The purpose of this study was comparing infants and toddlers in segregated and integrated programs and whether this would affect the development of the children. A childcare program moves the same -age children from room to room every year known as “segregated” (41, Rutherford & Whitington). If infants and toddlers had the same educator “until the age of three”, a secure attachment will development (41, Rutherford & Whitington). Segregation creates stress for the child such as being exposed to a new environment, caregiver and losing a secure attachment with the educator. The integrated program has small groups and a low teacher to child ratio thus meeting the wants and needs of the child and forming secure attachments. Relationships are created by daily interactions with the children and educators through experiences and routines. The educators are providing care, positive interactions, and responsive to each infant and toddler. One method known as the learning stories records and evaluates the children’s learning and develops a teacher and child relationship and cognitive skills. However, the learning stories provide limited understanding and depth regarding the child’s interest and learning experience. Recording the children’s learning experience within a large group is difficult to achieve. The integrated program allows the educator and families to have an understanding of each other which improves learning stories. Learning opportunities cannot be offered unless educators have previous knowledge of the child’s abilities. Families and educators have informal interactions with one another during the pickup and drop off the child. However, there is limited research regarding non-verbal interactions with families and educators in an infant and toddler program. The study used qualitative and quantitative measures and “four types of data were collected observational, documentation of learning, video, and meeting discussions.” (43, Rutherford & Whitington). This study compared infants and toddlers in segregated and integrated programs and educators and families’ thoughts on integrated programs. As a result, integrated programs “provided a better environment” and development compared to segregated program for infants and toddlers (45, Rutherford & Whitington). Educators and parents agreed that there were many benefits of an integrated program such as children were individuals and learned from one another and educators and parents had the opportunity to develop a relationship. The disadvantages of having an integrated program are planning lessons and activities for younger and older children and difficulties with staffing. The parents were concerned with routines being met and limited opportunities for same- age children interaction. Segregated programs raised a concerned whether it prevented infants and toddlers from educational opportunities. The integrated program structured allowed educators to spend more time with the children, which resulted in quality relationships. Parents and educators built a relationship over a period and educators recorded the children’s learning extensively. Integrated programs for infants and toddlers are consistent, built relationships, knowledge, and routine for children. An integrated program for infants and toddlers is not ideal because infants and toddlers need the most care.
Every two hours infants must be fed and changed, and toddlers are learning to walk and use the bathroom. Infants are toddlers should be segregated and integration should begin at toddlers. Toddlers’ are starting to gain awareness of their environment and interact with their peers. The segregated program questions the educational system in the United States. Every year children are entering a new grade level and forming a secured attachment with teachers and parents and teachers are building a relationship. At the beginning of the school year, children are stressed because of the change in environment and forming relationships. While an integrated program, the children are in the same room with familiar faces and allows them to feel comfortable and explore their environment. An integrated program will benefit toddlers and young children in the long run building lasting friendships, secure attachment, and parents trusting the educator. I think some of the disadvantages of an integrated program is needing additional teachers and funding because the program will require more resources. Overall, integrated programs are in the best interest of the young children and early childhood programs should consider adopting this
type.
I am a firm believer that the quality of the child care directly affects the child’s development in the classroom. By eliminating the need for competing preschools to continue to improve their curriculum and to remain relevant in the field of early childhood education, we risk falling into the same trap K-12 education has fallen into. The Child Development Center of College of San Mateo provides early care and educational programs for children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. Children are divided into classrooms with a “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two or three “associate” teachers. Klara attended Classroom, “A,” a stimulating and well-resourced classroom. Klara was observed for two hours on Monday from 9 am to 11 am and for two hours on Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am. During these two hours, classroom activities consisted of “free time,” “story time,” and an outside “play time.” A “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two “associate” teachers were present during observations. Additionally, a total of eighteen children were in attendance during the observed days.
Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. As with infants, no two are alike; each toddler is unique in his or her developmental stages, and each accomplishes milestones at different times. “Although children develop at different rates, there are common stages of development that serve as guidelines for what most children can do by a certain age” (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). The period from conception to birth is a truly beautiful development. And while the baby is quickly being formed from cell to human, the parents are quickly learning the birthing process and all there is to expect. There are three major parts to having a baby, the prenatal development, birth and the postpartum period.
There are a few types of preschool programs. First there are structured preschool programs that focus on emphasizing an actual school setting and classroom activities in order to prepare the child for kindergarten or first grade. There are also day care centers, which are not as structured as preschool centers. Daycare’s focus mainly on child’s development through social interaction with children and caregivers. Then there are head start programs that are geared to give children a foot in the right direction in order to be ready for preschool or kindergarten. The right kind of childcare can be a wonderful opportunity to promote the profound learning children experience from birth through age five (Selecting child care, 2002).
From the perspective I have at this stage in my journey in the early childhood education field, I would like to share what I have come to value and believe in regards to early learning and care by looking at my philosophy statement. To begin we will look at the statement and highlight three key features and find out why they are important to me, then we will see what they will look like in my practice, and lastly we will examine these ideas closely by looking at where they originated. By taking an in-depth look at my philosophy statement we will better understand the motivation behind my practice which I hope to continue to refine and refresh as I gain more knowledge and experience.
It is common knowledge that a parent is considered the most efficient caregiver for their children. It’s also known that with daily responsibilities of caring for a child financially, parents partake in full-time and/or part-time employment. While needing to do so, many children attend daycare/preschool facilities. Granted, it is the parent’s responsibility to cautiously select where they decide to take their children. This is because parents know that while they are away for numerous hours of the day, their children are in the hands of another care provider and that their care would have an enormous impact on their children. At a young age, a child’s social and cognitive skills are continuing to take shape and the amount of time spent in these facilities has a resilient impact on a child’s development. With proper and superior care no matter the time spent, such positive effects on a child’s development should endure in a child’s cognitive and social development. In other words, there is a great benefit of childcare/daycare attendance on a child’s development.
The Infant and Toddler Rating Scale is just one of the four scales that share the same format and use a scoring system. All the scales have different requirements because they assess different age groups and different settings. These tests are checking on the organization of space, interactions, activities, schedules and provisions of staff and parents. I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. Before learning about early childhood in this class I never realized all the way children at such a young age are developing. From the second part of this course I learned how much children are developing at the early childhood stage. I never realized children learn how about their emotions, having empathy, and self-concept at such a young age. I thought children had it easy. They play with friends, start school, and just be kids. One important thing that stood out to me in this chapter is that children’s self-esteem starts at this stage.
