The DNP Adventure The decision to enroll in graduate school came after considerable time and soul searching. While contemplating the decision to return to school I thought about life, school and work. I realized that my experience in these areas have prepared me for the challenge and I am going to succeed. Education has prepared me for the doctorate of nursing program in many ways. Obtaining knowledge in subjects like statistics, advanced pathophysiology, and health assessment were educational but the advanced nursing research course had the greatest impact on me. Research has influenced me and helped me grow as an advanced practice nurse adding the ability to research and find the evidence-based solutions to patient problems. One example was a patient with symptoms of pulmonary embolism and the computerized tomography angiogram of the chest report was inconclusive for pulmonary embolism. In …show more content…
Some people experience the downs like having a mentally challenged child, a husband with a traumatic brain injury, and the loss of both parents within a year. Some experience the ups in life like graduating the master’s in nursing program and starting a new and challenging job. These ups and downs in life are some of my ups and downs that have been educational in my life. These events have strengthened me mentally, spiritually, and educationally. Regardless of what occurs in life, at work or in school, I have the ability to overcome the obstacles and the strength of mind, a compassionate heart and the knowledge to succeed in any task I undertake. Life’s experiences, work, and education have prepared me to further my education. I will achieve this goal with the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and provide my patients with the best evidence based care possible. I will also have the ability to impact change in quality improvement, policy and procedure, and overall patient care with evidence based
Transitioning from academic nursing student to Registered Nurse/New Graduate Nurse (NGN) within the healthcare environment is a challenging task for many NGNs. They may encounter a number of challenges, such as the following: transition shock, professional isolation, lack of clinical experience, stress, lack of a support network and cultural incompetence. At the end, this essay will discuss the rationale for developing my two most important goals for the next twelve months.
I decided at that moment that I would return to school and graduate with my bachelor?s degree. I made a promise to myself that I would finish my education. If I complete my education, I would make my parents proud of me. Plus, I want to be the first person on either side of my family to attend graduate school. Adults return to college primarily because they desire a higher paying career or a professional job. This could be a registered nurse, an elementary school teacher, a policeman or an attorney. It could also be an accountant, a journalist, a librarian, an interior decorator or a beautician (Smith, 2001).
Nursing, as a crucial part of the health care system, keeps evolving while dealing with an increasingly complex clinical situation that involves quality of patient care. Therefore, to successfully handle these scenarios, nursing needs to become more advanced, clinically and academically. A DNP degree is needed in this situation because according to Dunbar- Jacob, Navito & Khalil (2013), a DNP degree is considered to have more impact on nursing than a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree due to the advanced clinical education a DNP provides (p. 425). Hence, the DNP degree has an enormous impact in nursing practice especially in terms of improving clinical care, promoting leadership roles, and improving educational status.
The Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) represents the terminal practice degree for the field of nursing.
What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. I knew throughout nursing school that I wanted to advance my education further than bedside nursing. I debated on whether to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and just become a nurse practitioner, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to advance my education even further to help make and promote changes in healthcare. By choosing to become a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner, I hope to change the stigma that is attached with being “just a nurse” and show that nurses play a vital role in redesigning
My adversities are the catalysts that lead to the enhancement of the opportunities in my life. I believe that my life is constructed with great purpose; a purpose that has caused the hardships I have endured thus far but also a purpose that is the core of my various achievements, a purpose that opens doors for me to support others and gives me the hope of an influential and resourceful future. My past history, present experience at Cardozo SHS and Future plans strengthen my desire to attend college and make me a great candidate for the Esperanza Scholarship.
...helped her baby at the same time. The positive results are twofold: happy baby, happy mother. Also, the affirmed need for further research brings forth ideas of how to accomplish that need. I could put a plan into action and achieve that goal in my practice setting. Integrating research into the practice of nursing is rewarding and helps to contribute to the advancement of education.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. He explained that a career in the medical field was about responsibility, the responsibility to work with all members of the healthcare team for the well-being of the patient as well as their family
To secure as position as an Adult/Gerontology Acute/Critical Care NP in which my advanced education, training, and skills may be effectively utilized towards enhancing patient outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration and continuing education to remain knowledgeable of research findings and practice recommendations in order to establish and execute the most appropriate evidence for practice as well as evaluate outcomes to create guidelines and improve clinical practice.
Advanced Practice nursing (APN) is considered the usage of a broader scope of constructive, logical and research-based expertise related to the health and well-being of patients, within a varying disciplines (DeNisco & Barker, 2013). What is the future position of APNs in the progression of our healthcare system? What role will this writer assume, educator, practitioner, population health coach, or all three? The use of theory, primarily Sister Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model, and EBP give this writer a firm foundation to develop and modify her own practice framework.
For nursing, research has played a major role in the way clinical practice is done. Research has allowed nurses to provide appropriate care to patients. It allows them to perform their job by providing them the tools and information they need in order to make the decisions on the concerns for caring the patient (Polit & Beck, 2006). Moreover, research can also take focus on the workers themselves in order to improve the practice both on a professional and personal level. An example of a study conducted by King, Vidourek, and Schweibert of University of Cincinnati created a study to determine if there is a correlation between ...
I hope to impact this professional with my knowledge and expertise. I am now in school again to further my knowledge of this profession. It may seem old for some. However, for me learning has no age and boundaries as I continued to gain more knowledge and perhaps someday I can be a mentor for my peers. I hope to someday work In Risk management where I can continue to fight and argue the rights of my patients and peers whom all deserve a sense of dignity and self-worth. My contribution to this profession includes providing and promoting care with a holistic approach that is inclusive of the mind, body, spiritual belief practices because the patients I see as being more than just another patient in need of my care. The patients are like you and I and perhaps wants the same as I want for them. I’m sure with my great sense of enthusiasm that I may accomplish something here because my day will never end until I make an unmistakable stamp on a profession I always wanted to practice since that little girl whose heart was touched by the many caring professionals that provided care to my mom. Sound like I’m on a mission that indeed I
