The taste of the processed chicken from my elementary school cafeteria remains imbedded in my memory. I can still taste the chunks of chicken that could not be broken up by my teeth, and the tired, lazy feeling I had walking back to my next class. This is the exact situation organic farmer and producers are trying to avoid by making healthy products. The documentary, In Organic We Trust, attempts to persuade the viewers that organic products create a healthy lifestyle, and improve living conditions for people all over the world. Kip Pastor’s use of ethos and logos in his documentary are strong and provide supporting evidence, however, Pastor is lacking an abundant amount of pathos. Pastor incorporates logos into his documentary by allowing the audience to experience a multitude of facts and supporting evidence. Ethos is used in the film through Pastor’s interviews with professionals, and pathos is shown by the touching stories of individuals. Pastor’s strongest rhetorical technique is the use of logos. The viewers are provided with an abundant amount of facts and knowledge that help to support Pastor’s point of view. The video attempts to persuade readers to eat organic, and this goal is accomplished by providing evidence that processed food creates an unhealthy lifestyle. For example, Pastor notes that there has been a 150% increase in obesity, causing a shorter lifespan. Pastor also provides statistics such as one American every five minutes dies of obesity, and one out of three people get diabetes. These facts are meant to get the viewers attention, and cause them to think twice before they eat fast food. These logos are effective because they are able to make a huge statement, screaming to the viewers that lives are in jeopar... ... middle of paper ... ...ocessed, un-chewable food from their childhood. Pastor uses logos best by providing to the viewers many facts that support his point of view. These facts ranged from effects on the human body to the environment, all supporting that organic food is healthy. Ethos was also used effectively by incorporating interviews with professionals. Pastor was able to gain respect and authority because he has done his research on the topic. Lastly, pathos was used in the documentary to appeal to the emotions of the audience. Pastor accomplishes this by interviewing people who have touching stories involving the issue of healthy eating. Pastor effectively uses rhetorical technique to convince the audience that organic food is the healthy choice, leaving the viewers with only one thought to consider: Why not go organic? One of my favorite commercials to watch is the Chick-Fil-A commercials. Their commercials are very ironic but at the same time interesting and entertaining. The main purpose of their commercial is to persuade an audience to go and buy their product or maybe convince an audience to come back again and buy more of their product. They are able to influence their audience through the use of rhetorical elements. Rhetorical elements include: the rhetor, discourse, audience, and rhetorical triangle. Their commercials don’t necessarily target one particular audience, they incorporate different ideas into their commercial to target different audiences such as families, and football fans.
In recent years, it is not even necessary to turn on the news to hear about the bad reputation farming has been getting in recent years. What with the media focusing on things like drugs in animals and Pink Slime, or Lean Finely Textured Beef, it is a wonder that people are eating “non-organic” foods. However, many pro-farming organizations having been trying to fight back against these slanders. Still, the battle is not without heavy competition, and a good portion of it comes from Chipotle, a fast food Mexican restaurant that claims to only use completely organic ingredients in their food. Chipotle is constantly introducing advertisements claiming to have the natural ingredients while slandering the name of farmers everywhere. Perhaps the most well-known is “The Scarecrow,” a three minute ad that features some of the most haunting images Chipotle has ever featured. While “The Scarecrow” uses tear-inducing images and the almost eerie music to entice the audience to the company’s “free-range farming” ideals, it lacks substantial logos yet, it still
Our lives are influenced by visual rhetoric on a daily basis. Rhetorical components go unnoticed unless one is intently searching for them. Companies carefully work visual rhetoric into advertisements and use it to their advantage to lure in potential consumers. The German car company, Bayerische Motoren Werke, or more commonly known as “BMW”, uses a clip from NBC’s Today Show in 1994. In the clip, the characters are discussing the newfangled idea of the internet. BMW uses nostalgia of the 1990’s as bait to attract an older audience who remember the ‘90’s and when the internet was a new invention. BMW uses the rhetorical elements of character, dialogue, and focus to sell their product.
