Communications play an important role in our society and with todays emphasizes on community_ oriented policing (Police Chief Magazines, 2009) communication and social skills became an important part in dealing with public and media. In many cases law enforcement officers faces problems and challenges that could be easily solve through effective communication. Not surprisingly, the officers who were in the force for a longer time knew that an effective communication is the best way to control a person without using any force. According to (Police Chief Magazine, 2009), the IMPACT model of interpersonal communication is built around six principles that can be applied to many law enforcement circumstances. However, I think three of these six principles have a higher importance in law enforcement. The first step in this model is to identify and manage the emotions. In the law enforcement work, it is crucial to handle the emotions and tensions that emerge from the situation and keep the logical reasoning all the time. This first skill can be crucial in situations where an officer needs to reduce tensions in order to reason with people who are in conflict. Acknowledgment is one of the basic ways that can aid us. Listening to other people concerns and feelings will build a constructive feeling toward in a conflict. Listening can establish a positive relationship among the people in the conflict. It is important when acknowledging give people the impression that you not only understand their words but also their emotions. Asking questions and paraphrasing are other techniques that can be used to inform the person that you actually care about his concerns. In addition, there is a need for ongoing communication training for officers even after they entered the force because like firearm training if they don’t receive the necessary training and practice the skill will diminish. It is important to remember that interpersonal communication skills not only help law enforcement officer in difficult situations and conflicts but also provide them with effective ways to communicate with their peers through out the police agencies. As a result of these effective communications the officers can have a better flow of information, resulting in increased productivity.
In Conclusion, there is undeniable link between effective interpersonal communication skill and decision-making. It is always important to remember that many conflicts ad situation can be solve with an effective communication.
One of the skills that helps me towards my professional development, is the necessary skill of effective communication. I’ve spent majority of my time at community boards conversing with people and my co-workers. Whether I was explaining the process to a client or troubleshooting a client’s issue with Cordell or Mac, every conversation I had, has helped me become a better communicator. Thus helping my professional objective of working in Law Enforcement, which I feel, requires the ability to effectively and concisely communicate with others. When I do achieve my professional goal of being in Law Enforcement, I can tap into Community Board’s resources, for they work with various groups in San Francisco, such as with the District Attorney’s office or the local law enforcement officers. If I were to become an officer for the San Francisco Police Department, I would be able to call Cordell or Mac and discuss the best way I could deal with a potential conflict encounter. For instance, if I were to be at a school and some kids were having issues, I could relay that conflict to Community Boards and their pool of mediators in order to deal with the kids. Another possibility and has happened throughout my summer at Community boards, is that if I were to be the police officer and cannot help the person at all or they need a service that I can’t provide, I can refer them to Community Boards and they are able to help them directly or refer them to the correct agency that can. I’ve already taken the next step in my career development, for now I’m working at the Daly City Police Department as an intern and getting my foot in the door that may lead me into many different paths throughout the Criminal Justice system. I don’t know where I would be without my best friend. The person who keeps me sane when my family is driving me crazy, or the person who will stay up with me all night to support me when I have a last minute paper due in a class; I don’t know where I would be without that support. I found this support in my best friend, my sister from another father, Regina. Regina is an eccentric, overbearing, lover of all things natural type of girl. Data about their attitudes and behaviors were collected before and after the training to analyze if and how the training affected them. This training had a positive effect on the officers that participated so much that six months later, these behavioral improvements were still present.
