One of the skills that helps me towards my professional development, is the necessary skill of effective communication. I’ve spent majority of my time at community boards conversing with people and my co-workers. Whether I was explaining the process to a client or troubleshooting a client’s issue with Cordell or Mac, every conversation I had, has helped me become a better communicator. Thus helping my professional objective of working in Law Enforcement, which I feel, requires the ability to effectively and concisely communicate with others. When I do achieve my professional goal of being in Law Enforcement, I can tap into Community Board’s resources, for they work with various groups in San Francisco, such as with the District Attorney’s office or the local law enforcement officers. If I were to become an officer for the San Francisco Police Department, I would be able to call Cordell or Mac and discuss the best way I could deal with a potential conflict encounter. For instance, if I were to be at a school and some kids were having issues, I could relay that conflict to Community Boards and their pool of mediators in order to deal with the kids. Another possibility and has happened throughout my summer at Community boards, is that if I were to be the police officer and cannot help the person at all or they need a service that I can’t provide, I can refer them to Community Boards and they are able to help them directly or refer them to the correct agency that can. I’ve already taken the next step in my career development, for now I’m working at the Daly City Police Department as an intern and getting my foot in the door that may lead me into many different paths throughout the Criminal Justice system. Furthermore, after assisting multiple officers from his unit in a potential trespass violation at a local school, instead of driving going about their separate ways the officers began swapping arrest stories and offering their opinions on the progression of the resulting criminal cases. Ever since I was little, my parents have taught me to be an honest and respectful person. I noticed that two of the core values for the San Diego Police Department is diversity and valuing people. One of the great aspects of living in California is you get to experience a great diversity of individuals. Through my life I’ve been able to carry these traits when dealing with other people such as friends, co-workers, customers, and even strangers. These experiences have provided me with a great appreciation for others’ differences. I’ve worked in a team with others from varying backgrounds and different projects. Each person has their own strength to contribute. Law enforcement is a public service position. It requires a person to deal with diverse co-workers as well as working with a diverse community. It is important be respectful at all times on and off the job. I’ve attended schools in multiple counties, participated in organizations such as Boy Scouts and after school sports, and worked in different fields dealing with a wide variety of people.
On February 1, 2017 I interviewed Sergeant Jason Pace from Troop D of the Missouri Highway Patrol. Admittedly, this interview was somewhat nerve wracking because of the potential line of questioning. 2016 saw some truly horrific crimes, some involving police brutality and others involving brutality to police officers and this is why the interview was met with such apprehension. As the interview went on I began to feel more confident in my questions and his truly professional answers.

Communication plays a role in Soldier development, peer to peer relations, Chain of command management, and virtually every aspect of a military operations. Commanders require it the most so that they can execute large scale operations without flaw and that alone requires ceaseless effective communication. In its true definition communication competence entitles a speaker to have a strong knowledge base of how to effectively communicate with others in a non confusing way. Full blown communication competence implies that speakers have knowledge of grammatical rules of a particular language as well as additional knowledge of appropriate social context uses.
