The Importance of Using Communication Skills as a Corrections Officer

As a Correction Officer, their job consists of communicating with the inmates and the employee’s. The correction officers will instruct the inmates about how to act, what to wear, how to talk and etc. The Correction Officers are required to inform the inmates of the rules and regulations of the facility, they will have to do an attendance check to make sure that none of the inmates have went missing, or the Correction Officer may have to explain to the inmates the things that will possibly be occurring while they are in court and what will be expected of them while they’re attending court and they may develop a social relationship with some of the inmates by communicating with them often. In order to appropriately interact with the inmates and socialize with your employees, you will need to use verbal communication skills. Good communication is an important skill to have when working as a Juvenile Correction Officer, because learning how to effectively communicate will help solve problems involving inmates, it will also help you present reports concerning the inmates to the judges, attorneys, or the inmates probation officers and will allow the C.O. to work with the troubled teens and find ways that will better their attitudes and get them on the correct path in life.

You should start by building a social relationship with your inmates, be kind to the inmates, speak to them, get to know their names and have conversations with the inmates. By building a social relationship with the inmates that you will be watching over, you can start addressing each of the inmates by their names and socializing with them about how their day have been going ...
