Losing a job is always a difficult and painful experience for any individual. It is even more difficult and heart wrenching based on the years of service with the organization, how you lost your job and the responsibilities that are hinged on your employment (family, mortgage etc.). However, as a company, it is important to let employees know that losing their job is not the end of the world. As Bob Marley said “when one door is closed another door is open”. This should be the mindset that management must try to instill in employees as they take on the challenge of a new chapter in their life.

Effective problem solving skills helps individuals to identify, analyze and access the alternative solutions to the problem. It would also help the teams to work more efficiently with co-workers, customers and management. Trained individuals will be provided with the skills to be able to solve problems more constructively, thus becoming a more valuable team player to the organization. This would stimulate employees to work more efficiently with co-workers, customers, partners and vendors in whatever job they find themselves in. Employees would also learn to use resources within the organization to resolve issues in a constructive manner, with the mindset that the company comes first at all times.

Layoffs are one means by which an organization can reduce expenses with the intent of improving its bottom line. Despite being typically performed as a last resort, layoffs often have a negative impact on the remaining workforce. As a manager, there are numerous areas for concern in managing the workforce going forward. The human costs related to downsizing are “immense and far-reaching” with one of the most profound being survivor syndrome according to Hanson (2015, p. 187). Also known as survivor’s guilt, this condition relates to the emotions felt by those still employed and some of the effects include decreased motivation, moral, and job satisfaction, as well as an increased proclivity to search for other employment. Prepare emails or memos for the remaining employees explaining the termination. Be honest and upfront about the reasons and consequences of terminations. If the termination is for absenteeism, then state that. If the company is experience financial problems, it is also a good idea to get that out in the open to avoid gossip and fear mongering. Implement a transition of responsibilities and assign duties to other associates.
