The Industrial Revolution was a time for prosperity and a multitude of technological advancements throughout America. Through good and bad times that this period brought America displays true success through many different aspects. New technology and key inventions were important at the time such as the spinning jenny, steam engine and power loom, these inventions allowed for work to be done more efficiently and eventually factorie were developed to house these machines as more developed. As factors were created and become more popular the urbanization of cities came about, pulling more people into cities to work. At this time it was normal for children to start working in factories at very young ages in order to help support their families. Children worked in special parts of factories doing special jobs fit for them because of their sizes and work ethic. They worked hard and long to earn more than fair wages to help support their family which also helped the economy. More employed Americans meant a better economy and contributed to America being and industrial power house. “For most of the nation's history, children labored next to adults on farms, in shops, and in factories” (child). The demand for workers in these large factories filled with new technology and machinery was so high that Children were needed to work, and as more people moved to cities farms needed people to work as well. Advances in technology and key inventions provide more efficient ways of work and allow for more job opportunities making the US more successful. Urbanization pulls Americans from rural areas to turn small towns into large cities, as factories become more common more people leave their farms to work in the city creation powerhouse cities with booming populations and plenty of work. As success in cities arose and the factory system grew immigrants, mainly from europe, traveled to America to be apart of this economic advance. Immigrant workers and American workers were provided with jobs in factories, homes in tenements and good wages to get by and support their families which is all any American could ask for at this time. Working conditions were not what they are now bt at this time no oe could complain because as long as these workers had jobs, a roof over their head and food on the table they were living the American dream. Children in factories provided more labor and allowed for more families to have higher incomes, this helped the economy and contributed to the success at this time. The aging of the generation of child factory workers improved the quality of adult factory workers and created a reserve pool of adults with factory experience. This pool of adults is particularly significant for men. As a child worker, they were exposed to many different positions and so learned a great deal of experience. Not only were the children fulfilling the basic factory needs, but were creating a more experienced labor force for the future. No longer where adults had to learn how to use machinery when entering the factory market but instead had worked in textiles during their childhood so had already obtained the human capital needed to work.

According to the article “A History of Child Labor” reviewed by Milton Fried, a child could work as long as six days a week for up to 18 hours a day, and only make a dollar a week. Child labor was nothing but cheap labor. The big companies loved cheap labor because then they could make an item for not very much money, and make a huge profit margin. Fried continues to state how cheap the labor was, “One glass factory in Massachusetts was fenced with barbed wire ‘to keep the young imps inside.’ These were boys under 12 who carried loads of hot glass all night for a wage of 40 cents to $1.10 per night.” Unlike, children today who are in bed sleeping by 8 pm each night, these children had to stay up all night working to make just enough income for their families. Sadly, the children had no choice but to work for very little pay. Their mothers and fathers made so little money in the factory system that they couldn’t afford to let their children enjoy their childhood: “Other working children were indentured—their parents sold their labor to the mill owner for a period of years. During the 1870’s the United States experienced great changes with the end of the Civil War. America was going through a period called Reconstruction. Tensions were fairly high and an air of freedom was present throughout the nation. By 1877, it was obvious the United States was beginning to develop into a recognizably modern economic system of making, earning, spending, and living (Brown 60). In 1880, “over half of American workers worked on farms and only one in twenty worked on manufacturing” (Brown 59). Farmers outnumbered factory by a large number, but factories were still abundant. Child labor occurred after the Civil War as well. By 1872, more than 10,000 children were employed in Philadelphia’s industrial workplaces. That number was even larger in cities such as New York, and it increased as the years progressed (Brown 60).

Urbanization was becoming much more widespread. Cities were becoming overwhelmingly crowded and there was an increase in disease as well as harsh child labor. Industrialization changed the lives of many, including immigrants and the working class in the United States. As a result of industrialization, many Americans were drawn to cities since that is where most of the industrial reform took place. This obviously created more jobs and became a major advantage for the working class, especially immigrants. Once people started industrializing and saw the large amount of positive effects they continued in the same fashion with bright ideas and kept the economy flowing in the right direction. There were many benefits of this progressive revolution.
