At the end of the 18th century an industrial revolution began in England, it was the period of transition from manual labour to machine production. The industrial revolution is undoubtedly one of the most important processes that have taken place in the history of mankind. In fact, it has led to the emergence of many revolutionary scientific inventions such as a water frame, a spinning jenny, a steam engine and others. What were the positive and negative aspects of the groundbreaking developments that occurred during and after the industrial revolution and how did it affect the world today? Industries in England during the first half of the 18th century were insignificant. Coal mining in the North-East and most textile production
Most of the scientific developments that were made during the period of the industrial revolution serve as the basis to numerous modern inventions, for example, the internal combustion engine, the Internet, modern factories, to name a few. The desire for inventions during this period covered a wide range of people: artisans, farmers, university professors. Creators of new equipment were often weavers, spinners, mechanics, metallurgists. This was the era of engineers and inventors, who often did not have any special education. The industrial revolution had a huge impact on today's world. Moreover, this revolution helped to increase average wages in many cities in the period from the 18th and 19th centuries. The invention of the telegraph provided people with a new way of communicating around the world. People migrated to the industrial cities on the steam trains and they got beneficial job opportunities due to the establishment of new massive factories. There is no secret that the industrial revolution was truly revolutionary not only for the economic progress of the country and lifestyle and even worldview of people has changed forever as the society became more industrially advanced. The industrial revolution changed the way people worked and what they worked for. The Industrial Revolution in Western Europe provided the context for economists and political writers of the 19th century to promote three different economic plans designed to meet the needs of workers and entrepreneurs. State-sponsored socialism was first proposed by Eduard Bernstein as a reform plan for the existing economic system of capitalism. The major tenet of state-sponsored socialism included government-sponsored legislation to regulate business over time. Although there were many advantages including improving the standard of living and national unity; however, there were also disadvantages because socialism didn’t eliminate poverty nor the social evils inherent in a market-based economy. The economic system of socialism was implemented in Germany during the 19th century through legislation. In some ways, socialism was successful because it lowered the number of unemployed people and it provided healthcare for its poorest citizens. In other ways, socialism was unsuccessful because it was not consistent with the fundamental characteristics of human greed. Although it failed to operate under a consistent competitive profit, the economic system of socialism did address the needs of both entrepreneurs and workers because the middle class grew.
The impact of the Industrial Revolution was a positive experience for some, but it was a great difficulty for others. Because of the demands for reform and protection for workers arose, government and unions began to take place. That was how the evils of the Industrial Revolution addressed in England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The technological aspect of the industrial revolution is the development of machines which are used in industries for instance the Slatter’s mill founded for the milling of cotton (Library of Congress).
The Industrial Revolution was a time of great change and increased efficiency. No more would be goods be produced by sole means of farming and agriculture, but now by the use of machinery and factories. Technology was beginning to increase along with the food supply as well as the population. However, this increase in population would greatly impact the social aspect of that time. Urbanization was becoming much more widespread. Cities were becoming overwhelmingly crowded and there was an increase in disease as well as harsh child labor. Although child labor would be reduced somewhat due to unions, the Industrial Revolution still contained both it’s positive and negative results.
The Industrial revolution was a turning point for the earth and humans, every aspect of human’s life and life styles were changed dramatically. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Great Britain went through change in all phases of life with the industrial revolution. Scientific improvements and technological modernizations brought growing industrial and agricultural production. The biggest changes were in rural areas, where the local land sometimes became urban and industrialized because of advances in agriculture and industry.
The Anthropocene marks a point in time where human activities were able to greatly alter the environment, some historians believe that it marked the point in time where the industrial revolution began (1700CE to 1900CE). The Industrial revolution essentially was mankind’s breakthrough into modernity, the rapid advancements in technology and the utilisation of fossil fuels gave man a seemingly infinite supply of energy that could be used to transform manual processes into automated ones which was a massive game changer for the manufacturing, communications and transportation industries.(1)
The time that is known as Industrial Revolution started about in 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. This era was a period that some fundamental changes affect the textile manufacture, metallurgy, agriculture and transportation. Industrial Revolution means the devolution from hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron process. The Revolution started in England and within a little time spread in some countries of Europe and United States.
The industrial revolution was the most important, which started around the eighteenth century towards the nineteenth century in Europe. This great event was the fastest spreading event in human history. The capacity of economy and population growth was unexpected especially at the areas in which it flourished. The industrial revolution benefited almost everyone around the world and brought about new social classes, large cities and many new innovations including medical discoveries especially in Britain as it based it is scientific innovations on experiments and practical work rather than theories and logic.
In conclusion, the industrial revolution brought many changes to Britain. The changes included the textile industry, the steam powered engines, which helped create steam-powered locomotives and steam boats. Because of this major improvement in the industrial revolution railroads began to sprout and was a more efficient way to transport goods and people across Britain. The Industrial Revolution no doubt brought rapid changes to people’s lives in Britain.
The Industrial Revolution was a time for prosperity and a multitude of technological advancements throughout America. Through good and bad times that this period brought America displays true success through many different aspects. New technology and key inventions were important at the time such as the spinning jenny, steam engine and power loom, these inventions allowed for work to be done more efficiently and eventually factorie were developed to house these machines as more developed. As factors were created and become more popular the urbanization of cities came about, pulling more people into cities to work. More jobs were offered and the population in cities rose due to the high demand for workers in the newly created factories.
The effects of the Industrial Revolution turned out to be positive and negative push toward modernization in America. The positive side was to make America farmer’s lives easier and the Industrial Revolution linked countries together and create more cohesive identity by turning the rural communities became dependent on rural communities for food. The development of technology led to rapid scientific and technological advancements in the 19th and 20th centuries. Thanks to machines generate mass produced items allowed America to create more jobs and boost trade. Another positive side of the Industrial Revolution was better transport networks. To change the forms of transport to horses, canals to steam engine helped it easier for people to trade, as well as making it easier for businesses to move goods around.
Major bias exists in discussion of the Industrial Revolution even among its contemporaries. Thus, it is quite impossible to determine empirically whether industrialisation is best described as detrimental or beneficial. Indeed, industrialisation radically changed the way of life in Britain and all of Europe, but the varying changes are intertwined and not able to be separated and compared fairly. Complex change such as this cannot be dissected and scrutinised for good versus bad; the industrial revolution is both and it is neither. It cannot be
The modern world is extremely reliant on technology, whether it has to deal with smart phones, cars, or medicine. Without the Industrial Revolution, the present day would not be the same. The Industrial Revolution was a blessing for the middle class because production, healthcare, and transportation improved. Industrialization improved the lives for all groups of people in Europe because of the advancement of technology. Lifestyles began to improve due in part to the introduction of efficient machines rather than hand production. It was necessary for industrialization to occur in order for the large population to sustain.
The Industrial Revolution was a time of great change in the world and changed the way many products were manufactured. Originating in England and Great Britain, its effects spread across the globe and influenced the way people lived and worked and lead to the modern world known today. While it did not always have positive effects, through imperialism, Britain’s Industrial Revolution brought about technological innovations that transformed the world and its economies.
