Finding a course to fulfill my global pathway requirement was relatively simple for me to do because I had a clear purpose of what I want to do. I chose to take Mandarin classes to fulfill my global pathway requirement because I live in Manhattan and it will be very convenient for me to be able to speak an intermediate level of Mandarin in the city that never sleeps. As a result, I will have less of a hard time when I travel to Chinatown in the future. Furthermore, although I am a citizen of the United States, it is an irrevocable fact that I am still Chinese. I have spent most of my lifetime in the United States and my skill of speaking Mandarin has gradually been fading as time keeps passing. It was the worst unforgettable memories of my life in this country as being a victim of school bullies because I was the easiest target being the only Chinese student at that school who couldn't speak English. I had no help from school facilities, I didn't tell my parents about what was happening in school because they only need to know the positive things. I took the negative burdens, like always, upon myself. Slowly, I began to realize that I would never be able to move forward if I didn't overcome my fear. For that reason, I got up on my feet and began facing the school bullies for the first time. In return, I won my battle. As a result of that, I gained my reputation among the temporary students, no one picked on me since then, my life turned colorful, and I got tremendous confidence when I spoke English. That was when my life carried me into the next chapter. I got friends, high self-esteem, and other positive things. My mom would always say, “American born Chinese students have it easy in America.” One key difference between the American education system and Chinese education system is the way they are taught. Being raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I went to school to understand the idea of analyzing and understanding concepts. After reading Only Hope, I realized that their education is based on more memorizations. To Chinese students, understand the concept and apply it is not the most important, you must just memorize it for the exam. Many parents in China would say that going on vacation and relaxing is a waste of time because they need to focus on learning. In Greenspan’s article, it mentions that a student in China is the top of her class and is fluent in English, yet she cannot go on vacation because her mother wants her to spend time learning, many students in China
Whoever may been a victim of bullying or are the bullies was once a kid and they believed in something with all their heart, maybe it was that they didn’t like how smart you are, your clothes, or how you talk. It’s how they feel towards you to make them not like you. And they use to have friends, friends they can hang out with, talk to and just be these themselves with, but when they started being bullied for being different they’re friends not hanging out with, talking to them and don’t want to be friends with them because they’re afraid to get bullied just like just like that person. Similarly, Wong also grew up in America with a traditional Chinese mother. In contrast, Wong’s upbringing involves her mother forcing her into attending two different schools. After her American school day, Wong continues on with Chinese school to learn both cultures. Her mother felt it was her duty to “[. . .] learn the language of [her] heritage” (Wong 144). My tenure in student government groomed me into an adept problem solver, negotiator, and critical thinker, always willing to help others. Young children everywhere have been affected negatively by different forms of bullying. It’s not just the person who is the one getting bullied who is being affected badly it is the bully as well. That is the purpose of why the best way to battle this fight is to continue on pursuing dreams and goals without letting others negativity affect future plans. There have been studies on why people have the urge to hurt others emotional. Also, more than a few articles on bullies are about their mental health and how it plays a major role in it. Conclusion: The findings suggest empathy and understanding of how youth see things from others’ point-of-view may be an important factor in bullying” (Dorothy). According to Dorothy, there are studies on viewing major topics from a student’s point of view to understand the issues and learn to fix the problem. The students had empathy for those being bullied. In the study, students understood clearly that bullying is more of a physiological action than physical. There are bullies out there that are having trouble at home and these troubles are what make them angry enough to take it out on their classmates at school. And for this reason other students have empathy for bullies; they know there's a reason to why they have become a bully. Therefore, the best solution as Jessie J had written, “You talk that, Blah blah that la la, that rah rah sh, And I'm so done, I'm so over it” (Jessie J). In today’s society, we all need just a little push and that may come from parents, friends, or bullies. This push is necessary in order to mentally prepare children and teenagers alike for the world which is full of mean and disrespectful people. This world has no place for those who have a weak mind or cannot muster up the strength to assert their will. When I say that people need a push, I do not necessarily mean a positive one. When people think of bullying in a modern context they think of a group of children surrounding a single child throwing insult after insult while getting physically abused. I've had several upper division courses with teachers from China, I really struggled in these classes because there was that language barrier, so I can only imagine how the Chinese students feel coming here and trying to learn in a language they don't fully understand. We can take several different approaches to thinking about what we should in each of the following scenarios. Bullying has been around for decades and yet it is still a reoccurring problem, and it is only getting worse. The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. I was born in Taiwan where people are passionate and enthusiastic. I have grown up in a society where people respect and welcome different thoughts and beliefs. Until 2005 my family moved to Guangdong as my father’s job requirement. China has been developing rapidly over the past 20 years. I integrated into Chinese society pretty soon although both are quite different in many ways. I had made a lot of acquaintance with local students in the schools and had a wonderful study in high school to win the scholarships for three consecutive years. In 2011, I passed the high school entrance examination and got admitted to Dongguan Middle School which is the best one in Dongguan area.
“Researchers have conducted that at least 25% of all children will be affected by bullying at some point during their school years, and many of these children miss significant numbers of school days each year owing to fear of being bullied” (Bray, M., Kehle, T., Sassu, K. (2003). Bullying has become a major problem for our students and our schools. Children are missing educational time and are losing self-confidence because they are afraid or intimidated by other students. We, as teachers, need to reduce bullying in our schools and prevent bullying from being a reoccurring issue in the lives of our students in order for them to learn, grow and develop. Our goal as teachers should be “to reduce as much as possible-ideally to eliminate completely- existing bully/victim problems in and out of the school setting and to prevent the development of new problems” (Olweus, D. (1993).
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
