Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
Professionalism, within the nursing context, can be a concept that is complex. The definition of professionalism, according to the textbook, Nursing Now!, is “The demonstration of high-level personal, ethical, and skill characteristics of a member of a profession” (Catalano, 2017, p. 5). There are many characteristics that define professionalism in the workplace and actions that a nurse can take to portray a professional attitude and manner. In nursing school, professionalism is taught in the classroom using different examples of education.
Professionals are people who have equipped themselves with the knowledge and skills in a given field. The interest of improvement of the professional identity is an evidence of how high standards are placed upon the professionals in the community (Johnson et al., 2012). Each profession creates its norms, values and scope of practice that distinguishes it from any other profession. Different legal ethics are upheld and everyone needs to work as per the stipulated ethics in the field to be part of the profession. People in the field are expected to be knowledgeable and independently use decision making in solving various problems that may arise. The decisions made should be within the norms and values stipulated for a profession.
There are many attributes that contribute to being professional. The many that stick out in my mind are responsibility and accountability, leadership, honor and integrity, respect, and caring compassion and communication. All of these attributes pertain to the professional work environment in the own important way. When you are a professional you need to have responsibility and accountability. This means you have to demonstrate awareness of your own limitations, and identify developmental needs and approaches for improvements. To name a few examples of professionalism in the workplace - is being on time, limiting absences, can communicate effectively, dress in suitable clothes, and shows a willingness to work with others. Commitment to continuous development of competency depends a great deal on the motivation of the individual, and the extent of self-awareness and honesty he/she has concerning abilities and skills. Accessing one’s personal level of competence could prove to be a daunting task without a focused desire for continued professional development, the help of co-workers, supervisors, continuing education classes, and a genuineness of attitude that isn’t afraid, or resentful of critique. Cultivating an honest understanding of one’s own knowledge or lack of knowledge in certain areas, or even a gap in skills or abilities is crucial to the continuing development of professional competence.
This modern era is the era of competition and we all are here to do our best to survive. To prove our existence we all need to show that we have skills in our hand and we are here to make our mark. In an organization even to fit in, we need to stand out. There are some skills and competencies which help us survive in the organization and there are others which make us different. We need both to be an asset to the company.

Professional development, in its most simple definition, is learning opportunities. Under professional development, individuals are open to a wide array of these opportunities in order to gain knowledge and improve. The learning opportunities that make up professional development take up many forms. Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained. Being assertive, being able to lead, being someone who can persuade others to a cause shows someone who is dependable and strong. After all, I have learned that if I do not stand for what I want, I could easily be led to a path where I despise myself. To be the best I can be, I have to be able to define my boundaries with others and myself. By doing so, I can not only be my most productive and successful self, but others will learn what to expect from me.
