The Amity leaders decide that the group can’t stay for a long time. The Erudite arrive and search the Amity buildings for Tris and her group. However, Tris and her group manage to escape by running into a field. They ride a train and they come across a group of factionless, who take them to their secret headquarters. There, they see that the factionless are more organized than Tris first thought and that Tobias' mother, Evelyn, is their leader, who Tris thought was dead. Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. As a result of this sudden change, Tris misses her caring family. However, Tris doesn’t mourn and drown in self-pity. Instead,

The United States launched an operation known as Operation Desert Shield, also known as the Persian Gulf War, in August of 1990 in response to Saddam Hussein’s order to the Iraqi forces to take over Kuwait. President George Herbert Walker Bush made the decision to send American troops to Saudi Arabia to form an international coalition that would eventually turn into an operation known as Operation Desert Storm. The United States Army had not witnessed an event of such international and Homefront importation since the Cold War.
Divergent was officially released in October 2013- as well as the other books. The plot is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice in which the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago- where Veronica currently lives- that is separated into 5 groups called factions ( Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless). Tris is Abnegation-born but takes an aptitude test where she chooses to become Dauntless. Because she is Divergent (consisting of Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite), she must keep it a secret from her Dauntless leaders to protect herself from being hunted down...to her death. Between the pages, she begins to explore her true identity within a society that defines its citizens by social and personality. It also contains a romantic subplot between herself and
This is a historical examination of the first battle fought for Fallujah, Iraq: Operation Vigilant Resolve. We will examine the history, location, composition, and social background of Fallujah. Analysis of Operation Vigilant Resolve will identify participating units, basic strategy, why Vigilant Resolve failed and lessons learned. Most scholars agree that future battlefields will be urbanized; with lessons learned from this operation we will be better suited for similar, future conflicts.
Veronica Roth's dystopian book, “Divergent” takes place in Chicago. In Divergent there are 5 factions. Each human has to go through an aptitude test to see which faction they are most like. The main character Tris has many difficult choices to make in this book. One lesson the author teaches is choices can change your whole life.
Each faction’s places value solely on a specific virtue, which members work their entire life to perfect. Roth make the story more relevant to modern readers by including aspects of our own society in the Divergent universe. In an interview with Roth, Good reader member Becky Webster ask, “when you were 16 what faction would you have chosen and would that decision be the same today?” Roth replied, “When I was 16, I would have chosen Candor. I found it difficult to trust people when I was younger for various reasons, and I think have seen Candor as a place in which it is safe to trust, because everybody is so transparent. Today, I would have chosen Dauntless. I struggle with fear daily and sometimes it makes me feel trapped. I think bravery makes you selfless and
The novel starts out with Tris and her brother Caleb preparing for their aptitude tests. This test shows them (or at least is supposed to show them) which faction they belong in or where they fit in. Tris’s results come back inconclusive, therefore she is divergent, and her results are manually recorded as Abnegation. Divergent, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary can be defined as “differing from each other or from a standard.” In the novel, when someone is “divergent” they fit into multiple of the five factions. They do not conform to only one of the five standards. This forcing of choice causes them to conform to the patterns of a specific lifestyle even when if it means not being completely true to whom they are. Specifically in Tris’s case, she fit into Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), and Abnegation (the selfless). By choosing Dauntless she had to suppress her intelligence and ignore the intuition to help others, which in the end proved to be a difficult task.
As a result of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2nd 1990, Operation Desert shield was implemented by the United States on August 7th. Trying to deter Iraq from advancing farther into the country the U.S. began staging troops, equipment and other supplies needed to sustain a military in war time. Moving resources by air and sea the American armed forces presence was made known in the region with resources being staged in the allied countries of Saudi Arabia These later we mobilized initiating operation Desert Storm on January 17th 1991 at 3am Arabia Time when the first tanks rolled across the Saudi border, this conflict would continue until the official cease fire would take effect on April 11th of the same year (Operation). During the 10 month time span of the Persian Gulf War I, Military Sealift Command had conducted the largest modern sealift operation of war materials of the American military. The ability for the United States to mobilize and sustain during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm displays America’s national security goals of forward power projection, maritime supremacy and the effective planning of their sealift strategy.

It can be traced back that Thomas Hobbes first formulated the idea of deterrence. Advocates of deterrence theory “believe that people choose to obey or violate the law after calculating the gains and consequences of their actions” (Onwudiwe, Odo, Onyeozili). Essentially, as stated above, individuals will engage in crime when the benefit of the crime outweighs the cost of committing the crime (punishment). Personally, I believe that individuals that are part of the Operation Ceasefire end their “street days” because they are mostly scared of the harsh consequences that will follow if they continue to engage in a life of crime. Operation Ceasefire may align well with theories such as deterrence theory, but maybe not so much with others. When
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
“The trouble is that a praise worthy quest for precision can descend into a flattering of tidy minds at the cost of a realistic grasp of the complexity and interconnectedness that is the story of strategic history.” Colin Gray warns in the opening sentences of the chapter “Irregular Warfare and Terrorism” in his book Another Bloody Century of the dangers of oversimplifying the categories of warfare. To look at warfare as either regular or irregular without being absolutely clear on the definitions of each and the context in which the terms are used is fruitless. Regular forces have been known to use irregular type tactics just as irregular forces have used conventional warfare to reach their political goals. It is imperative then, that the U.S. military forces are trained to fight wars falling on a spectrum of warfare and educated to distinguish the type of war they face. In order to protect national security interests as outlined in the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review, the U.S. armed forces must rebalance and be capable of conducting operations across the spectrum of conflict in order to win against both a regular and irregular adversary, combating a wide scope of tactics and strategies ranging from terror tactics to full scale, multi-phased conflict against a peer or near peer by maximizing the capability of the force and nation.
