued infant-like behavior, decreased learning ability, failure to meet the markers of intellectual development, inability to meet educational demands, and a lack of curiosity (“Intellectual”). Some people with intellectual disabilities are able to live normal lives, while others may require assistance. Most people with intellectual disabilities have the same capacity to preform the same task as those without intellectual disabilities. Twice a year disabled athletes from all around the world gather to participate in the Special Olympics. In the 1950’s and early 1960’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver was concerned when she noticed that people with intellectual disabilities didn’t have a place to play, she had to take action (“History Special”). She began holding a summer day camp for special needs people in her backyard, the goal was to learn what children with disabilities were capable of doing (“History Special”). After an abundance of tedious work, on July 19th and July 20th of 1968 the first international Special Olympics took place at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois (“History Special”). A thousand people with intellectual disabilities from the United States and Canada competed in track, field and swimming (“History Special”). Almost ten years later the first ever International Special Olympics Winter Games was hosted in Steamboat Springs, Colorado (“History Special”). The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. The two movies I choose to compare and contrast are I Am Sam and Radio. In both of these movies the main characters expressed signs of being exceptional learners. In I Am Sam, Sam Dawson, is the main character that shows autistic tendencies accompanied by intellectual disabilities. “The most common syndromes associated with intellectual disability are autism, Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).” (berns peter, 2016). Special Olympics is an association that allows the disabled to be active by participating and competing in the sport events. In the 1950s through the 1960s, Eunice Kennedy Shriver realized the difference in the way people acted toward the special needs population and the difference in the way people acted toward others. She began to think about the disadvantages of the disabled and their ability to do activities. She knew they were capable of doing some activities, but no one tried to achieve a difference in the way the special needs were treated. Shriver hated the fact that the disabled were ignored because people didn’t believe the special needs people were the same as others (Meyer).
The National Institute of Neurologic Disorders defines learning disorders as a; condition that either prevents or significantly hinders somebody from learning basic skills or information at the same rate as most people of the same age. It is important to note that this does not mean that the individual has less intelligence; it means that their brain or body is wired in a way that hinders or prevents development of a certain tasks. Many people often confuse learning disabilities with mental retardation but while both words describe similar conditions, the term learning disability and learning disorder are used to describe conditions that affect development in certain cognitive areas in otherwise healthy developed individuals. Millions of people are affected in differing severity throughout the world with specific neurologic based learning impairments.
Abstract: The Special Olympics not only give special athletes athletic skills, they offer more opportunity, encouragement, and dexterity to survive in society than the public school system alone. To understand the differences and similarities between handicapped athletes and their non-handicap peers is the first step in creating a program that best meets the child's needs. There were no community programs that catered to the mentally and physically challenged, so Eunice Kennedy-Shriver created "special games" in her back yard for her handicapped child. Shriver established the Special Olympics in 1968. Today there are more than one million special athletes competing in 140 countries. There are some problems with relying on the public school system to seek a child's full potential in the special education programs. The Special Olympics, however, have found an effective method of preparing children, teens, and adults for society through sport. The diverse selection of sports, their rules, and physical demands, is an advantage when there is a huge range of disabilities. There is a program offered for almost everyone. People who benefit from these games range from the athletes themselves, the officials, coaches, caregivers, parents, to the spectators and on-site first aid staff. Mrs. Kennedy-Shriver said this in regard to special athletes, "through sports, they can realize their potential for growth." Over and over this fantastic organization has demonstrated integrity, good sportsmanship, and goal oriented programs that work!
Considering I have had the opportunity to meet and develop personal relationships with intellectually disabled individuals, I do not appreciate these words being associated with terms such as “dumb” or “ignorant.” Just like I do not appreciate, and take offense to the word “blonde” being paralleled with the words “dumb” or “ignorant.” During my high school career, I volunteered all four years with the Special Olympic events. The Special Olympic Games provide an opportunity of various games in competitive sports in the elementary, middle, and high school special education levels. The kids run the bases in baseball, score game-winning baskets in basketball, and break through the finish-line with arms and smiles as wide as they can be during the relay races. Seeing their smiles from ear-to-ear when they would receive their medals and sharing the excitement with the children is something that I will always treasure. As common as learning disabilities may be, not every child in America is affected, however, the number may be larger than one thinks. In 2001, over 2.9 million children were diagnosed with a learning disability. The number is not accurate since some definitions of a learning disability are different than others. (NCLD 2001) Some of the most common are dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Typically one who suffers from a learning disability has difficulty in writing, reading, speaking, listening, and mathematics (NCLD 2001).
