I am a firm believer that learning should not happen exclusively in the classroom. The opportunity to get out into the field and learn, on the ground, is an important part of a holistic education.
In today’s global society, the option to travel abroad, to obtain real world educational experiences, only further enhances a student’s education, and makes the student more competitive/marketable in our globally minded world.
I am interested in this program to not only deeply enhance my graduate school experience, but to have the chance to immerse myself in the people and culture of China, and learn first hand from them, bringing to life material learned in the classroom. I am certain that this experience will expand my knowledge of global policy, thus increasing my knowledge base as an academic, and making me more marketable in the post-doctorate employment search. I hope to gain a new appreciation for the global studies and sociology; as well as gain a new experience that I can apply to my future education and work in the field. I also have very limited financial resources, and could not study abroad without financial assistance. As you can see from my 1st semester PhD GPA of 4.08, and my master’s degree GPA of 4.0, I have high levels of motivation and commitment to my field; I will take full advantage if afforded the opportunity to participate in the China study abroad program, and sincerely believe I will return not only a stronger academic, but a better person as well. I hope to use what I have learned to effect change locally. I would also look forward to being a mentor to students who could benefit from similar study abroad experiences.

Before reading the various articles on the debate, I had little previous knowledge on the differences between enrolling in a satellite campus and studying abroad. As college approaches, I’ve decided that I am interested in studying abroad at some point and I am now persuaded that it would be a better option than attending a satellite school through a university. Berdan, the author of “Raising Global Children” and “A Student Guide to Study Abroad,” really opened my eyes that the better option for a different learning experience and self growth would be studying abroad. I knew certain universities had campuses in other countries; however, I was not aware that U.S. professors typically taught the courses.
With the development of economy of China, the tendency for students to study abroad increases every year. According to a report of the Institute of International Education, there are 229,300 Chinese students who chose to study abroad in 2010. That data means people who went to study abroad exceed 30 percentages than the previous year. (Lin 1) A statistics showed Chinese spent 10 billion CNY, which equals about 1.5 billion dollars on study abroad every year. What makes people curious is that students who study as high school students or undergraduate students occupied a huge part. This phenomenon is totally different from ten years ago. Before that time, most of students who study abroad pursued graduate degree, PHD or higher degree. Few students had high school or college overseas. These years, the trend toward younger age of study abroad is more and more popular. Especially in Beijing and Shanghai, parents want their children to study abroad as young as possible. The competitive environment in China, the economic conditions of people, the new thoughts of parents, and the more convenient information are the main causes of the lowering ages of Chinese students who study abroad.
Field education is an essential to my social work education. It will help me to gain a better understanding of social work and the general outline of day-to-day work that social workers engage in. Even though there might only be a lot of observing it is still seeing first-hand what social workers do. It is helpful to finally see everything that I have been learning actually happening in real life. For example, I have already run into a situation similar to having sex with a client, except it was a professor and student. In this particular situation the professor impregnated the student, which led to Lutheran Family Services stepping in and placing their child for adoption at age 2.5. Engaging in field education verifies that the content discussed in class happens in the real world. The role that I expect field to play in my social work education is simply to provide me with a better understanding of the social work profession in everyday life.
Finding a course to fulfill my global pathway requirement was relatively simple for me to do because I had a clear purpose of what I want to do. I chose to take Mandarin classes to fulfill my global pathway requirement because I live in Manhattan and it will be very convenient for me to be able to speak an intermediate level of Mandarin in the city that never sleeps. As a result, I will have less of a hard time when I travel to Chinatown in the future. Furthermore, although I am a citizen of the United States, it is an irrevocable fact that I am still Chinese. I have spent most of my lifetime in the United States and my skill of speaking Mandarin has gradually been fading as time keeps passing. Standing out of the crowd is a great way to get attention for a good job or acceptance into a university. Taking a gap year to study abroad can open many doors and help teens become better equipped to identify and interact with people from other cultures. “With so many international experiences available, more than 80% of gap year students say their experiences make them more globally aware” (Salisbury). In an expanding business world, increased cultural awareness and even language skills will help future teens of the workforce be more successful in their careers.
Moreover, the academic program will give me a platform where I can make substantial contribution to in-class discourse. Dandelion Project, a registered Hong Kong charity, was founded in early 2013 by a group of local students from different universities, who pay the common attention to education in rural areas of China. It was at CHS where I realized that day by day I saw the smiles on the kids faces grow, since their anger and frustration with hearing-abled people’s lack of understanding diminished. Despite their hearing disability causing their speech impediments, they felt happy and connected to the world; they learned how to better put their thoughts and expressions into words that people understood. Just being able to witness that in itself is amazing, but I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to contribute to their improvements. It was at CHS my own selfishness and greed disappeared. I noticed the happiness and positivity I brought everyday I volunteered, rubbed off on the kids and even the teachers.
Since my collage school days, I have developed strong interests for the issues regarding international relations, particularly for lobbying and diplomatic relations. During my study in collage, I am active in several conferences which discus about International issue, as I advocate the opinion that to be good students of majoring international relations, should practice like real diplomat such as lobbying and join in model united nations.
