My Path
It has taken a very long time for me to decide on the path that I wanted to take for my career. I have almost always known that I wanted to be an engineer. I was always more interested in applying my knowledge to solve problems rather than just research and understand the world. However, I had little to no inkling as to which field of engineering I wanted to go in to. I had always been a dabbler, involving myself in a large variety of activities with the interest of learning about how stuff works. I started out learning how to use the tools in the shed outback, making pinewood derby cars and model rockets. I would help my dad with home improvement and repair projects around the house. But I did have an interest in materials. However, mechanical engineering is a very broad field. Mechanical engineering has an area of specialization referred to as “Materials and Manufacturing” [4] It doesn’t focus so heavily on material development and design so much as material selection and the methods of manufacturing parts using those materials. For example, “How do you mass produce carbon fiber parts?” would be a problem that a mechanical engineer of this specialization might set out to solve. At this point I had also had some exposure to electrical engineering, through a Snap Electronics kit and obtaining my Amateur Radio License. Mechanical engineers do take some electrical engineering classes. For most of their engineering job listings where mechanical engineering degrees apply, they require anywhere from three to seven years of experience in positions which are very like the one that can be applied for [6]. Tesla desires that their engineers have some experience with a variety of software/programs, and a familiarity with computer programming [6]. While I know, I will learn how to use some of the needed software while getting my degree at Iowa State, I will probably not get all the necessary experience that Tesla wants. However, there may be entry level jobs that I missed in the catalog that might require less experience. Depending on the internships/co-ops that I get, it may be possible for me to fill a lower level position at Tesla once I get my degree. However, to go that route, I will need to take classes on control systems, design optimization, statistics, sustainability, and alternative energy systems. Everyone at one point has to make a decision on what they want to be when they grow up. For me, that decision came rather unexpectedly and was a result of a new found interest due to self-discovery. It all began when I was around the age of 8 and I watched a documentary on aircraft. It documented all about planes, how they work and the science behind them. I was immediately captivated and gaining all that information as a young child really hit the spot in terms of a new found passion and interest that I could see myself later using. This passion stuck with me ever since as I have spent tons of spare time studying different types of aircraft and collecting model planes. It ultimately helped me with my answer to the question of what I wanted to be when I grew up as being an aeronautical engineer. It is not a career most would pursue, but it shows how self-discovery impacted me at a very young age and the impact is so log lasting that it has influenced most of the decision I make now in terms of courses I take at school and the extracurricular activities I am a part of. Full disclosure: I've lived my entire life wanting to be an engineer. My father is a manufacturing engineer. My grandfather was an electrical engineer. My girlfriend is currently studying at Iowa State in mechanical Engineering. I am an engineer at heart.
For the longest time I could not decide on a major and a career to study throughout college. When I came to Georgia Southern University I discovered that they had a major that was very interesting to me. Sport Management id the ideal major for my interest and me. Since I love sports I figured that this would be the career for me. A degree in Sport Management helps to prepare for success in sport related occupations.
The knowledge acquired in schools and colleges, I believe is not an education, but the means to it. It is this belief that made me a student to the end of my days, the obvious direction being curiosity to wards exploration.
Engineering has been a key interest of mine since childhood. While still in grade school I enjoyed listening to my father, an electrical engineer, teach me about advances in technology, and was always eager to hear more. I was introduced to my first computer at the age of five, and have loved interacting with them ever since. My decision to study engineering as a career was no surprise to those who knew me.
I have spent so much time learning about design through the paradigm of materials but now I want to connect mechanical aspects to the knowledge I have already gained. I am particularly interested in the research done by Dr. Drew Nelson, Dr. Sheri Sheppard and Dr. Friedrich Prinz whose work most closely fits my interests. I am interested in doing research in mechanical design as influenced by material usage. I am also looking forward to taking courses such as Imperfections in Crystalline Solids, The Magic of Materials and Manufacturing, and Nanomaterials Synthesis and Applications for Mechanical Engineers to explore topics I have already studied, but from a mechanical engineering perspective. Stanford’s combination of rigor and creativity appeal to me. I have always enjoyed a challenge and get great satisfaction from expanding my knowledge. Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. People starting in the career usually have a Bachelors degree, no work experience, and no on the job training. About 59 percent of workers in this field have a bachelors degree. The percent of worker in the field who have something higher than a bachelors degree is about 28 percent. The remaining 13 percent have something below a bachelors degree such as an associates, a high school diploma. The percent of chemical engineers that a have something less than a diploma is 0 percent. When wanting to pursue a career as a chemical engineer its best to have some sort of education, knowing you got your education from somewhere will let companies know that you at least know
When I look at how mankind has evolved over years, it amazes me. My career goal is to become a mechanical engineer. People travel miles in search of their true passion; some find them early in their life and I consider myself lucky enough to be one among them. I found my true calling at the age of 12 on a field trip to a milk factory. It seemed like the Disneyland of science with huge machineries, conveyer belts running all around, and instruments working about in their own rhythm with sheer intricacies and perfection. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been dreamed of being a teacher. I wanted to decorate my own classroom, grade my students paper, and proudly display their colorful works of art on my walls. According to dictionary.com,” Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering dealing with the design, construction, and use of machines.” Their job is to take an idea and actually make it happen. Doing this takes a lot of knowledge and skills. They first start off with an idea that they have. Then they try to make a small module of it. They do this so they know what the product will work without spending a lot of money on it. They have to find the right materials to do this. The materials have to be able to withstand a lot of things nature has to throw at it. Like rain, dust, lightening, and many more things. After they have to make sure the produce is safe. When all of this is done they build the real thing.
Everyone wants to be something from a doctor to a stylist, I want to be a mechanical engineer. This is something I have always wanted to do in my life, the opportunities that exist in this field can lead to anything. Mechanical engineers are able to do many tasks in the job environment from designing, to developing, and also building. I know I will probably need to take advanced math and science classes. I am a more hands on type of person and it easier for me to understand. I like fixing things and working with my hands. This career interests me because when I was younger, I used to always try and fix things. Sometimes, my dad would start to fix his car and I would go out and try to help him because it was fun learning how the car worked and how he would fix it. The skills that I am already good at are math and science, which, are highly required when trying to become and engineer.
