National Standards in Arts Education
The study of the arts for all ages is a vital component of the education system. Art forms such as dance, music, visual arts, and more act as a gateway into further understanding of one’s self, and the world around them. Therefore, providing students with knowledge of these forms allows for further human development and teaches them skills for the future.
There are multiple boards/branches that ensure children are exposed to the arts within the schooling system. These branches include the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS), the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), National Association for Music Education (NAFME)as well as others. These two topics act as a base for the arts standards and underneath them are the five disciplines. The first discipline is “Arts as Communication.” This discipline states that the arts play a large role in the world today, more specifically in the media, and that through their understanding, we can enhance communication as well as interpretation of ideas and others. The second discipline recognizes that the arts have a substantial impact on the individual level and encourages students to both create and perform; this is called “Arts as Creative Personal Realization.” The following discipline, “Arts as Culture, History, and Connectors,” focuses on using art to explore other cultures and origins. The goal of this discipline is the comprehension and appreciation of the vast variety of art forms. This discipline not only expands knowledge, but works to bring people/ideas together by appreciating their differences. “Arts as Means to Wellbeing” is also a very important discipline that, through art education, “enhances mental, physical and emotional wellbeing” (“Conceptual Framework”). The final discipline is called “Arts as Community Engagement.” This discipline fosters partner and group work among students as a way to experience artistic engagement and community bonding. As seen above, they clearly outline what information needs to be taught, how it should be covered, and how it can be applied/useful in future life situations. Because of this, it is important to recognize that these standards are “living documents.” This means that they are constantly adapting to meet the needs of students as well as changing to align with the ever-evolving society that we live in. There are multiple instances in which we would see a change in the national standards for arts education. For example, standards will be raised as the level of student achievement increases; expectations will become heightened as incentive for students to work even harder and continue their success. Edmund Burke Feldman was an Alumni Foundation Distinguished University Professor of Art at the University of Georgia. He was an art educator as well as an art historian. He has written several books about art including The Philosophy of Art Education, First Edition, 1995. The primary focus of this paper is to inform and show what Doctor Feldman thought was important to art teachers by correlating the practices of teaching art to the issues of philosophy Doctor Feldman wanted to bring together both subjects of art education and art teaching. He outlined the principle issues of art education and provided art teachers with a way of creating goals for teaching art.
It may seem impossible to include art in an academic setting, but it is possible, effective, and fun. According to Barry Oreck, it has been proven that students learning molecular bonding through dance have a more proficient understanding of the concept. He states, “We have found that if you learn something through a theater game, you can still answer a test question” (New Horizons Dickerson 3). This statement proves that the arts are extremely important and beneficial. With fine arts, students have a safe environment to express themselves, a motivation to stay in school, and higher test scores.
In today’s society anything can be considered “Art”. From the great sounds of a symphony, to the architecture of a modern structure, or even an elephant painting with its trunk, art is what the viewer perceives it to be. Individuals will always agree or disagree with the message behind a certain piece of art, as pieces can be offensive to some, but beautiful to others. Some argue that funding the arts in school is a waste of money, time, or a combination of both, but the benefits outweigh the negatives by far, due to a variety of reasons.

Integrating the arts across the curriculum is an innovative, yet effective educational process by which students learn through the arts. The program's intent is not to necessarily teach the arts, but to use them within the regular curricula. The activities use art as the catalyst to make learning meaningful and motivating. Students learn best when they are actively learning. The arts provide opportunities in which students are actively involved in learning. Students are more likely to retain knowledge and information when they are involved in the learning process. Utilizing the arts in the regular curriculum increases knowledge of a general subject area while fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of the fine arts.
Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
Now this leads us to understand what exactly, is art. studies all the typical “arts”. This includes music, literature, theatre, dance, film, as well as painting, sculpture, and architecture. This directs the student towards a very broad field. For example, architecture may involve the Sistine Chapel, considered one of the world’s most loved works of art. However, it may also include the landscaping in a small town square. So then, art is defined as something that deals with both the “useful” and “fine” arts, insofar as they appeal to aesthetic taste, or as long as they are created with the specific intent to cause a reaction, whether it be positive or negative.

Art Education is not always valued in school settings. Although some may see it as an unnecessary use of school funding, there are many who believe it is beneficial to students in more ways than one. There are many different studies that have been conducted to test the effects that art education has on school-aged children. Some studies have proven that art education can help students to improve in other academic areas. In a journal article from Ohio State University’s “Theory in Practice,” Karen A Hamblen states, “There are linkages between art learning and learning in other subjects areas and that art study can promote creative behaviors, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement.” It has also been found that the arts can teach children better self-regulatory strategies, and even foster more confidence and self-efficacy in school which relates to confidence in academics. Overall, art education in schools has been very beneficial and has proven to ignite creativity, confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic achievement in students.