By doing this he is making his evidence reliable since he uses two different styles of research and stating where he got his evidence. You can analyze the rhetorical appeals of ethos by looking at where the author gets into his evidence and how he states it as well such as, “I asked Todd Dawson, a biologist at Berkeley, to run McDonald’s meal through his mass spectrometer and calculate how much of carbon in it came originally from corn plant.” (p. 116). This will show you what type of author he is and where his intentions are with his writing. As for pathos, he talks about his own experiences with him and his family when it came to fast food. What his relationship with fast food is and his son, who seems to really enjoy fast food and how it effects his relationship with food such as, “My eleven-year-old son, Issac, was more than happy to join me at McDonald’s;” (p. 109). This means that the author is trying to be relatable to the audience. Finally logos, Pollan has brought in a scientists that did research on the fast food. Check your supermarket, there could be lies on your food, telling you that what you are eating is organic and cared for but most of it is not. The documentary In Organic We Trust by Kip Pastor focuses on organic foods, what they are, how they are grown, and what makes them “organic”. What he finds is shocking and relevant to society today in every way possible. Pastor proves this to the audience by using a strong form of logos throughout the documentary. He conveys it to those watching by using pathos to play on their heart strings, but lacks via ethos to win over the rest of the audience. A great job is done in this film of convincing the audience that Pastor is on their side and fighting for the health of America, even questioning what “organic” actually is.
In everyday life we are bombarded with advertisements, projects, and commercials from companies trying to sell their products. Many of these ads use rhetorical devices to “convey meaning [,] or persuade” their audiences (Purdue OWL) . Projects, such as the Dove Self-Esteem Project uses native advertising in their commercials, which refers to a brand or product being simultaneously and indirectly promoted. In this essay, I will analyze the rhetorical devices, such as ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos, as well as the fallacies corresponding to each device, that the Dove Company uses in their self-esteem project .
Steven Shapin is an expert when it comes to telling people the reality of the situation. In his, article “What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic?” Shapin exposes and explains the truth behind the word organic. He explains that our view on organic is not a reality. The small farms that we picture in our heads are really just big business in disguise and these big businesses are trying to do good by supposedly not using harmful pesticides. Which are supposed to not damage the environment but in reality they are probably not making any sort of difference. Some people care about the environment, while others are buying taste when it comes to organic food but using different pesticides are going to help the taste, only freshness tastes the best.
Have you ever wondered if organic foods are actually better for you? What if organic foods are not actually healthy and are just an immense scam from food companies to take your money away from you? In the documentary, In Organic We Trust, the narrator Kip Pastor attempts to persuade the viewers that, although the food system may be flawed, organic foods are actually better to consume. Pastor’s use of pathos and logos in this documentary are extremely credible and well structured, but the ethos Pastor provided in this documentary are not as well structured as the pathos and logos. Pastor does an excellent job in structuring the film In Organic We Trust, in an attempt to send his message across to the viewers. In the documentary in order to prove that organic foods are better than regular industrialized foods, Pastor uses the three different types of arguments pathos, ethos and logos. The film starts off by Pastor introducing himself and stating why he believes organic food are better showing his pathos and ethos. Then, Pastor goes on to explain numerous misconceptions about farming and how foods are grown, therefore showing his logos. Throughout the whole film Pastor explains the truth about farming and not sugar coating anything in order to prove his message.
Advertisements show up everywhere in our lives. Whether you’re on the computer, watching TV, driving down the road, or reading propaganda you are observing advertisements. They are constantly altering our opinions and they do this with three simple tactics. Ethos, logos, and pathos, people have been using the rhetoric system from 1,000 years ago, literally because the rhetoric approach was created by Aristotle. It has with stood the test of time and is still the best tactic to convince people to do something. That advertising and marketing uses rhetoric and is pretty successful. I will be analyzing Ram’s “God made a Farmer” commercial and explain how each aspect of rhetoric was used and what was so effective about this commercial.

In his speech, “Teach Every Child about Food” he shares powerful stories of his anti-obesity project and makes the case for an all-out assault on our ignorance of food. Jaime Oliver’s speech aims to alter the perspective of Americans and their decisions about food and its effects. Since then, Oliver’s TED talk has been viewed across the nation and brought a reality to the issue with food education. Jamie Oliver successfully utilizes ethos, logos, and pathos to portray his belief that without the use of food education, America and its children will fall under the weight of its own obesity.

The term “organic” is almost everywhere in modern society, whether it’s used to promote a product or it’s debated on whether it really benefits the human diet. Organic food is heavily debated on as it appears more and more in local grocery stores and farmers markets begin to populate, it raises questions such as “Is organic food better than food grown with pesticides and biologically engineered genes?” and “Are there benefits to eating organically over foods grown in any other way?” In terms of what data and results show in research may help lead to answers to most of the heavily debated issues throughout discussions on organic food.
