This semester I have grown in so many different areas from my professional knowledge to academically challenging environment. I have been given so many opportunities to grow in my knowledge through first hand experiences and learning through advice and guidance from my college professors, supervisor, collaborative teacher, and so many more that I have been surrounded by the past couple of months. One of the areas I believe I have grown the most in is how to create and maintain a positive learning environment. The classroom environment is very important to student learning. I have been able to observe and learn from my collaborative teacher and paraprofessional on how to manage a classroom and keep a positive learning environment. I’ve really been able to grow in my understanding of the importance of routine, communication of expectations, organization of learning activities, and giving the clear sense of mutual care and respect with the students. In our kindergarten classroom, we keep our daily routines very similar to allow the students to know what is coming next and know what is expected to reduce chaos and confusion. The students have learned we follow the routine of helpers, calendar, talking circle, snack time, and getting water almost every single morning. If we miss any of these things the students will notice and question why we didn’t do it. I’ve learned how much smoother days will go when we are able to stick to our normal routines and the students know what is coming next in the day. My collaborative teacher sets aside time each morning to complete a talking circle. In my Designing and Sustaining a Classroom Learning Community Environment class informed us all about the benefits of morning meetings. It was great being able to transfer what I learned in the class and actually see it implemented into the class. I have been able to see the true benefits of setting aside time in the day to allow each student the chance to talk and share whatever they would like. This is one of my favorite parts of the day. When learning about this is my college class we discussed if morning meetings were a waste of instructional time, however now that I have been able to see how much the students love this time, how much they learn about each other, and how it cuts down on random sharing through out the day makes it worth it. I don’t view this time as a waste of instructional time because it is teaching the students how to interact with peers, listen to others when talking, and become more comfortable in their daily

I have become much more flexible in my approach in dealings with others thanks to the guidance of my Principal and Mentor. I am much more willing and open to pursue different avenues to build and maintain trusting relationships with staff. I’ve worked one-on-one and presented several teachers with new ideas and strategies for ensuring all students can meet objectives, but have different ways of demonstrating them. I’ve facilitated and worked alongside the Science Department as they rolled out a new cross-curricular project with our Math team, which required a conglomerate of teacher communication and learning
I believe every student is entitled to a safe learning environment where they can reach their full potential academically and behaviorally. Students will reach their full potential in a positive learning environment. The positive learning environment will be established from the beginning of the year providing a lasting impact on the students academic, and behavior performance throughout the entire year. The positive learning environment will be a classroom setting, which allows students to feel welcomed, safe, and important on daily basis allowing learning to occur to its fullest potential. To ensure my students are in a positive learning environment there must be a behavior management plan clearly explaining the expectations I have for my students. Throughout my behavior management plan I will explain how I plan to implement expectations so students act accordingly. My behavior management plan will be individually tailored to my students allowing me to push them to their fullest potential to by taking into consideration each student’s behavior and personal needs.
In conclusion, I feel like the most important thing I can do to create a positive learning environment is model all of the behaviors I expect my kids to learn and be able to model themselves. My kids should be able to learn appropriate and inappropriate behaviors from the skills they acquired from watching models. My children must be motivated and feel as though they can learn and model the behaviors presented, or they will never try to reach any type of goals set before them. Overall, I want to increase their self-efficacy so they feel they can achieve goals I have set before them or ones they have made themselves.
In conclusion I feel that I have gained knowledge that can only be obtained through hands on experience in the classroom. With this experience I changed my assumption about classroom management techniques and have a totally new outlook which will only aid me as a teacher. This will be of great help to me going forward but I feel as a teacher you must be constantly open to learning and improving

In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.

As discussed throughout this paper we build our classroom management plans based on our past experiences, our knowledge, our professional learning and our very own personal reflection. The importance of our beliefs, values and our philosophy play a major role in our planning. I, personally have a strong desire to support students who are often labelled ‘troubled’ and ‘the naughty child’, I believe there are reasons behind why students misbehave and strive to do my best as an educator to engage students through positive reinforcements as discussed and continue to put in place preventive practices. Building our own positive learning framework is key to a successful classroom. Even throughout our ongoing experiences we may adapt to other methods, theories and even values according to our journey as a teacher. My cooperating teacher has been employed in the field of education for 19 plus years. She has been in her current position as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at the Lighthouse Learning Center for 12 years. Observing a teacher who has so many years of experience in the classroom is very beneficial. She shared with me this week her teaching philosophy that has evolved from her many years in the classroom. The components of her philosophy include a focus on people, strategies, and tools.

Before we can consider ourselves professional teachers or even an expert teacher, we must first understand the way in which our students learn, how they are motivated to learn and what kind of environment would support their best learning. These questions have long been pondered by psychologists and teachers alike. As a pre-service teachers, I believe it is important for us to also begin considering these questions and take them into account for our future teaching practices. Moreover, in order for meaningful learning to occur and remain relevant for our students, we need to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. I believe this environment of safe and inclusive education is created through three key areas. These areas consist of the different facets of a child’s motivation and the idea of scaffolding particularly in regards to information processing.
