In today’s society, humans are constantly changing the world day after day to accommodate their needs or wants throughout their lives. Human geography, for example, is the study of languages, cultures, technological advancements, and also the interactions between humans and their environment. In fact, without human geography we would never be able to comprehend different cultures, experiences, or anything about ourselves. Thus, knowing what’s going on in your geography can help you understand the benefits/downsides to your environment and how your culture has an impact on your life.

For instance, when I think about my human geography, I think of it as the key idea to making my perspectives on life and others change drastically. For example, due to where I live I feel like I have benefited from my geography for a variety of reasons because I am able to witness my neighbors who have different cultures than I do, handle certain situations differently as I would expect my culture to handle it. For instance, the loss of a child or family member and how both cultures handle the burial arrangements differently. Also, my geography has allowed me to get closer/be able to understand the different cultures points of views more, as compared to if I lived someplace else because my neighborhood is filled with a variety of different cultures. However, although I have benefited from my geography, I also feel as if I have been hindered by my community because a vast majority of my coworkers have different religions/cultures which may require them to have selective days off for holidays, causing me to have to work more hours than I would want to. Another key idea that I consider when thinking about what makes my geography so special to me is if I am able to be mobile from where I live in Illinois. More importantly, I believe that it is important for people to know if they have one specific sense of place and if they are being treated equally within their environment. As for me, I am content with my geography because my sense of place is my house and because I feel like I am treated equally within my environment. Furthermore, not only has my house been a safe spot for me when I am feeling lost or vulnerable, but my house has brought me many good and bad memories that I will always treasure throughout my life. And for these reasons, I could not image myself living anyplace else because of what I have been through emotionally and mentally since I have lived there.
