Throughout my experience at my placement, I observed many different children in relation to their development and strengths in the infant classroom. The infant classroom has children that range from 7 months to 16 months. For my Child Study, I decided to observe the child that I have made the most connection with. She is the oldest of the classroom and started the same week I began my placement. Her name is Ryan and she was born on July 12, 2015. She is currently 16 months but will turn 17 months on December 12th. After speaking with her teachers at the daycare and observing drop offs in the morning, Ryan has an older sister, father, and mother in the household. Ryan is a child that is constantly exploring her environment and the toys it has to offer within it. According to Coople and Bredekamp (2009), “Much of this book time is shared page turning, commenting on pictures, and conversation around the content of the book.” (p. 82) Another way to engage with story time would be to start providing puppets that are available for the children, especially Ryan, to begin really engaging in pretend play. Another developmentally appropriate recommendation for Ryan would be creating situations that help stimulate her cognitive development. This could be done by providing different size blocks to help with building or providing puzzles. Gonzalez-Mena and Widmeyer Eyer (2015) stated, “It is essential to recognize the importance of play to a young child and how it contributes to his or her cognitive development.” (p. 167) Letting Ryan play and use manipulates around the classroom is going to help further advance in her cognitive development, along with other domains of
