What type of exercise lets you make music with your feet? Tap dancing, of course. From the classic films of Fred Astaire to contestants on the popular television show So You Think You Can Dance, most people have seen a dancer tapping. You may even have wanted to try it for yourself. In fact, this style of dance can be practiced by anyone at any age, and tap dancing classes have become popular with active seniors.
As we age, it can become more challenging to find suitable ways to exercise. Joining a gym or a sports team might feel intimidating, and jogging through the neighborhood may be too rough on the joints. Dance, on the other hand, is a wonderful option. Whether it’s simple steps like shuffles and toe taps or more complicated combinations, each number is full of choreography to memorize. Valerie loves the mental challenge of tap class and says, “The beauty of tap dancing is that it gives you another way to enjoy the many rhythms of music and there are always new steps and patterns to learn.”
And if the physical and mental exercise isn’t enough, tap class also provides great social opportunities. There are new friends to be made, and it’s almost impossible not to have fun when there are tap shoes on your feet. Valerie says, “Besides the mental and physical challenges, tap dancing makes me feel very happy. I call it my comic relief. There is never a class where we aren’t laughing a great deal of the time.”
Thankfully, it’s becoming easier to find adult tap classes. Some of these classes are specifically geared to the older adult and may range from beginner level to advanced. To locate a tap class in your area, try phoning your local dance schools. If the school doesn’t have an adult class, recommend they offer one. If enough people are interested, they might take you up on your suggestion. Also be sure to check with your neighborhood community centre and your local government for any programs run through their recreation
According to Judith Hanna, “dance may promote wellness by strengthening the immune system through muscular action and physiological processes,” which shows that a person can benefit from dancing by allowing the body to do physical exercises which can allow the body to strengthen itself. In order to do this, there are multiple ways in which Judith Hanna focuses in on to show that dance can have a powerful impact on the body. She explains that there are four different ways in which a person can develop a since of control over their body by (1) possession dance, (2) mastery of movement, (3) escape or diversion from stress and pain through a change in emotion, states of consciousness/ physical capability and (4) confronting stressors to work through ways of handling their effects.
