Philosophers such as Aristotle have described the importance of virtue within human life and how it affects not only people’s morality but their quality of life and success within society. Within the field of engineering there are many virtues needed for professionals to be successful. For mechanical engineers, the needed virtues come in forms of both character and thought and distinguish excellent engineers above others. Aristotle’s formulation of virtue ethics is closely tied to his definition of the terms eudaimonia and arête. Simply put, these terms mean happiness and virtue respectively. The intellectual virtues needed for a mechanical engineer’s success include, intellectual diversity, creativity, and mechanical intuition. While some engineering disciplines are able to function successfully by staying within their specialized realm of thought, this is not the case for mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers are constantly working with issues outside of their specific discipline, as they must consider things like how mechanical properties effect electronic readings and controls and vice versa, and what chemicals are involved in certain processes and what materials they come into contact with. For reasons such as these, intellectual diversity is of great importance to mechanical engineers. Creativity is a much-needed virtue in the roles of modern mechanical engineers due to the longevity of the profession. Mechanical engineering is arguably the first discipline of engineering to gain importance in human society and as such there a few simple mechanical engineering problems that need to be solved. In order for a mechanical engineer to successfully address the technical problems of today, or to improve upon current technology, a great deal of creativity is needed so that new and innovative ideas can be formed. Lastly, and possibly most importantly, mechanical intuition is needed for a mechanical engineer to flourish. While an education in mechanical engineering may provide the skills needed to address mechanical problems, to do so in a particularly successful manner requires a certain degree of innate understanding of how things interact physically. In Aristotle 's Nicomachean Ethics, the basic idea of virtue ethics is established. The most important points are that every action and decision that humans make is aimed at achieving the good or as Aristotle 's writes, “Every art and every inquiry, and similarly every action and choice, is thought to aim at the good... (Aristotle 1094a). Aristotle further explains that this good aimed for is happiness.
Aristotle’s virtue ethics is based on eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is the ultimate end which means that your life is flourishing and you’re doing well in life. Eudaimonia is self-sufficient and gives one the ability to make life choices and have a lack for nothing.
In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics the topic of eudaimonia comes up in various different ways. This paper will focus on what it means to say that virtue is necessary but not a sufficient condition for eudaimonia. This paper will attempt to show that the claim that virtue is necessary but insufficient for eudaimonia. For something to be necessary but insufficient for another thing means that it must be present in order to achieve the other thing, but its presence doesn 't guarantee that other thing.
Its primary aim is to praise and blame and it deals with excellence, goodness, shame, nobility, honor and matters of vice and virtue. According to Aristotle, virtue comprises courage, justice, magnificence, liberality, self-control, magnanimity, gentleness and wisdom that is speculative.
Aristotle develops his virtue ethics by first considering ends and goods. He claims that “every action and decision, seems to seek some good” (Shafer-Landau 2013, 615). Aristotle states that we pursue certain things because of the benefits it brings itself and other consequences it may bring. Aristotle suggests that this is the same for goodness. We must pursue what is good for good itself and for any other benefits it may bring. Furthermore, Aristotle suggests that through pursuing the good, we are able to determine the best way of life (Shafer-Landau 2013, 615).
In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics we are given the Greek term Eudaimonia, its definition being a contented sate of being happy, healthy and prosperous. For Aristotle, Eudaimonia or happiness is our ultimate goal. Aristotle states that most people see happiness as something physical and this way of thinking is faulted because we do not have the appropriate image of a good life. He goes on to tell us that our view is faulted because most people are not virtuous. The reason for the deficiency in virtue found in society is that people are not thought virtue correctly from a young age. Aristotle believes that people can only reach their ultimate goal of happiness by living a virtuous life and making the right decisions. The quote given to us states

Plato and Aristotle both believed that a good person choose morally sound choices because of their reason and good character. A person who follows their good character and reason instead of trying to avoid consequences is a virtuous person. Aristotle believed “virtue is a matter of developing the unique ability to reason.”(Pacquette 268) Being virtuous to Plato and Aristotle also meant, “doing things- no matter what these things were- in a way that reflected rational thought and involved making the best of one’s skills, talents and opportunities.” (Pacquette 268) Aristotle and Plato both agreed that a person’s good moral character and reason guided their ethical choices. A good moral life to them would lead to “eudaimonia, an ancient Greek word that translates into English as happiness.” (Pacquette 268) Though Plato talked and wrote about virtue and happiness, Aristotle went into great detail about his ideas. Aristotle is known as the creator of the theory of virtue ethics. “Aristotle held that there are three forms of happiness. The first form of happiness is a life of pleasure and enjoyment. The second form of happiness is a life as a free and responsible citizen. The third form of happiness is a life as a thinker and philosopher.”(Gaarder 115) Aristotle felt that for a person to achieve eudaimonia, they must achieve all three forms of happiness otherwise they will not be truly happy and satisfied because their life would be unbalanced.
