Should there be such thing as partial credit on a math test? I believe that students should be able to get partial credit on math test because the teachers make mistakes sometimes to during a lesson. So why should students not be able to make a simple mistake on a test? Now the student should not get credit for showing their work and getting nothing right but if the student messes up one part of the equation and if he/she would have gotten that one part right they would have gotten the question rights that is when the teacher should give some partial credit. So if the student shows his/her work but does not do anything right they should not get any partial credit. If the student gets the problem wrong but has the equation set up right he/she just made a little calculation error they should get ¾ of a point. If you are a teacher you shouldn’t expect your students to do every single problem right and not missing a thing because they are human just like you are they make mistakes sometimes they are not always going to get the equation completely right. If the student gets the equation wrong and you don’t think you should give partial credit let them redo the problems they missed and see if they can find and fix their own mistakes and if they can then you should give them some partial credit because that proves that it was just a little mistake and that he/she actually did understand the lesson. If you give a student partial credit for something on one test and then on the next test they miss it again but only miss a few things in the equation you should take off a little more credit since it is their second time missing the same type of equation. If they miss it again on the third test they should start getting 0 partial credit because they have had plenty of time by then to understand what to do during
This idea is absurd! Our educational grading system is a scale of A, B, C, D, F with mastery being an A, average being an C, and complete failing being an F. What we would be saying to our students under his point is no matter how hard you work and how much effort you give something, if you can’t be perfect you are no better than a failure. How many students would there then be that feel like why even try? This would lead to more drop outs which is another alarming issue.

I do not deny that partial credit can be harmful for those who choose the easy way out, but many excellent and dedicated students should be offered the opportunity of extra points that may have been lost on a single test or homework assignment. These students get good grades on their tests, so the partial credit can be seen as a small reward. For example, I think that an F on an assignment or quiz deserves zero points instead of the percentage that they received, because this student showed a lack of understanding of the material. This goes without saying that these students would not graduate unless they put in the needed time and effort into learning the material required to obtain the grades for the professions they desire. The example of the engineer miscalculating the weight capacity of the tower in the Olympic Stadium is misleading because it could not have been the fault of one engineer on the project, but many who worked on it. In addition, a student who got by with partial credit and never had the ambition to do better, would not have been head of such an extensive and important building
Accountability, we all need to be accountable for something in our lives whether it is our education, our job, or in our personal lives, but should an 8-year-old third grader have to be accountable for plotting leaf lengths in fraction form on a number line in order to move on to fourth grade? Should sixth graders be accountable for knowing the climate in Moscow or the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 in order to advance to seventh grade? It might not be because they don’t understand it, the student may not know it but they are just not a good test taker, they had a bad day, panicked in the test, the test was not the right level or something happened at home. The New York Times says “It is entirely possible for students to fail tests on such topics and still have, the mathematical abilities or historical knowledge we want.” If the child still has the abilities then why should you take that one test so seriously that their grade goes down? It could have been just because they were nervous at the time. According to education researcher Gregory J. Cizek, anecdotes abound "illustrating how testing... produces gripping anxiety in even the brightest students, and makes young children vomit or cry, or both." This happens so much in Sacramento Bee that teachers are trained to clean vomit off of a test.
Educators should never be held completely accountable for student scores on standardized tests. Though these tests were made to evaluate a students rough estimation of skill, they were not made to evaluate their entire education. Teachers should not be completely held accountable for test scores either. These scores hold too much power over schools and educators. Failure on a standardized test should mean “improvement needed”, not “you should just give up!”. These tests create anxiety caused by the consequences surrounding them. Giving American students a well-balanced education should be the school systems main goal in order to ensure America’s future economic success. Standardized tests are okay to use as rough estimates, but not for a total evaluation of any person’s ability.
If the students doesn’t pass it the the first time then they have two more opportunities and if they don’t pass it the third time then they are gonna have a conference with everyone. But I don’t think holding them back for one test is not fair because if they pass the class all year then they should be able to move on anyway.
No one enjoys taking tests, but they help us to recall what we have or have not learned, and they help us to see where we need more practice. If a student does poorly, should they be allowed a retest? Do retests allow kids to push the test off, and not prepare adequately? Do retest offer any benefits? Does allowing retests put students behind in college readiness? Teachers must be able to prepare each and every student well enough so that they can take the test and remember what has been taught with ease. Students also must be willing to put in the required work, and must be responsible enough to prepare ahead of time. If teachers and administrators allow students to retake these assessments, then we are devaluing the students grade, because there has been a lack of effort introduced to the equation.
Teachers have always used grades to measure the amount a student has learned. This practice is becoming ineffective. Many students have a wide range of grades, which show that grades may not show what a student really knows. Therefore, the standard grading system should be replaced. Some reasons why grades should be replaced are bad grades can hinder a child’s performance, grades define who a student is in the classroom, and grades are not an effective way to see if students have learned the material. The current grading system should be upgraded and every school should incorporate the plus/minus system in their method of grading.

Furthermore, crime charges have occurred in several states due to trying to break in and receive test booklets and answer keys to prepare for a standardized test. There is a point when testing becomes too much for one to bare and it causes outrageous actions by others. Additionally, many test administrators have also been found guilty of allowing students to cheat, or even giving them some answers to the test. This is another direct result of so much pressure being built up for a single test (Layton). Without some changes to this system the crimes will only get worse. Cheating on a test isn’t beneficial for anyone involved and only creates more problems in the long run.
By holding all students accountable with the same standards, they will eventually be better students. Sometimes, life is too easy because someone makes it too easy. Some teachers will give out A’s like candy, and others are stingy when it comes to passing
Now, I know that my grade in this class could probably use some improvement and I am going to try my hardest to get my grade up. So the first thing that is going to happen is making sure that any work that I get from now on is turned in on time. By turning in the work on time I ensure that my grade will not be lowered because I turned in an assignment in late and got points taken away. Now say I missed a couple of days of school I can always ask the teacher for the work that I missed and do it at home, which if turned in will replace the zeros that were there previously. Something else that I can try is asking the teacher for help, teachers usually know what they teach so, by asking them for help it could help me increase my chances at score higher on any and all future assignments. Extra credit is another thing that I can do to increase my grade by a couple of points. Even though teachers only do this from time to time it is a great way to get a few extra points those points could easily improve my grade from a “C” to a “B”. It is not that hard to do especially when you put your mind to it, anything becomes possible.

Assessing student understanding is important but as a teacher you need to provide feedbacks to the students. During my lesson, I allowed the student to ask questions and tried to answer each individual’s answer right away. Since my students are not able to read or write I had to provide feedbacks by verbally.
