All you need is a pair of sharp figure skates, and yourself. The affection of cold air breezing in your face while you glide across an ice rink dancing away, escaping your problems, feeling free, and performing in front of an audience. One of the most popular winter olympic sports is figure skating. The elements, ballet, and dance gives this sport its elegance. This event takes a lot of practice, especially balance. When your skates are touching the ice it can be slippery, your balance keeps you from falling. Natural skaters don’t have to worry about balance, they just do what they love, just like Gracie Gold. An outstanding 22 year old olympian named Gracie Gold was born on August 17th, 1995 in Newton, Massachusetts, as well
After being mesmerized by figure skating at the age of eight, I became a member of the Markham Skating Club. As a competitive figure skater, I must perform various jumps and spins in a choreographed program. I have participated in numerous competitions in Central Ontario and have received multiple medals for my achievements. Yet, my achievement as a figure skater stem from the adversity that I faced throughout my skating journey. This sport has imposed challenges to both my mental and physical strength that have ultimately constructed the qualities of dedication and humility within myself.
Be strong, i’m here for you, why do you feel the need to do this to yourself? Those are some common phrases I hear from day to day. I have always been a happy girl, I have a good family good house and a amazing gymnastics career, but two years ago my life changed forever. Ever since I was a little girl I had always known my goal and pushed myself to the highest levels to get it. My goal was the olympics and there was nothing holding me back or at least that's what I thought.
“Cheerleading involves skills which require the strength of football, the grace of dance, and the agility of gymnastics” (“Sport”). Many categorize competitive cheerleading as just an activity without any skill needed: there is nothing further from the truth! Competitive cheerleading is a sport that is dedicated to competition, fits the definition of a sport, and possesses a goal.
Interestingly enough, snowboarding was invented by Sherman Poppen in North Muskegon, Michigan, back in 1965. Nowadays, snowboarding is considered one of the most popular winter sports among teenagers. On the other hand, there are many people that don’t have the slightest idea how to ride a snowboard straight down a hill. There are four steps to learn the basic skills of snowboarding.
If things go hectic you can jump off a Skateboard usually unscathed, but a snowboard is not the same. Snowboards you must be on anything with an angle ex: mountain, hill, bump and literally anything you can gain momentum on will work. Skateboards require you to generate your own momentum with your foot or using one of the many ways that a snowboard does. Skateboarding does not require snow as it has wheels and it can also not be done on snow.
As a 29-year-old medical school applicant for which I have spent 23 of them in the world of competitive figure skating. For 19 years I was a competitive figure skater, competing at both the local and national level. Figure skating was my way of life, it guided every decision I made, whether I could go hang out with friends, go on family vacations, or what types of activities I could do so that I would not become injured, hampering my skating career. In the middle of my season in 2009 such injury occurred, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc partially caused by a grade one spondylolisthesis between my lumbar and sacral vertebrae. I was told that this was the end of my skating career, I would never be able to compete on that sheet of ice that
Skates used to be more like skis. Players glided on the ice rather than actually skated. Artifacts also show the use of animal bones as skate blades as well. Currently, steal blades are used. There is a small arc groove on the blade that provides the friction needed to counteract the slipperiness of the ice (Haché 37). The boot of the skate is hard enough to protect the foot from puck impact but also flexible enough “to allow the calf muscle to push forward and to ease knee bending when the player crouches” (Haché 35).
Like any other sport, ice-skating is obliged to creative people who bring something new to it. These people are known to everyone as the inventors of particular jumps, splits, spins. They are given credit for their work and, sometimes, the skating moves they invented carry their names. For instance, the Lutz jump was invented by Alois Lutz before World War II; the Walley jump was attributed to Bruce Mapes who performed with the Ice Follies in the 1930s. With Mabel Fairbanks that was never the case. The spins she invented never have been officially admitted to be exclusively her creation.
Sled hockey has been a part of the Paralympic games since 1994. The sport has experienced a dynamic growth in the past several years. Catering to the needs of the true athlete, sled hockey is not a game for wussies. When the word get's out on something as rewarding as sled hockey, both to the players and the fans, it's natural for interest to expand.
In 2024 or as close as 2020 roller derby should be an Olympic sport. I find that roller derby is more entertaining and a lot more interesting then some of the sport's that has, or is, in the Olympics. Such as canoe sprint, cycling road, golf, rowing, sailing, and table tennis, that's just the summer sports, the winter sports are, curling, luge, and skeleton. Roller derby is rapidly growing. There is at this moment 469 female roller derby teams, and in a team you need at least 12 people, so you are able to play tournaments and bouts. Knowing this knowledge if you times 469 by 12 you would get the minimum of the people playing, and that minimum is 5,628. This doesn't even count men's roller derby leagues, or the littles leagues, not only that
When Harry and mark got to the ice rink, they met their friends Gareth, Sheila, Rosie and Royston they were really pleased to see them. After about an hour's skating, they were all ready for a rest. Harry had brought drinks with him because, as he said, "Skating makes you really thirsty, doesn't it" suddenly, they noticed the time and realised it was time to go home. "Hasn't the time gone quickly?" said
Curling is a very cold, unpopular sport that I have known since I was four years old, when my parents started a curling club. Now, I am not talking about a curling iron that makes your hair look nice. I am talking about the sport of curling that is played on ice with rocks and brooms. To me, curling is not an odd, unknown sport. Yet within the world of sports, it is uncommon, and people only recognize it because of the Winter Olympics.
Snowboarding can be an energizing, invigorating experience and I think that everyone who likes skateboarding should give it a try. Snowboarding is very similar to skateboarding, the only differences are that you have to be strapped to the board and you need snow. The only type of equipment you need to snowboard is a snowboard and warm clothes. Snowboarding can be done at any ski resort and is growing in popularity.
What type of exercise lets you make music with your feet? Tap dancing, of course. From the classic films of Fred Astaire to contestants on the popular television show So You Think You Can Dance, most people have seen a dancer tapping. You may even have wanted to try it for yourself. In fact, this style of dance can be practiced by anyone at any age, and tap dancing classes have become popular with active seniors.
“In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. This portrays the sport of speed skating best. Speed skating is a very competitive, crowd-pleasing sport that the world has known for a long time, and there are many aspects to it. There is a fascinating history to speed skating, very famous speed skaters, and various types of speed skating.
