My Individual Professional Development Plan
I currently hold a staff bachelor of science, registered nursing position in a veteran health care facility. In reflecting back on my 10-year career as a registered nurse, I feel I have made some good choices to advance my career. I choose the area of health (cardiac) that interested me and would continue to challenge myself. I have worked in medical/surgical/telemetry and acute care units in a bedside setting since obtaining my degree.
I chose to start immediately furthering my career after graduating with an associate of science degree in nursing and enrolled in a BSN program within six months after graduating. I tried to broaden my nursing experience by getting involved in nursing activities outside
I choose informatics as a concentration as it seems to be some component of it in providing care in all fields of nursing and research should I decide to go that direction in the future. I feel that computers and the information they provide will be in health care well into the future. I would like to utilize further this degree by providing home care or telehealth and provide hands-on care rather than remove myself from the clinical arena. I plan in the future to be more involved with the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing and medical-surgical nursing by writing articles, test items and working on committee to stay abreast of the many changes and opportunities in this field. I strive to be part of the instrumental movement in informatics to bring constructive changes to the way healthcare is delivered to provide safe, convenient and efficient healthcare to the masses.
In the next three years, I plan to become an advanced practice registered nurse. I have applied and plan to further my career by obtaining a doctorate in nursing degree with the specialty of adult nursing practice to further be able to contribute to the nursing field in a more advanced capacity.
